  • Squiggy's results are in…

    Jennifer- I got your email. My info on Squiggy is at work, so I will get it to you tomorrow. He was born (I think) in 2002.

    Thank you everyone, I know he isnt a traditional color. But, man, do I love him and his whole look:) When I was looking with BRAT he came up available. His story won me over. He went from a very nervous, flinchy, non-social boy who would pace circles if anyone came over to a shy and sweet loverboy that warms up quick to strangers.

    I know his outcome doesnt guarantee he will never get fanconi, but I can rest a bit easier and know his chances are slim. I will keep strip testing him.

    OK, I have tried to search for more info.
    What are my next steps?I know to continue strip testing (just incase).
    What does "probable carrier" really mean?

    Thanks

    @DebraDownSouth:

    Sorry that he is a probable carrier. Was BRAT unable to get any pedigree from the woman who gave him up? He is quite darling!

    Thank you, he is a sweetheart too :)

    No they wernt. She had had him about 2.5 years then put him up with BRAT, I have had him since Nov 2005 .I have always strip tested him but just now got him tested (I know, should have done it earlier).
    She didnt keep the "papers" she got from the petstore. But had the petstore name. A few years ago, I called the petstore with as much info I had (DOB, name of purchaser, date purchased) and tried to find out where they got him. The lady was amazing, made some calls to the mgr who used to work there, went through old files, and could only come up with that it was "probably an Amish family they used to get dogs from at that time".
    I even checked back with the origional owner (after she moved- the reason for the surrender) to see if she found anymore of his info- nope.

    Results: PROBABLE CARRIER

    Squigs is a BRAT boy that was surrendered from a lady who purchased him from a petstore. I dont know his pedigree except he probably came from an Amish puppymill (I contacted the petstore last year and they tried to find out as much as possible for me)

    His pic is here :)

    2 of your cats aren't sphynx are they? that would be just too funny.
    We have 2 sphynx and a siamese (hairless cats, barkless dog?? :p)
    Well good luck with your new pup, when it gets here. I think the frenchie pups are so cute. And I love the name Dexter, it sounds so grown up. Sorry, he didnt make it.
    Phoebe came from a breeder in KY that was going to put her down because she had lots of abdominal hernias and the cost (from her vet) was the price she was selling her pups for. (I know, nice breeder). I had been calling rescues and breeders looking for a rescue or a retired adult. The breeder told me to come get her, but there was no guarantee on if she would make it and that she would be "my problem now". Well, little Phoebe came home with me and my vet did the surgery (it was an "it might work" type of surgery) and did her spay at the same time. Cost me about $200 (I used to work there, love my vet) and she has been just fine ever since. I really lucked out with her.
    We are getting ready to combine homes in June -This should be a blast :rolleyes:
    Him- 1 giant siamese and 1 snorty French Bulldog.
    Me- 1 quirky B and 2 loving, but phoebe hating, sphynx.

    @basenjilover11:

    We actually have our heart set on the french bulldog breed. I know I know, we are traitors, but all animals need loving and we are not biased :)

    Ok :)
    Good name for yourself –-check
    Good looking basenji---check
    and now looking for a frenchie????---check
    1 B, 1 frenchie and 3 cats---check

    Are we the same person ;)

    I have a 6yo frenchie named phoebe.
    What a hoot. She is so sweet, but so loud (snoring and tooting and barking). But a great dog.
    The only problem we have is that my B get her running and she gets overheated and out of breath in the hotter months.
    There are a few on petfinder.

    @basenjilover11:

    Actually we are lesbians, so I do not think it is a gender issue. It might have to do with dominance, however my girlfriend is the one who does the disciplining. We both give him his treats, however I usually give him his favorite chew toys. He listens to only sit, he was a show dog so surely he must know other commands but I have yet to figure them out. I am hoping that once I speak with Andrea she can steer me in the right direction. She knows his previous owner. Thank you so much for all of your suggestions, I am going to try the alone time thing with him and even try feeding him a meal a day and see where that gets me.

    I am an idiot :o Sorry to assume.
    Good luck with everything- Sid will come around.–I never thought mine would, and he did :)

    Ooh, more.

    Squiggy was a pacer too. He is fine now around most people but still goes back to circling when there are too many new people.

    Can your GF give you an hour or so a day with just you and him in the home? might help speed things up.

    Also, Squiggy likes me best but he will "dump" me in a heart beat if Jason (the fiance) will keep petting him.

    Hi,
    I have a rescue B. Not the same situation (mine was abused) but he was very man shy. It took him about a year to warm up to my fiance (although we didnt live together, he was still over frequently). Now, Squiggy acts like a normal dog around him.
    Give it time, you will be glad you did.
    Also, schedule some alone time with him- and "special" treats (high value ones) that only you give him.
    It will be alright :)

    Squiggy was 2 or 3 when I got him (time flys when you are having fun) He is now 7.

    @dcmclcm4:

    She has been adopted but if she gets returned for some reason, a rescue group in Indianapolis will take her. She did eat a microphone or something similar from a desk at the shelter!

    Well, that answers the Q about if she is PB :p

  • Do your male basenjis squat to pee?
    C ChristyRutherford
    23 Mar 2010, 19:49

    @Woofless:

    Yep! Jibini, neutered at 8 months old, still gets "hunched" in the morning before he goes outside. He even does it after a long nap.

    My husband thinks its hilarious….he always figured "morning glory" was a purely human phenomenon. :p

    Jibini also squats to pee. Usually stretches out, and occasionally his knees also touch the ground. I've never seen him lift his leg. Jibini also does the poop-spin, occasionally combined with the poop-walk. When we drove a truck, I used to joke that Jibini got paid better for a load with "multiple drops". Bad trucker bathroom humor? LOL.

    hahaha at the multiple drops :)
    I think our boys might be related ;)
    We always just say "Squiggy, were you having a good dream?" He even walks around until he done hump walking- crazy boy.

    Welcome!
    2 questions:
    1. Where did you get your screen name from "Brand X"–any chance it is a CF ref? :)
    2. Are you in Indiana? I am just NW of Indy!

    I wish I had room for another and I would go get her right now.:(
    I hope BRAT pulls her.

    @Kananga:

    Now that is funny! :D

    I always chuckle when Kananga stretches out when he squats. He's almost on his knees sometimes. :rolleyes:

    Squiggy does this. His knees have touched the ground before.
    If squiggy decides to hike his leg, he always rests it on something. The little pavers on my flower bed, the fence- and he only lifts it like 3 inches up. I think it is more like a modified squat ;)

    He also walks and twirls when he poops.

    Does anyone's male dog do a hunch walk when they wake up?

    Andrew- I am so sorry about Shango.
    But glad he is feeling better.
    Which park were you at?
    Did they get they guys name- he needs to be banned from the park and his key taken back (if it was a dog park with a key).
    Anyway, I'd like to know.
    Thanks

    I had to tell the BF to quit petting him so vigorously :p
    We go outside for our brushings now a few times a day.

    Hi Andrew!
    I am in Lebanon In. Nice to see another Indiana B on here.
    I usually go to the Eagle Creek dog park on Friday nights when the weather is nice. I take my B boy and my parents B boy.
    We have had good luck there and never any "issues" with either of mine or other visiting dogs.
    Everyone there is real attentive to their dogs and how they are acting.
    Nice to meet ya.
