My basenji Kaia just turned 4 years old. We've always had a bit of difficulty getting her entirely housebroken - she messes in the house every once in a while, but had a months long streak of being good. The only common denominator in her messing in the house is that she typically does so when we've left her alone in the house (even though we have a 9 year old German Spitz at home as well). However, in the last week she has messed in the house EVERY. TIME. we go out. It's gotten so bad my parents can't even go sit outside without taking her out because if they do she'll piss on the kitchen floor. We've put a gate up to quarantine her in the kitchen as punishment and have taken to doing so when we go out just to keep the pee contained, but without fail, there's a puddle when we get home. We're running out of ideas. Any insight/tips?

More than one heat??
Kali's in heat again, and this has confounded my family and I because we thought that Bs were supposed to go into heat once a year in the fall. Did I read somewhere that having more than one dog can affect the cycle?
Someone fill me in please!

Eye issues
Hey guys.
Kali has had some strange eye issues. When we first got her, her eyelashes grew in her eyes, causing her to squint and scratch at it all the time. We fixed that, but she always holds that eye closed more than the other, and there was always less hair around that eye. Now the other eye has way less hair around it, and she's sort of squingting in that one, too. She's also shedding a lot too, especially on her neck.
We still have that stray we found in January. Could it possibly be that Kali is just stressed out that there's an intruder on her turf?
Thoughts?

Eating & other dogs?
So on Sunday morning we got a call from our neighbors saying "Hey, theres little brown dog on your deck." so we go out and look and there it is. After about a half an hour of cooing and calling to it, we finally got it inside and out of the cold. She is still here, though we think we may have found its owner, but Kali is having eating issues. She hardly eats her food without you actually placing her infront of her food and making sure she eats it like a 5 year old eating their vegetables. And even then she hardly eats it.
I ask you wise B owners, does this have something to do with this other dog, or do I need to call the vet?

Length of Heat Cycle??
Hey guys.
Kali just went into heat a few days ago, and this is her first heat, so we're all a little confused because we've never had a female dog, let alone a basenji.
We've done some reading, and we've learned that the heat cycle is once a year. But we can't seem to find anything telling us about how long the cycle lasts. So could any of you tell me?

RE: "Conquering"
so you guys are saying that her hair is raised because she's aroused and circling to figure out whats going on?
-
RE: "Conquering"
Yes, but what about the circling? I understand the hair standing on end now, she's just aroused, but why does she circle my head? It's also not just me, she circles anyone who is lying on the floor.

RE: "Conquering"
i know, my dad read that. That kinda worries me too, like she's circling my head is she plotting my demise?

RE: Baroos before dinner video!!
haha! that was funny! Kali has yet to make a noise like that. I showed my mom and she wouldn't stop laughing. Here's another funny one:

it doesn't sound terribly happy though!

RE: "Conquering"
No, she doesn't make much noise at all actually. She just circles continuously around your head until you get up.

RE: Lotion licker!!!
It seems like Kali will lick any lotion of my mom and I, especially philosophy's amazing grace. She also likes the freshwater cucumber hydration gel from bath and body works…I always thought it was because of Kali being a water fiend. Is thirst a trademark of basenji's?

"Conquering"
Okay, well, my dog Kali is 7 months old (today, actually) and she's very playful. Sometimes, when you lay flat on your stomach on the floor, Kali will run over and start walking in circles around your head with her fur standing straight up. My mom calls this "conquering", but I really want to know why she does this. Do any of your Basenji's do anything like this and what does it mean?
