RE: Hello from Mississippi!
it just seems a little OCD in the forum, because all basenji's are related here or should be according the folks that track it, and you know you do.
Do you seek out the one's you lost, and are out of your control, yes, and ask new pup owner's where they got pup's you don't know about. YES.
As a recipient of one such pup, to have in my home as a pet, then come here, a whole different perspective starts to open up, and persists because you condone it by using health as an over ridding factor, sorry, doesn't cut it in today's society. They are two different questions, so quit transferring the justification for one to the other.

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
Is it also normal for breeders to go off forum (email) to discern breeding, because they lost contact with someone they sold a dog too?

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
Ok, this has nothing to do with health issues, or breed education, your going to find that with any dog forum. I'm talking about this weird control vibe that goes on here.
Look at the poster above my last, I have no connection or knowledge of this person, but did notice some facts,
join date july 2011
let me post some interesting items from his/her post
'I'm fairly new here, and I was welcomed without the 3rd degree"
"However, I have seen some new people interrogated to the point where they didn't come back, and that is unfortunate"
Point in question- look at those key words "3rd degree" "interrogated"
Now I don't want to quote out of context, because I will also say they PRAISED the efforts of all involved in the community, which no one dis reputes.
So it would seem to me, you have driven off quite a few people over the years.
I joined in 08' and in 12' same crap, leave your breading contracts at home, god forbid someone might hear about a great and loving family pet called a Basenji.

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
I was trying to make that point, thank you, albeit a little dramatically but it did get noticed, those wagon trains circled faster than a B doing the 500 around the living room.
It's a small group that owns these dogs, as compared to say a breed that can be commonly found in any town USA.
This is after all the top listed site if you Google Basenji Forums, as a new owner would do seeking information, but you show up with a new pup pic that isn't acquired from the community, and well it shift's real quick to where that pup came from because a breading contract was broken at some point, and that B most likely came from lineage associated with a reputable breeder.
I'm just trying to say questions of pup origin do not belong in a category labeled "introduce your self", that's it, even if the intent was for the betterment/protection of the breed. No disrespect is meant, I just said things a little more direct than most would.

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
So if it turn's out that his dog is from a byb, then I think the conversation takes a little different turn, don't you? And that's really what the poster was asking when she inquired about origins.

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
We do like to ask questions about health testing .
Well, that is quite fine, you are obviously one of the people I was speaking of. I know the facts of the bread and the health concerns, and because I can read, I did the research my self and am in no need of further education by you.
This is an introduction section, and the first question she asked was where did you get your dog from, hmmmmmmmmm, I think she has other motives for asking the question in the first place dont you? Is it often the first question she ask's, hmmmm?
Want to go further?

RE: Hello from Mississippi!
Many of us are related by our Basenjis. Care to share his breeding/breeder? Welcome to the Forums.
If your B is a family pet, and not for breeding I would stay clear of answering questions like this and the people who ask them, as they tend to ask such questions with all new posters. It will only lead to criticism and contempt, if the dog didn't come out of there known breeder community you will never hear the end of it.
Welcome, you will find decent people here, but also some snarky breed snobs that just can't seem to mind there own buisness as well.

RE: Who has the largest Basenji
What is the standard for a female. Marley is 9 days shy of 6 mo's and weighed 18.8 lbs at the vet yesterday. I will measure her height tonight and post a new pic.

RE: Jackpot's new jacket
What brand is it? I like the reflective stripe.

RE: Marley and the pumpkin
It was kind of funny how cautious she acted towards the pumpkins, she has not acted that way with anything else. Took her a good 5 min to even get close enough to smell one.

RE: Marley
I posted some newer pics in the correct topic if any one wants to see new pics of her. cheers on a happy belated Halloween.

