RE: Something's wrong with my baby :( Crooked toes, bony mass
We got the biopsy results back. It is Calcinosis circumscripta. He's going to be fine and doesn't need any treatment. He got his stitches out Thursday and he's now back to normal

RE: Something's wrong with my baby :( Crooked toes, bony mass
Took him today for his bone biopsy and they amputated one of his toes for biopsy. They put him under sedation and he's whimpering and drooling…I feel so bad for him

Something's wrong with my baby :( Crooked toes, bony mass
So back in May (I think May), Bronson was limping, so I took him to the vet. Since we live in an area with a lot of ticks and a few were found on him before, the vet tested him for Lyme's disease. The test came back negative but the vet said it was probably a false negative and treated him with antibiotics like it was Lyme's. This seemed to help and he was better within a week, but his toes somehow became crooked between May and now. Now, one day last week, he woke up limping and his front leg near the joint has been swollen and hard for a few days, so we took him to the vet. The vet took X-Rays and they said that there was bone loss and the swelling was a calcium deposit, but they had no idea what it could be from, so they sent us to another animal hospital close by. The other animal hospital took more X-Rays from all angles on all four legs and paws, and they told us that his toes are luxated and that they are completely separated from the joints. These vets said that they also have never ever seen this before. They did an ultrasound and ran a bunch of tests. They said all of his organs are clear (apparently they see bony masses in dogs with liver or lung tumors). His bloodwork came back normal except for slightly elevated white blood cell counts. We also did and entire tick panel and the results came back on Thursday. It showed that he had been exposed to a tick, but really didn't show anything else. Eight hours later, when we left the vets, they gave us three medications, an anti-inflammatory, an antibiotic, and pain medications. Bronson seems to have a lot of energy and he isn't limping anymore (he wasn't even limping on the leg that has the mass) and he doesn't seem to be in pain, either. He doesn't eat much, though. If you put a steak in front of him, he'll eat it, but he refuses to eat his food unless I mix beef in it. He'll also eat treats, so I think that he's just picky. I think he may have rheumatoid arthritis or something, but I have no idea (he's also only nine months old). I hope he doesn't have bone cancer… Has anyone ever heard of this before?

RE: Basenjis & water
Bronson loves baths (that was pretty surprising) but also will NOT go out if the ground is wet. If I take him out, he'll just stand in one place whimpering until I take him in.

RE: Need help naming!
I still don't have a name! He comes home with me next Sunday. I just got back from visiting the puppies at the breeder's house but no names have come to me.

RE: Can't wait!
Chris Maxka from Sundiata Basenjis. The dam of the litter that is one week old is Ch. Sundiata's Taffanel and the one that's due next week is Ch. Sundiata's Piccolo. I don't know who the studs are.

RE: Can't wait!
My breeder had a litter and is planning to have another one next week. The pups are almost two weeks old and I can take one home at nine weeks. I am so excited!

RE: Can't wait!
It is a huge responsibility, because you have to know when you move from your parents, finding a place that allows dogs is harder than it used to be.
You are lucky to find a breeder willing to place a pup with someone still living at home. My rule was no one who hadn't finished college (though 2 were in vet school and one vet tech, but all in their mid 20s and own apartments/homes).
That said, my best owner ever was only 17, graduating high school in a few months. She had worked for my vet since she was 14 and on my vet's recommendation I allowed her to take the pic puppy from my very first litter. 21 yrs later, she is one of my best and dearest friends and went from co-breeder to own her own, dogs at Westminster and other invitationals.
What is funny is it wasn't til about 8 yrs later that her dad (her parents are also good friends now lol) let me know Brenda LIED TO ME about them saying she could get it. In fact he told her if she got a Rottweiler they would kick her out. She told him she guessed she'd be sleeping in her car or living at Shirley's then (the vet). ROFLMAO, they have had 3 of the line on their own over the years, btw. They more than came around.
So trust me, I know there are exceptions. You just have to keep in mind that changes in your life are coming–- new education or jobs, moving, family/kids and this pup will be there for all of it... you have to have a game plan.
Thank you, but I'm much younger than you think I am. I'll be living at home for a while

RE: Can't wait!
When u get ur pup and ur ready we should meet up and have a Basenji play date. I live in northern NJ btw.
I don't get my puppy until winter, but that would be awesome!

RE: Can't wait!
You might look for a Basenji meetup. If New York City is convenient you can visit our monthly (except for winter) sessions. See us at http://www.meetup.com/basenji-5/
We frequently have visitors without their own Bs. My wife and I learned about our breeder from a visit a few years ago.
I joined! Don't think I'll be able to make the August meet-up though.

RE: Can't wait!
Stash- yes, I've been buying things too. And all I do on the Internet is watch dog videos and look up pictures
and stuff. I'm just sooo excited -
RE: Can't wait!
I also had to convince my parents, but it was worse because of my dad's dog allergies. When we visited the breeder, they didn't bother him. I'll try to find a dog show soon. Thanks for the idea

RE: Can't wait!
Yes, the breeder lives close by. I visited about a month ago and I'm pretty sure I need to again. I don't know if I can wait!!!!! You are so lucky it was only a week for you.

Can't wait!
I will be getting a basenji this winter and I JUST CAN'T WAIT. It's all I think about. I read dog books and sometimes I can stare at a basenji picture for hours straight. You could say I'm obsessed! hahaha Any ideas to get my mind off it?

RE: Need help naming!
I am getting my puppy from Sundiata Basenjis. I'm not sure if they have litter themes. I don't care if the call name has anything to do with the registered name.

Need help naming!
I'm getting my first basenji puppy in a few months and I'm trying to think of a name for him. It's down to three names now. Since basenjis come from Congo, and the capital of Congo is Brazzaville, one of the names is Braz. The others, Kongo and Dio are just common African surnames. I think I like Braz What do you think?
