Hi, I will add my two cents to the “food” question. My boy now 13 years old and very healthy has had food allergies and I finally discovered raw bison ( ground) and not that expensive. I cook it in bone broth ( be sure it is pure bone broth and not chicken broth) then I also found Open Farm Lamb kibble , I give him both of these together and OMG not only normal poops but no more allergies! You can cook the Bison on top of your stove adding the bone broth then store it in the refrigerator. I warm his a bit in the microwave each morning and evening.

Hello, I have had similar problems with my boy, now 13 years old. But, i finally resolved them...maybe you can too.
I changed his dry food to "Lamb" which I choose "Open Farm" because it is a very "clean" food, it is a dry kibble. Then I purchase "bone broth" not chicken or beef, just plain bone broth, no other ingredients in it, so look carefully. I warm a little of that and pour over his dry kibble. I also found a lamb food made by Whole PAWS, grain free no corn, soy or wheat, it is not in a can, but small 3,5oz containers that have a peel back lid. He loves this food and I mix all of them together.
Another thought, has his teeth been checked? My guy ( and they can't tell us) had a broken tooth that needed to be removed, what a difference it made!
One more thing, sometimes they need the 10 mg of over the counter Famotidine , it is an acid reducer. I give it to him in the morning.

So wonderful of you to rescue him....I rescued my boy at 2...he was awful! But with a lot of patience and consistent training and love he has become a wonderful boy!! Now 10 years old.

Hi, WOW..although some great info..I will share mine. I have had two Basenji's, my girl pasted away about 1 yr. ago at 18. I rescued both she and Rickie. Rickie was 1 1/2 yrs old and a MAJOR handful, VERY alpha and it was his way or the highway. One thing that will help is the type of food you feed your Basenji. Believe me, it will make a huge difference in the temperament. These Basenji's have (for the most part) a very sensitive tummy. It took me years to figure this out!
And as said earlier by someone, they LOVE routines. My guy attack me 4 times the 1st year I had him..not nice! As for food, as you may know the cannot tolerate wheat, corn, soy or ANY grain foods..it makes them itch on the inside! Also, again, just my experience...chicken is tooooo high in protein..so I use turkey. Crating...not good, they HATE being confined. I agree, you can train your little one out of most these behaviors, but it takes time and consistency. My boy Rickie is almost the perfect Basenji...and he is a great listener and knows I am the BOSS!!! I have a few tricks to help you..if you want to hear them let me know. I will ALWAYS have a Basenji! And I might add, they don't always need another cat or dog to be happy, my Rickie loves being my "only one". Good luck to you.

Miss her! I also got Rickie from you in or about 2005 , he was 1 and 1/2 ...and a pistol...his original name was peanut. He is going to be 13 next month and a wonderful guy!! Just had his teeth cleaned and he has grown up to be a bright guy! Everyone who sees him admired him! Thank

My boy Rickie is 10 and has developed several of these lumps. My Vet says the same, don't remove if not necessary. Does anyone know what causes these??? My Rickie is not over weight, very lean. Thank you for any information.

I had a girl named Emma, rescued her in Ca. from Medfly Briggade. Emma I think was part pit and Basenji, but what a sweetheart! She was 3 when I got her and 18 when she passed, just of old age. She too was brindle with all the white socks etc.,....beautiful dog!

I now have only Rickie, which is now 10, rescued him at 1 yr old, get dog also, but was a handful in the beginning. YES...they are so smart!

OMG! You are so right...Basenji's are not dogs...they are so special. I have little Rickie, he is beautiful...a show stopper now 11 years old. Never would I have any other breed of but these creatures!

Great info....I only have Rickie get rabies vac once every 3 years...nothing else. What is titring? When I looked it up it was defined as "half laugh" , so maybe you mean 1/2 dose? Thanks for reply

Did you find a home for her? I reside in So. Orange county and I adore Basenji's, I have Rickie whom I adopted at 1 1/2 yr's old, he is now 11 and such a sweet guy! Please let me know as I may be interested in adopting and spoiling your girl!

Hi to all of u B owners! They r the most wonderful creatures in the dog world! I lost my 18 year old girl a few years ago, it was so sad for me, she was a brindle and so beautiful! I rescued my boy, who is going to be 13 this year..he has his aging issues but people say he looks so young. I know there will come a time for him to cross over to puppy heaven...but we all love our B’s so much! I wish the best for all those who whom r helping our B’s as they age.

Hello all you Basenji owners...a few weeks ago the FDA made a major call out on grain free foods and report that they have found them to cause heart disease! I thought I was correct in thinking these special dogs were not to be fed wheat,corn,soy
am I wrong? Currently using a dry food made by OPEN FARM. It is a humanely & sustainably sourced pasture raised Lamb recipe. Lamb raised on grass fed diet, free from antibiotics & added growth hormones. 100% traceable ingredients.
Ingredients ~ Lamb,Chickpeas,Ocean whitefish, Field peas,Herring meal,coconut oil,red & green lentils, pumpkin,salmon Oil,cranberries,chicory root,apples,choline chloride (?) , salt,mixed tocopherols (preservative) Vit E ,riboflavin,Vit d,vit b12, turmeric.
The report from FDA says ANY grain free is not good! especially those with chick peas, etc.
Please let me know your thoughts on this..my little guy is 12 and slowing down and usually does not eat well..any suggestions are appreciated.
One last thing, has anyone used "Pet-Fresh" dog food?

Hi, well u have a lot of responses but here is mine. My boy has ALWAYS been a picky eater but my 1st girl B was not.
My boy also got car sick in the beginning. He is 13 now!
I found a great dry lamb food by Open Farms ( chicken messes with his tummy even though he loves it) then I buy ground Bison and sorta stir fry it in pan with Bone Broth, I add the 3 together and hooray no more tummy issues

They are right, Basenjis can really display anxiety issues if left alone...my guy has just leaving him at home for 2 hours...
