  • Southern Hemisphere Basenjis

Central Africa is near the equator,, so seasons are pretty moot there and basenjis haven't been out of Africa for all that long. They seem to adapt as quickly as horses do to the new schedule of seasons no matter which direction, north or south, they head.

I wounded if my Daisy is of SH origin since her coat is much thicker now in May than it was in January. Thabo definitely NH since he's in thin summer coat and gets very fluffy by December.

Was wondering if Southern Hemisphere basenjis are generally born 6 months after their northern cousins. Got to wondering about this as the northern hemisphere Thoroughbred horse breeding season winds down.

A puppy is not en engagement prop, it is 15 year commitment which is longer than most marriages.

Get a stuffed toy basenji instead. These are just $30

Thanks! I checked out the Dog Boys Dog Ranch, and it looked okay, but at $73/night, +$20/dog "analysis", and required turnout with strange playmates bas convinced me just to shell out for a hotel room. Sigh…. One grumpy Gus + relatives who ban dogs from the house (and not for health reasons) makes holiday travel annoying.

  • Wanted younger female in Eastern New Mexico/West Texas Panhandle

They have bought into an as yet unproven theory of early detection of the disease. They also provide very little information as to costs of adoption, and list the dogs under a personal Facebook account. As an accountant who has worked closely with tax-exempt organizations for over 15 years, I have serious issues with a web site soliciting "donations" which not only hasn't received even preliminary 501©(3) recognition, but also fails to provide information on the organization's board and intermixes personal with the charity.

I would not recommend an out of state rescue, especially with adoptable dogs nearby. My question would be why a young female? Is the intent to produce puppies?

Am planning on going to my "no dog in the house" sister's home for Xmas but not sure what to do with Thabo and Daisy (new rescue). Both are rate trained, but Thabo gets grumpy if confined all day. Daisy will cry if left alone so have some issues. May just have to make this a day trip.

So the fact that dogs are pack animals is a human invention? Has to be one of the silliest comments I have heard. Sure, not every dog s going to get along with every other dog, but lets not pretend dogs wanting dog buddies is a human construct. If anything, dogs NOT having dog buddies is the human invention.

  • Protective Basenjis?

Thabo showed last week what he would do. We were on a road trip and stayed overnight at a motel. The folks on the floor were part of a wedding party, and they were coming & going until the wee hours. Several times, Thabo woe me up growling at the door. But when he saw I was awake and on guard, e curled up in the bed and went right to sleep. So if I'm there, he'd save himself.

I don't see the need to disparage BART in this discussion. They provide information to adopters about Fanconi and whether the dog has had the DNA linkage test.

The language on the Camp Basenji site isn't clear that all the dogs are DNA tested, since it says "If Fanconi is identified very early in the disease process, just when bicarbs are starting to be lost, prior to spilling glucose (the true start to the disease process as we know it now), the disease will have VERY little impact on the overall health of the basenji as long as supplements are begun immediately. We think basenjis affected with Fanconi deserve a safe and healthy life, so we will make sure that all of our basenjis are tested for Fanconi by DNA testing and/or venous blood gas testing as appropriate. We can then make sure that any with Fanconi are placed in homes that will have the vetting resources available."

The "true start" of the disease is still unknown, but the direct linkage DNA test shows whether the dog is at risk at all. I get the impression more weight is being given to blood gases.

Thabo is fascinated with horses, though he prefers to have a fence between himself and the equine. He has sniffed noses with one, and later the two of them stayed near the fence and looked closely at each other.

  • DHPPC vaccinations
    L Lmaris
    10 Oct 2012, 15:53

    @LindaH:

Also, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) now recommends vaccinations no more often than every 3 years after the initial round of puppy shots. Here's a link to their 2011 Guidelines: https://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocuments/CanineVaccineGuidelines.pdf

You are partially correct. The recommendations are every 3years for core diseases IF the puppy achieved full immunity, there are not underlying health issues, the vaccines are modified live or attenuated viruses ( not killed as many are) and state laws allow. In many cases, these are not met and advising a blanket "no more frequently than 3 years" will lead to animal death.

The media, celebrities, and the ignorant/gullible public have bought into the "unreasonable danger" myth of vaccines which has led to resurgence of previously rare diseases resulting in unnecessary deaths of both animals and humans.

"Meets all of the AKC breed standards" based on whose judgement? That is what breed shows are about. He should have some credentials of his own, not his ancestors. Has he at least been tested for Fanconi clear? Hips cleared by the OFA?

And how much exercise is he getting when you are home? Even the best crate-acclimated dog may become destructive if not allowed and encouraged to deplete his energy in more constructive pursuits.

I must confess my own basenji has decreased his destruction since neighbors on either side got puppies. They keep each other occupied for hours.

  • Shedding and Odors

Thank you DebraDownSouth for dispelling the "hypoallergenic" myth.

I am allergic to dogs but react less to Thabo than most dogs. He has virtually no odor even though he's not had a full bath in the nearly 7 months I've had him. He's in the middle of a molt, shedding profusely. Unlike some basenjis I've known, he's got some fairly long hairs on his neck & withers.

I got this for Thabo. It is more water resistant & isn't rubbery, but is so adjustable and straps elastic for comfort. His back is 16" but the 18" fits him perfectly. At his price I'm getting some fuzzy ones too. Very good customer service from Leanne when their site had a glitch.

  • Doh… vet said she needs to lose about a pound

A dog of most breeds would have to be seriously overweight for loose skin to dissappear, and losing weight would only make it looser.

A better guage is to run your finger over the rib cage. If you have to push in more than a very slight pressure to feel the ribs, the dog is carrying extra weight. Tuck from the side should be visible, but also from above when standing. A seated or curled up dog will look like it has a thicker waist than a standing one just like we do

She looks fine to me. Very happy too.

  • Good chew stuff for sensitive intestines?
    L Lmaris
    22 Sept 2012, 02:56

Bully sticks are just baked rawhide. Antlers are tougher and the mniscule amounts of antler that can be chewed up in a day shouldn't rile up a sensitve tummy.

Have you tried "moo tubes"? They're bovine trachea and more digestible than skin, whether in rawhide or bully stick form.

As with any dog toy, check ountry of origin and avoid non-domestc produced.

  • Umbilical hernia

    16 Sept 2012, 19:12

    @nomrbddgs:

Since it appeared later on, and is hard, and red, I would suggest getting it fixed. Most of the umbilical hernias I have come across are pink and soft-no matter the size. I find it highly unusual, and I don't mean to scare you, that it is hard and red. I would get it fixed asap. Just my opinion.

I agree that the presentation is more likely indicative of strangulation, and the appearance beyond infancy is additional evidence of a problem. I too would get it fixed asap and forget about acking on another procedure to save costs. A dog with strangulated bowel doesn't need additional stress.

  • Flea & Tick Products

Herbal or natural does NOT mean safer. Since ther is rarely any double blind testing on "natural" products and no standardization of ingredients and no independent testing to see if claimed quantity of active ingredient is present, using these products is at least as dangerous as the effective pharmaceutical products.
