  • Khalani's New Year Resolution list
    K Kosuzu

    1. Do not pull my owners arm off while walking.
    2. If I have to go to the toilet, tell my owner. Do not let him find my business somewhere in the house, he doesn't seem to like it.
    3. When my owner says "get your head out of the rubbish bin", do it immediately.
    4. My side of the bed is on the right side, not in the middle.
    5. Barking at nothing is NOT good.
    6. The insides of the cushions should stay on the inside.
    7. When I see a cupboard door or drawer open, it is NOT an invitation to stick my head in it.
    8. It is NOT ok to eat my dinner and then attempt to eat my brothers dinner.
    9. Reminder:- When my owner says "come" it is NOT time to run away and play 'catch me if you can'.
    10. My owners ear is NOT a chew toy.

    If he keeps just one of them I'll be a very happy owner!i

  • Anyone have trouble not being able to sleep if the dogs aren't in bed with you?
    K Kosuzu

    I am so used to having my Basenji Khalani and my Minpin Kosana in bed with me. Kosana curled up next to my stomach, Khalani curled up behind my knees. It's like a dog sandwich with me, the meat, in the middle. I am unable to move, I usually wake up sore and stiff because I can't turn over but I wouldn't have it any other way. In fact I can't sleep if they aren't there.
    Anyone else have this problem?

  • Mouthing problem with my boy Khalani
    K Kosuzu

    Khalani is only 18 months old, so I hope if I keep consistent he may grow out of it. I was hoping someone might suggest something I haven't thought of. I will try what kjdonkers suggested and find a toy he loves and substitute that when he decides to have a nibble.

    Only a Basenji would look upside down like that rather than turn their head sideways, it's hilarious. One thing that Basenjis do is make me laugh, they are silly but so serious doing it!

    Khalani does this as well

  • And now for the question we all ask ourselves…
    K Kosuzu

    Nice, mine does this too. Basenjis are very bendy.

    Although this picture looks nasty, I can assure you there was no malice. Khalani was simply "tasting" my Minpin Kosanas head
    In fact Kosana was laying there thinking "what the hell are you doing". Khalani just opened his mouth gently and placed it over Kosanas head, why is any bodies guess

  • Mouthing problem with my boy Khalani
    K Kosuzu

    Khalani has a habit of mouthing. He never bites hard but he does do it often. It's strange, but he never ever does it to people he meets in the street.
    I discipline him immediately when he does it by either putting him in his crate for a time out and/or I cover his muzzle and tell him NO but he continues to do it regardless.
    Does anyone have any suggestions that have worked for them?

  • Help to stop my B annoying my other dog

    @QuizBasenji:

    Hi Kosuzu
    Please make sure neither dog is wearing a collar…that's how I lost my baby girl...

    I sure will Quiz. Thanks

  • Help to stop my B annoying my other dog
    K Kosuzu

    Hi eeeefarm,
    My training consists of organised obedience training on a Sunday and home training 20mins per day. Including the usual sit, stay, come etc.
    It seems that I have been rewarding Khalani by reacting when he does play with Khalani, reinforcing his bad behaviour, It so hard not to when he does it on and off all day.
    I am putting him outside anytime he jumps on my minpin at the moment and I will stay doggedly consistent with that and see if that changes any behaviour. If I don't have any luck I will try the water spray you suggested.
    If anyone has any other suggestions I would really appreciate it.

    Koz

  • Help to stop my B annoying my other dog
    K Kosuzu

    Recently my boy Khalani has been incessantly playing with my older min pin, both he (minpin) and I are getting increasingly frustrated.
    There's no nastiness but the minpin is small and doesn't always appreciate it, as my B throws his weight behind his playing.
    I have tried crating my B for short periods when he fails to stop when I say so. I have left the room with my minpin for short periods. I even tied his lead to the furniture to give my min pin some brief periods of relief. Nothing seems to work! He has figured out that he gets into trouble if I see what he is, or is about to do, Khalani now only does it when he knows my back is turned.
    Can anyone suggest a training method I might try?

  • He just popped his head up!

    @Knipper:

    That's cute! Cricket does not subscribe to the slow stealthy approach. It's all about as much destruction as possible in the shortest amount of time while I'm indisposed. Everything is done in fast forward!

    Kalani waits until my back is turned and the second it is he gets into mischief. As soon as I look at him he freezes with the thought of either "if I don't move he can't see me" or "what, I wasn't doing anything". I'm not sure which, but it is one of them.

    @Knipper:

    Mine has learned not to waste time trying to play with me in the bathroom. I go in, start doing what I need to do, and this little face leans in past the door jam… just enough for the one observant eye to see I am probably indisposed...
    Then all hell breaks loose... How much damage can one (previously sleeping) basenji can get into in just five minutes? Of course my yelling commands with the echoing bathroom walls (ala Wizard of Oz style) does NOTHING!
    Plus the flush is the the alarm bell. She knows to hide as soon as she hears it.
    I walk out of the bathroom with shredded kleenix, phone cords, blankets everywhere, smudged glasses, etc. I keep the door open as a possible deterrent... not that it helps much.

    Even though this is a video of a cat, has your Basenji ever done this, mine has!

    @stash:

    Must say Kaiser is only 11 months old and his owners are well trained in the "leave it then lose it" and "find it then it's mine" tricks, have nearly been in the same position once or twice myself with the bathroom trick, I'm a bit of a slow learner with that trick. Laughs a bundle is a Basenji.

    Jolanda and Kaiser

    Basnji's really are like ninjas, silent and deadly….lol

  • Basenji kisses?
    K Kosuzu

    Yeah, Khalani likes to lick the water out of the shower recess. He also likes to rub himself all over my towel. On more than one occasion I have seen him run down the hall with my towel on his head…..hilarious!!!

  • Inconsistent training
    K Kosuzu

    Only time will tell if my training techniques will work, it is looking good though! I did clicker clicker training but I kept forgetting to take it with me so now I just replace the click with a "yes" to reinforce the good behaviour.
    Khalani is still young, only 11 months old and I would rather teach him the correct behaviour now rather than trying to correct a bad habit later.
    I will get into agility when he is a little older, his bones are still too immature for that yet. I would also like to get Khalani into becoming a "therapy" dog as he has a beautiful nature, He can't be assessed for that until he is at least 18 months old.
    You must tell me more about the "skateboard", does he ride it? Have you ever videoed your agility, I'd love to see that.

  • He just popped his head up!

    I live alone with my 2 boys, one a Minpin, the other a Basenji. being a man, I rarely close the door to the bathroom when I need to go ( if you know what I mean).
    I was sitting reading the paper when suddenly a little face popped under the paper I was reading and a little curious Basenji face looked up at me. I laughed so hard I nearly fell off. Which in hindsight was probably not the best idea as Khalani got excited thinking it was a good time to play ( it wasn't). So, imagine if you will, me in a compromising position ( sorry about the imagery) a Basenji manically running around the bathroom pawing at me, my paper and trying to unroll the toilet paper all at once….hmmmmmm!
    Suffice to say, I now close the bathroom door. Do you get the impression that Basenji's are training us rather than the other way around!?
