How is the puppy. I saw one this week for the first time in all my years [hitting 50 soon!] of Basenjis. Vet attention.. but it requires lubrication and poking it back in throughout the day [as much as possible] to help it get that back to the normal position. It can be fixed and isn't a death sentence.
Let us know how he is doing!!

RE: When to consider breeding?
What TANZA said... find a good breeder for a mentor.... they will share their wide range of experiences and lend their expertise in the area of breeding, exhibiting... if you take the time and learn from someone that have had a vested interest in the breed and it's future, you can gain enough knowledge in order to have the background knowledge to have enough knowledge to possibly breed a litter after a number of years learning about the breed and the ins/outs of showing, performance events, breeding, etc.

RE: dreaming of a Basenji girl... (ILM)
@tanza <-- is completely correct! My mom got her first Basenji in 1965 and started showing and had her first litter in 1969 when I was just a year old. The Basenjis today are not the same. I have scras from Basenjis in my childhood, and we had pretty darned good-tempered Basenjis. But,t hey are nothing like today. Breeders began culling dogs with questionable temperaments.. even if their health was good. What does it matter if they are healthy if they can't be touched/handled extensively?!
Culling those dogs from breeding programs left only the best tempered dogs moving forward... which was of the utmost importance for the future of the breed. -
RE: Hi there, hunting with basenjis, visiting Nocturnal
This breed DOES HAVE HIP DYSPLASIA.
Any breeder NOT testing ALL breeding stock for Hip Dysplasia is NOT a reputable or repsonsible breeder.. PERIOD. -
RE: My B's hocks are down (Walks flat footed)
Since this is a bit old and there hasn't been a reply I wanted to touch base with you.
How about some pictures of Kona's hocks.. that would be helpful to see.
Hope she is doing better and her weight loss is gradually coming down.

RE: Basenji Detal Problems.
There are some lines with lots of dental issues.. I know of some related dogs of these lines that have had many many teeth removed.
In all the years I have had Basenjis, I have never once had a dental done on a dog.. I just make sure they eat their raw bones and scrape their teeth when necessary…. but if you are unlucky and have a dog with a genetic predisposition for teeth issues.. you have a lovely seat at the vet office with your name on it.
Best of luck with your kid. -

RE: Dental cleaning / work advice and dentist recommendation - San Francisco Bay Area
There are a number of things you can do to make sure your dogs teeth don't build up so much tartar and calculus.
I have NEVER had a dog's teeth cleaned…. I scale them at least 1-2x a year and that is all they tend to need.... and "normal" scaling is just using my thumbnail to pull off the tartar and calculus.
Dogs need to have crunchy stuff to chew/gnaw on to keep their teeth clean.. raw bones are great... rawhides on a regular basis work great too.BTW.. I dont' brush my dogs teeth.. the basenjis tend to have much better teeth than the IGs... and I use a gel on my IGs teeth to keep them clean [it is easier than the fight with her to scale/brush them regularly!].

RE: Wanting and needing a Basenji in Iowa
Are you still looking for another Basenji family member? We have a few adults looking for homes if you are interested in checking them out.
-
RE: Simple question about playing bitten each other
I have some dogs that play with lots of growling noises…
and I have some that never make a peep.
I have had dogs that play over bones and squeal like piggies as they hit each other in the face. But, I agree with Pat... when it appears they are fighting with NO NOISE
THEN I get concerned... that is what I would call a Death Match.
Noise is always a good thing...
Silence, in Basenjis, is NOT golden!!Crate them when gone... just for safety's sake...
better safe than sorry. -

RE: Too old?
But Shelley, that isn't the point.
What happens when your dogs pass and you want another dog.
You don't want a rescue.
You don't want a puppy.
But you for sure want a Basenji.
That is when you are thankful for those breeders willing to let you be in the presence of one of their "golden opportunity" adult Basenjis. -
RE: Beautisimous Brindle/White Female Available in Portland, Oregon
Keep you eye on Michael… THAT is the temperament that he is producing.. because that is how he is.. I love it!

RE: Rescued Basenji's play turns to biting
Sounds like at 3 years old he is just now learning what it means to play.
I have heard of using the OUCH very loud when he nips…. basically the dog thinks "uh oh that was not a good thing to do"
Encourage play, just work on play where he gets his energy out but not psycho play. Taking him for walks isn't going to be enough.. that doesn't get out the energy like running like a wild banshee. He needs to release some energy.. perhaps a dog park or a locked up tennis court when you could throw a ball for him to chase around?
