RE: She bit a frog! HELP!
You are very right to be concerned. We lost a beagle 3 weeks ago and only just discovered over the weekend that it was a bufo frog. (after reading an article on Friday about them) I found and destroyed one in my backyard.

RE: Florida Basenji's
Well this Sunday is going to be the Rays game. Everyone is telling me how lucky I am to be going to a sold out game (but I would rather be going to the dog park) I do beleive Kizzie and Pikachu would agree! Hope to go next Sunday!

RE: Florida Basenji's
Well Kizzie appears to be a Houdini. I am using that special collar/harness that goes around the neck and under the armpits. (as I was told they are supposed to be basenji proof) Well she got out of it during our walk two nights ago. She got panicked by a person in the area and just backed right out of it. To say I was panicked but KNOW bettter than to chase her would be an understatement. I "acted" calm/normal as she trotted in the other direction. Then Pikachu and I did an about face and headed back to the house. (Needless to say- Kizzie beat us home and was waiting on the porch) thank-goodness she apparently loves us!!! As we LOVE her dearly as well.

RE: Florida Basenji's
Silver has become Kizzies favorite non B friend. Kizzie has not met the horse (Shadow) yet, as he lives off site at a stable. He is the bay thourobred -the first one in the horse pictures. Taz is the big black and white cat and the other cat is "Zahara". As you can see Kizzie has lots of "friends".:D

RE: Florida Basenji's
the other animals needed some face time
The first picture is of a "Serval" and no I don't own him, however they are used in the breeding program for my other cats which are "Savannahs". I beleive my cat "Silver" is able to better relate to Kizzie as they are both a bit wild! With Silver is "Zahara". I also have another cat "Taz" for the next post.

Kizzie is settling in nicely. She is doing great with Pikachu and has fallen for our cat "Silver". Planning on going to the Tampa dog park tomorrow (if we don't get rained out).

It is hard to beleive after all these dogs have gone through that they are so adaptable. SO glad to hear things are going well for you! Trish

RE: The Girl from Wimauma
Perhaps Isis is getting to much freedom. We are only letting Kizzie off leash in our fenced yard if we are right there to keep on eye on her and interact. Since these "B"s are very food motivated, I am using the tiny training bits as a reward. She gets a reward when she comes to me, etc. Otherwise for regular potty breaks I take her in my fenced yard- on leash. The twice a day walks are a great time to bond also, she knows when it is walk time and her and Pikachu patiently wait at the door for me to get them ready. I spend a lot of time with her just talking to her, brushing her and petting her. She has a blanket that she knows is hers. When we are watching tv she sits on her blanket at our feet. She will hang out on the couch or bed but only if we pick her up and put her there, she is not getting up by herself, yet. We also put her blanket on the bed so she has "her spot". I think the blanket (a nice soft fleece) is her "safety" zone, regardless of where I place it.

RE: The Girl from Wimauma
Good morning! I am the owner of Kizzie which is Isis's (previously Bibi) sister . I sure am sorry to hear you are having some behavior issues with Isis. However I think that is extremely typical Basenji fashion for the Alpha dog. It sounds like she is just trying to set the pecking order. I agree with all the other post's to seperate them for food/treats/toys. At least until she gets more comfortable. Kizzie is on the opposite side, her personality is very shy and timid. She is doing great with our older basenji Pikachu. Pikachu is the alpha dog here and does not hesitate to let Kizzie know. The other part of the equation is that this herd survived because of the "survival of the fittest" that is also why they are larger dogs. They weeded out the smaller ones. If you haven't already talked to her foster "Mom" , Susan - I would do so. She fostered both Isis and Kizzie since February. We were lucky enough to meet and spend time with her. I know for sure that they were around other basenjis during the foster period. She may be able to suggest some ideas and give you some insight. I know she said Isis was more socialized than Kizzie. However I do not think Isis was the alpha dog at the foster home. She is trying to see how far she can push you and what she can get away with. Just make sure she knows you are the alpha of the herd and she has to respect your boundaries! *(easier said than done!) when dealing with a "B".
We have settled into a nice routine with Kizzie, including am and pm walks. She has not had an "accident" since arriving in our home and today is a week. (great job and thank-you Susan!) Each day is a tiny step towards her becoming more comfortable with us, our home and Pikachu. Oh did I mention I have 3 cats? The funny thing with these "B"'s is that they take to other animals (including the cats) quicker than they take to humans. We also have stairs and that was a first for Kizzie. She is doing great, is a quick learner and is very smart (in my humble opinion). She is just starting to "play" with her toys and she enjoys being brushed. She has slept in our bed since the first night. Pikachu does not mind letting her know that she intends to take the "best" spot in the bed, but they have worked it out nicely. Patience, baby steps, and lots of TLC will lead to a happy ending for all!
Sincerely,
Trish and Joe -
RE: Florida Basenji's
:)What a wonderful opportunity to open our home and our heart to such a deserving B. She is doing great. She is timid and beautiful. All the neighbors are asking about her on our walks. I do beleive her coat color and eye color are thorowbacks from the African blood in her. Do other people who have B's ever see their tails wag? She hasn't done it here yet (but hopefully will soon) but we did see her wag at BRAT on Saturday, when she was reunited with her beautiful sister Bibi. (Bibi is in a couple of the pictures I am attaching). I understand she also found a forever home. There are lots of B's at BRAT in Seminole still waiting for their new humans!

RE: Wild pack of basenjis in rural Florida
Here is the mahogany colored female, Kizzie, with green-gold eyes…stunning!
Well, thanks to this thread (dont know how I missed the story in the news), we visited Pam and the rescued Basenji's today. We brought our 10 year old basenji with us, and we all had a blast. We decided to adopt Kizzie and give her the loving home she deserves. We recently lost a beagle of 10 years and our basenji has been so lost without "her beagle". My wife and I love animals, have been married 21 years, and have no kids, so our animals have always been our kids. They are spoiled just as much as any of our friends or relatives kids, and we enjoy doing it. We are ready for the unique challenge that awaits us. Our goal is to get Kizzy comfortable enough that she want to go out in the boat with us, as we live on the Gulf, and our basenji loves to go boating.
Pam still had at least 1 puppy, a few kids and lots of adults available. My wife would have taken a few more home if I would have agreed.:) -
RE: Basenji without spunk - very sick, pls read
Betsey,
I am SO sorry to hear about Beta. I know like me, she is your child.
I can sympathize and am crying as I type this.
At least you were able to rescue her and provide these last years of a loving home with the best care possible.
Hang in there….....
(My dog Pikachu is Betseys other Basenji "Ceasar" s, Mom)
Love Trish and Pikachu
