I have a basenji thats a little over a year old and there is something that I still haven't figured out. She keeps having accidents in the house when I leave the place and no one else is home (or if anyone leaves her a lone in the place for any period of time).
For instance, I just took her out in the morning and then a couple hours later I got to throw the trash out and she pee'd in the house after I left. Why does she keep having accidents when someone leaves her for a little while in the house?
Its a little annoying to crate her every time I have to step outside…
So my 6months old is in heat right now and I've noticed that she howls in the crate but only when I leave the apartment. Shes always been fine in the crate. The crate is always open in the living room and she likes to go in there and sleep during the day. During night, she sleeps fine in the living room and doesn't howl or anything but only does this when I leave my apt. Is this because of her just in heat right now?
So I had a appt to get my B (6 months) spayed and she went into heat last Friday night. Called my vet and she said it was ok to spay her during heat (and she is a really good vet, not some joe schome) but I've heard otherwise, that you should wait after she is done with heat. What do you guys think?
roommate has another dog, but he just got back to the apt an hour ago…she's been at my parents house with me since last tuesday-friday...I took her on a walk around the neighborhood yesterday but there isn't any tall grass around...some bushes and stuff but thats about it....I did wash her bedding and vacuumed the place today as well...
yeah…that was about 2.5 weeks ago, I'm guessing shes about 9-10lbs now?...I just put some frontline on her this morning as i haven't done that in a while so I'm guessing thats the case as you stated? Also, should I wash her bedding and stuff too? What should I clean / sanitize in my apt? And should i give her benedryl to help with the bites?
I looked for fleas but I didn't really see anything...unless I'm just not looking hard enough or if htey are hard to spot..
My 16 weeks old b has started to have small little bumps appear on her skin…I saw some the other day on her right thigh and now I see them on her forehead, belly, and sides...doesn't look like its bothering her as shes not itching at them and her behavior is normal in all aspects....is this some kind of allergy?
I switch her food up and recently I haven't fed her the venison formula in a couple weeks and gave it to her for two meals last night....could it be that?
so I went with the variation advice and have had great results so far….now, right now I'm just doing it between freeze dried and freezer, but may think about slowly mixing in kibble and then putting that in the variation too. I have a bag of taste of the wild (which she really liked) so I guess we'll see how it goes!
Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc…
When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command.
She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys.
Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE!
Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing
let me add some more context on this…so my parents are very religious and vegetarian due to their beliefs. My mom doesn't like any meet products in the fridge, so its difficult to bring the freezer stuff when I take her to my parents place. Hence, the freeze dried question
So I've had my puppy on a raw food diet the past 3 weeks and she doing really really well with it…much better than how she was doing on kibble it seems like. She also enjoys it much more as well which is nice because sometimes with the kibble, she wouldn't eat all the food.
Right now she is on Instinct Raw freezer food but I also have some freeze dried raw food from Primal Pet. My question is, switching back from freeze dried to freezer dried (same base though, chicken), do you think that will cause her stomach to be upset like it does when switching different types of kibble?
I'm going to be traveling for work for 3 days next week and need someone to help take care of her…I can bring her to the hotel but I would only be able to come back during lunch during the work day...I called one place (recommended by my vet)...and they said she gets 3 walks about 15-20min long but other than that...she'll be in a kennel...is it good for her to be in a kennel for long periods of time? She's only 13 weeks
ok..so just to update on this….I'm now feeding her 1.75 cups per day....I feed her eukunaba excel (corn free, is that the same as grain free?) and I mix it with a little bit of Vital...I give her .75 cups in the morning..... .25 in the afternoon...and then .75 in the evening....she was at the vet the other week and she said she looked great but i could up her food if I wanted to a little, so i added .25 cups to make it 1.75 a day. You can kinda of see her ribs a little (very very slightly) so that was the reason...
i did get some bitter apple…the thing works like a charm! I got her some toys as well and she does so much better now with knowing what to chew and what not to! its like night and day from 2-3 weeks ago....I rarely have to redirect her now...I tell you, these B's are smart!