RE: Marley
Well lets look at it constructively, the way the health hazards were presented to me, I found rude, most of them I already knew about anyway, its common wikipedia info, much less here or front page on any other Basenji site.
It was not the information I found unsettling, it was the way it was presented and forced upon, have some tact about it, people that are new members don't want a lecture delivered from high upon the moutain. And the argument that the message overrides how it is delivered is just the easy way out.
We all care about our animals, maybe consider the new owners as much when they join the forum as well, after all the information is free here and everywhere, it takes effort to be a member of a online community, other wise everybody wolud just lurk.

RE: Marley
I mentioned this before, but you can not expect every person that comes here will feel the warm and fuzzies we did. You all have valid points but I don't think anyone is doing anything wrong. A sticky would be fine, but would they read it? If they didn't take the time to research the dog breeder why would they take the time to research a forum?
Besides the only people that get upset are the ones who did not get their dog from a reputable breeder. Like myself, I got the same questions. I came here to learn and talk about my love of this breed. Some people are just overly sensative.
well it seems like I have sparked a flame in the forum, not my intention. though I do disagree with the fact that I did not research this forum for knowledge about the breed. apparently I got my baby B from a BYB, that is my bad but she is in a good home and on to a good future. To set the record straight I got Marley , My first dog by the way , because she fit my family
I did spot the very same trend that some members have pointed out, I was very hesitent to even post at all because I knew it would come up, but I wanted to share what a wonderful beauty she was. I'm not overly sensitive but honestly if your B is not a rescue or from a registered breeder, your just looking in on the outside here. I did not realize there was such a thing as a BYB, when I got her.
So maybe I brought some issues to light that have been overlooked.
I thank all of the members that have been supportive, not of me but of the issue.

RE: Marley
So here is a partial exchange from her, great job Diane.
\
Oh well - that's too bad as you loose out on the opportunity to register with AKC to participate in some fun activities like Rally Obedience.
In any event - it is likely that a male from a breeding that should not have happened is the sire. That would mean that on that side there is a thyroid issue temperament issue, fanconi and hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Since I don't know where the dam is from you will need to watch for fanconi, hip dysplasia, Hemolytic anemia, Malabsorbtion, thyroid and there is a puppy mill near me that has sold some dogs to some 'breeders' in MO that had Von Wildebrands (a blood disorder typically found in dobermans) Some there is screening for:
fanconi - screening tool and then if affected you will want to start the diet protocol BEFORE symptomatic. if a carrier no worries unless you are going to breed. (for a small segment of the population this test is not working very well and some who came out clear - actually were affected. The variable 'appears' to be an old genetic mutation related to Malabsorption and to date only pinpointed by one breeder)
PRA - need a vet opthamoligist familiar with a basenji eye (untreatable but will tell you that your dog will go blind)
PPM - as above but will impair vision right now - sometimes iris to iris strands are a precursor to Glaucoma which can result in blindness, severe eye pain and sometimes you need to remove the eye.
HA - Reputable breeders eliminated it from breeding stock years ago - PM's did not - untreatable
Malabsorption - same as above - depending on the severity untreatable.
hip dysplasia - you can x-ray at 2 yrs of age and send to Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) so you know if as the dog ages you will have to consider replacing the hip.
Thyroid - like everything else with a basenji - normal for all dogs in thyroid is too low for basenjis - when you do the thyroid screening ask for a full panel not just the T4. Start looking for this if: THe dog gains a lot of weight, coat is dull and dry, changes in behavior to more aggressive or hyper. Treatable with supliment of Soloxine.
That about covers it - better to have info you may not need than need info that you may not have.

RE: Marley
I am sorry but I am going to have to withdraw from this wonderful forum, I find diane mcarthy's repeated inquaries as to where I obtained my puppy completely out of line and offensive. I will be glad to post the email exchange between us over the past couple of days, because it seems you can't post here with out having proof of pedigree, even if it's evident in the pics that she is. So Diane thanks for driving off a newly devoted B owner.

RE: Marley
Thank you all for the kind word's, I got her from a local lady here in Springfield, Missouri. She has two B's, it was the female's first litter of 6, I met the mother she is a brown and white. Marley was the last pup available, I guess the timing was right.
My wife and I also have two male Dachshund's. Marley has already become the alpha female of the pack.
