be forewarned with collars-domestic dog puppies will get tangled up with an attached leash or rope and struggle but will 'give up' and wait for rescue. basenjis are more adult dog like and well fight until they hang themselves or escape

if you have a few of them they will efficiently[and fairly quietly] run neighborhood cats up trees when everyone is inside after dinner so the pack/chase instinct is there.big cats- you would be advised to follow closely with horses as self preservation in the face of quickly untreed cats bears or wild hogs might be a learned skill.

get a recording from the breeder of the dogs in his kennel when they are all crated up and talking to each other-play that while you are 'out'. a little young for a basenji to 'leave home'?

if you watch littermates teach each other the limits of ;social biting' immediate loud noise seems to be the signal from the bitten for 'too much' which you can approximate with an unpleasantly loud noise maker or shout

you could try getting a tape recording from the breeder of the kennel sounds -all the animals in their crates safe and sound..and play it as 'mood music' while you are gone

@zande poisoning vs the discovery of a new disease favors poison. warfarin[rat poison]is no longer the most common 'blood thinner' but it has a distinctive 'coagulation panel' the rest are prescription medications. this sounds like multiple exposures.

try this -species identification occurs in the week after the eyes open and being nuzzled by the bitch may have been missing. substitute your face several times per day nose rub and breath on its face eye to eye the reflex nose lick may still be present it will go away when the fixation period is over- fixed for life... why is this dog humping my leg? domestic dogs do not develop on a normal mammal time scale and this period may get extended into puppyhood[neotenic behavior] in these wolves. basenjis develop 'normally 'like other canids. barking for instance is a normal canid puppy behavior and basenjis do it too until they are 'too old'. long distance calling [yodeling] is heard in adult wolves in the wild usually at dawn and dusk.
