Hi everyone, Thanks for the advice. He does have a microchip, in addition to the GPS tracker. My main concern is not that he will not come back if he runs away, but that he could be run over by a car, since he likes to try to chase animals when we are out. Once when he escaped I was in a soccer field and I did lay down, as I was tired of trying to catch him. He did come check me out, so I agree that this works well.

The tracker does work great, and at this point it is more of an insurance since I have not had any more issues with him getting out. He is almost two now, so I guess learned a lot. He outsmarted me constantly in the first year and a half, but now I am catching up to his tricks...I hope!

@DebraDownSouth I was going to suggest that maybe a phone conversation might help. When I was a kid, our family dog was most attached to our Mother so when she unexpectedly landed in the hospital, the dog was just beside himself. After about 3 or 4 days, Mom called the house & wanted to talk to the dog & Skip got geared up like she just walked in the door!!! So we "allowed" Skip a phone call to Mom about every other day & both did okay! But when she came home, Skip stayed by her side for about a week except to eat & go out to relieve himself. But now days, with skype ~ Deb, that's an excellent idea!!

Ask the breeder how big the sire and dam are. That's a good idea. My first basenji, who was a champion, weighed nearly 26 pounds when she matured. My 2nd one would have been about that, but thanks to steroids, we did good to keep her at 30. My current rescue is a giant. We won't go there. I first dreamed of a SMALL dog, maybe 15 pounds tops after years of being a BIG DOG person (rottweilers and chows). I don't see that ever happening.
