RE: New to the Forum from Bucks County, PA
Hi, Deborah! I am very surprised that no one has yet answered you….I am so sorry that you lost your first B - but what a life you must have given him to live to 17! It is very difficult if you can't refer back to your breeder. I applaud you for rescuing her from a Pet Shop. Some people will not. I am sure (with a B that lived to 17) you are aware of health issues that can affect our dogs and have had all possible ones checked. I am not nearly as knowledgeable as some on here, but I would suggest bringing the crate back and making it a pleasant place..give her stuffed animals in her crate that she can disembowel happily, feed her and/or give her treats in there. This gives you options for using it for 'time outs' when her behaviour gets too much....sorry, it's very late in UK. Talk tomorrow, welcome and piccies, please!

RE: What is that - oh, I know, it's a …..
I live in Cheltenham and it is amazing how many people in this area are sons and daughters ( or grandsons and granddaughters) of Colonials…just yesterday, a lady stopped me and said "Is that a real Basenji?" When I confirmed it, she said..."I grew up with them! Seeing one brings back so many memories". I wish you could all have heard that so....she then hurried away...I shall hope to see her again and talk...

RE: Can't See me!
Butu immediately destroys his pose if he sees me with a camera (anyone else, and it's "ready for my close up now…")

RE: Teaching your basenji puppy the rules
Other dogs play with a stick or a ball, a B plays with his/her human's head.
II do know what you mean, but I had a horrible thought of Butu as a sort of canine Madame Desfarge sitting at the foot of the guillotine….

RE: Ocean here awaiting the arrival of a new boy Zell.
That is a very pretty pup!

RE: How to teach your basenji puppy her name
Butu loves Orijen treats (the kibble, not so much…) I wish I could get away with Kibble as a treat...Butu gives me a very clear "That's not a treat - that's Food" look....

RE: Got awkward puppy photos?
Butu is a boy…and I love it too - you can tell he is thinking "She's an Idiot, but why Involve Me?"

RE: Got awkward puppy photos?
The BRAT FB page had a Very Silly thread about Bs and tin hats…not a Happy Bunny...

If this was a contest I think the winner would have to be the poinsettia - an easy mistake to make…

RE: Welcoming Tiki to our family
They are indeed. He is so cute and Hana, (not to leave her out!) is a lovely girl with beautiful eyes!

RE: Basenji mix and martingale collar
My boy is a real escape artist, and I mean real - Julius K9, loads that people have recommended as being for 'Houdini dogs'. He also chews through leashes, including a beautiful, very expensive leather and brass….which he neatly chewed into 8 inch lengths when I was foolish enough to leave it below 6 feet up....the only thing I trust my boy to be tethered in is his current harness - a Ruffwear Webmaster. For walking, yes, a martingale (and oddly enough, Butu has never worked the trick when slack), but I'd definitely not trust him tethered. I'd get him one of these, and probably a chain and trust him in an open stall where he can see you and you can chat....I'd make the chain long enough that he could stand in the entrance, but could go inside the stall if he wants a sleep, drink, food from his bowls....do not let him near tack, horses feeding stuff, horse's anything - and I'd be cautious about hay too.... Chealsie508 - have you tried these (Ruffwear Webmaster?) If this hadn't worked I was going for a Ruffwear Doubleback, which costs a serious amount of money (but when I think of the number of useless harnesses I've bought..) but is the nearest thing I've seen to a doggie straitjacket - it's used by those people who drag labradors rock climbing....

That's very nice - I might make one similar for the UK…Oh, I forgot Shiba - yes, slightly more reasonable than an Akita (but not much...) The funniest Akita one was at a show where they had a massive Akita Rescue...the girls were a bit sceptical that anyone could make that mistake, but yup, someone did whilst Butu was standing next to a fine shaggy grey and white example!

What is that - oh, I know, it's a …..
Looking at the thread about what people think about Basenjis - what has your Basenji been identified as?
Butu has been confidently identified as:
A long-legged Jack Russell with a curly tail….
A Husky(!)
A Jack Russell cross more times than I can remember.....and my favourite....
An Akita (twice!) My reply? "Only if it shrank in the wash...."
