Basenji family not getting along.
I’m in a delima, I have three basenjis, Belle came to us at 6 weeks old we chose her from a litter of 8 pups, her father and mother were both show dogs, i fostered two 7 month old in poor shape from a puppy mill, I’m a foster failure, I kept them. Belle was not happy, as they got older the house was crowed and they were always underfoot, so got a big dod house and fenced in the yard better , so they have been outside dogs for about 8 years, they love, in the past 2 years my Belle has gotten into fights with the boys, and caused vet bills, she biting them on their legs, which causes muscle damage . They get plenty of exercise, But my female is getting very aggressive with the boys, what do you , my basenj friends recommend how I might handle this?

RE: Destructive behavior
**also punishment is what humans do when they don’t get the behavior they want, dogs need lots of walks, running, playing. We had couch wrestling every night in the wintertime because I couldn’t get out as much.Mine know Stop, Come and Sit and no matter what they are doing , they mind, I’ve never laid a hand on my dogs, my voice tone, and hand jesters. Good luck, it’s hard work being a basenji owner.

RE: Destructive behavior
*My motto, as an owner of three B’s, a tired basenji is a good basenji, ‘ need exercise, running in particular, I took my three to an enclosed 5 mi wooded dog park twice a day, or they would destroy furniture, unattended glasses, phones, cords, you name it! These dogs are hunters, sniffers and sharp eyesight, you have to wear them out physically and mentally. I work from home so I’ve always had the time to care for them .

RE: Favorite Toys
Get to know your puppy, when I brought my first B home she was 6 weeks old and had just started eating kibble. She tore up every single toy, squeakers included, she enjoyed sleeping in the sun shine and looking out the window, sometimes she would run around the hose at very high speed, we called it the “basenji 500” I wouldn’t spend too much, I have three now and they like living outside, the have Hugh pen, a heated dog house and get long walks in our woods. Enjoy.

RE: Use of Rescue Remedy
My first B, I got her at six weeks, she slep with us the first 4 or 5 months , than we got a crate put the bed she had been sleeping in, and after her basenji 500 run through the house every night she got in the crate and went to sleep at exactly 8:30 every night, when I go my two rescues boys, she shared the crate with them, I guess I was fortunate to have such a bright girl!

RE: You know you are a basenji owner when...
I don’t bathe my three very often, they’re outside all the time and sleep in their dog house with hay and a heater when it gets cold,
We bathe them when they get muddy at the park. -
RE: Clocks go forward and back - How to set the Basenji tummy clocks !

RE: Freshly Spayed and want advice
that does seem excessive, Id take her on a leash walk a few times a day, not long walks, shes had surgery. if she is wearing a cone to prevent her from licking her stitches out, shell need a walk or two, If your giving her pain meds, ( shich I did for mine) shes be kind loopy ) The stiches will bother her, Basenjis like to chew, and groom, I had to isolate mine because of the licking each other, and concern.. It will be fine, some vets are just over protective,

RE: Freshly Spayed and want advice
My 2 boys basenjis Ra & Shango, will be 8 and My queen, Belle, will be 9, Ive learned that a tired basenji is not a mischievous one. I take them to dog parks for the fast running they like to do, chasing is good for them, they are still playful and active, dog parks give them the smelling and running action they need to be healthy, and happy.
Ive only had one incident that I stayed out of and the basenjis handled themselves, no injury, the humans was mad because his tough dog , cowered to my 3, but his dog was aggressive and hurting other dogs and the basenj's went to the rescue. They show me when its time for them to go, and fall asleep are snuggled in a pile. than home, and they are very chilled, my pack likes to stay outside, it a tropic jungle and they love it.Everyone is different in caring for they B.s, but with three I have a bit of advice under my belt.

RE: cat friendly Basenji
@DebraDownSouth My basenjis love being outside, they run, play have shade, climb up on their table to rest, they have a hugh dog house for shelter, with a heater, when its gets cold, fresh water all day, , they race at the hugh park, get their teeth brushed every night when they come in the house to have dinner, get treats in the morning when I have my coffee outside with them.they have hay to make a nest. They have never like the house, they did to much damage anyway, and I dont hit my dogs to get them to behave the way humans want them too. Do not feel sorry for them. I an excellent basenji mom. The Ferrell cats that come into our yard are on their own, and my B,s chase them down, and sometimes catch them. survival of the fittest, these are not pets of anyone, we have a Ferrell cat problem where I live, they breed and leave the babies in our front garden, I take them to our human society, and never see them again, most of them are euthanized for leukemia. I m sorry you assumed they were killers of all cats, but in my experience Ive not see a basenji like cats or tolerate them. My trainer said not to mix those two breeds of animals. .

RE: cat friendly Basenji
You were somewhat lucky with your basenjis temperament. most of the ones I know are not that amiable with catss. .
-
RE: cat friendly Basenji
I dont know why animal lovers want or need to mix dogs and cats, My 3 B's are outdoor dogs, they are hunters, the kill cats that come into our yard, its only natural. Basenjis are hunters, it cant be trained out of them.

RE: Wheezing , no energy or thirst
did not see this until now, no update on condition, but I would get a new vet, Id go to an emergency vet place, poos little guy is probably dehydrated, which can cause organ damage, and probably has kennel cough or something similar, I fear for the worse if no action is taken immediately.
