RE: B with diabetes
@dagodingo
They have him right now on Novolin 5ml x twice a day. They don't want me testing him yet. His vet is keeping him overnight next week to monitor glucose & do this every 3 months over the next 9 months. I feed Jaberi Fromm gold right now he's getting a cup with a topper of Turkey, carrots, peas, pumpkin, zucchini, chicken hearts, bone broth, pinto beans &turmeric. He is weighing in at 23lbs he has always weighed 32/33 lbs. All he does is lay around. I tried to take him for a walk only took him couple of blocks. He seemed shaky when we got back. I just hope I can just get him regulated. I'm looking into the cataract surgery but I hear it's quiet expensive.. -
RE: B with diabetes
@debradownsouth
I'm really confused too how could you not notice 400 bs. I notice when they weighed him he had lost
like 4 lbs. He's always been 32 lb, he was the biggest in his litter. But he acted the same playful ,ate normal. -
B with diabetes
My 11 yr old basenji Jaberi has been diagnosed with diabetes. I had taken him to a vet in Stockton for health certificate to fly. I thought while I'm here I'll get his senior check up. They drew blood a couple of days later vet calls says everything is fine Cholesterol was slightly elevated. Nothing to worry about that was in May. I moved to Houston in mid June and because of temperatures being above 86 I couldn't fly him. I finally had to have a service that transports animal bring. Long story short it about a month before I got him back. He was so skinny I cried I thought somebody was not feeding him. My son assured me he was well taken care of. So I thought maybe he was stressed out he's never away from me this long. Well took him to a vet out her. She got his records his blood sugar was 400 back in May. I have to give him 2 shots a day and he now getting cataracts.
Does anyone experience this or have any advice? He has never been sick ever in 11 yrs. -
RE: Silent Basenji
Mine 10 yr old male doesn’t make very little noise. Never yodels but if he’s anxious he make
a kinda growling/talking sound. If other people are around they stare at him. I tell they he’s just expressing himself. -
RE: flying Basenji
I have flown mine 3 times. Once when he was 4
Honolulu to San Francisco 5 hr flight when we moved. Once San Francisco to Houston with stop over Dallas then fly back 2 months later. He hated each time hated it & let you know it. You can’t sedate them or airline will not fly them. Also airline makes you get health check from vet that has been done within 3 days of travel.
Next time I’ll drive -

RE: Aloha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aloha Patty ,
Jaberi means Brave .You do not see many Basenji's in Hawaii & if you do you end up talking forever to the owners cause they are as surprised as you are. But Jaberi so loved the heat/sun, but was not too crazy about the beach. We would have bring him an umbrella & a mat to lay on, and Hawaii Kai dog park in O'ahu is the best.

RE: Aloha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could find some basenji's around here. I have been looking to know avail, even a decent dog park. The couple I found here in San Jose some very aggressive dog behavior. Also Jaberi does have some issues with bulldogs, pitbulls, boxers I don't know if it is the ALPHA thing going on or what. I am also looking into another B do you know of any good breeders in the area??? I would love a Tri.........

Aloha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aloha ,
We have been living in O'ahu for the last 9 yrs. Jaberi was born in Kula, Maui he is 4 yrs old, red/white , he is a total island boy ( loves the heat), his favorite thing was chasing the B52's aka flying roaches, but hates the ocean & water of any kind,. We moved back in Nov & all of us have not gotten used to the "cold" here.Jaberi's breeder is Nancy Greenwell, his grandfather is Kazor Motumbo has won several Best in Shows in Hawaii.
I love when you meet up with another B owner they just get what you're talking about. Sharing stories is such fun. I have only run into a couple of B's at the dog park we would go to in Hawaii Kai . But its like they part the way to get to each other.
Can anyone give me any names of some dog parks in the Bay Area? I have gone to a few, but so small not much running space.
Again mahalo,
Suzanne, Sam & Jaberi

RE: Protein in Urine
@ Ivoss no meds…... When we were getting his health exam to leave Hawaii Vet found he had cracked a tooth. So in the process of doing blood work for surgery, the Vet requested a urine sample where they found the protein level to 1.019 . The Vet wanted me to put him on Science Diet but he does not do well with grains. So I give him Blue Senior way less protein. Jaberi acts very health, looks good. Has never been sick. So I am confused.
@ Pat thank you so much I am going to wait for the blood results & if the results are not good. I will give Dr. Hamilton a call. Has anyone tried the natural kidney health vitamins... I think Nu Pet Plus????
I hate that Jaberi could be sick that is my boy, we love him so much......................Mahalo for your replies.

RE: Protein in Urine
Thank you, since we are new here in Northern San Jose do you have any vets or know of any vets that specialize in Basenjis. I have also heard about homopathic methods regarding kidney/bladder health do you have any knowledge or experience with these methods.

Protein in Urine
Aloha,
When I left Hawaii in Nov 2011 I had Jaberi, 4 yr Basenji Health check at the time the vet discoverd protein in his urine 1.019. Vet advised changed food to Science Diet for Kidney diet. Jaberi has sensitivity to grains so gave him Blue dry for Senior protein is 12 %. whatch what kind of treats I give him. Just took him to vet yesterday had urine tested and now its 3.0. Vet said it could be the radically weather change, flying but that was like 5 months ago. My question is has anyone had an expreience with anything like this? Any suggestions? I am having a full blood work up done next week. He has been checked for Falconi negative so were both his parents.
Mahalo for any help,
Suzanne
