I was wondering the same thing...and a friend of mine said her whippet has the same thing and it has to do with speed and fast direction changing...

RE: Home made food feeding
I suggest you see a vet just in case it is not parasitic or other reason, and I strongly recommend home made food. No one can tell me that fresh horse meat, organs, bones and veggies are not balanced, but dehydrated horse meat (hopefully) and starch are.
It depends on you, how dedicated you are on preparing good, balanced home made meals.
My B eats home made food. Meat, organs, bones I give raw, and I cook veggies and anchvies(or sardines). Once a year he gets probiotics and minerals (usually in April). Since feeding home made, he doesn’t react to grass (he used to have rash), no anal gland issues, no urinary infections, his coat is shiny, blood work is great.
That is my experience.
Buy books about home diets, do your research and remember not to overdo with the proteins. -
RE: Introduce a cat to 2 adult basenjis
The dogs are a pack. Playing with a cat can soon become something more. I would never leave them alone. If a cat starts running, they will chase it and will try a little bite (looks like play, but I wouldn’t bet on it). Take good care. I have one and a cat that was adult when the dog came and still the dog is sometimes ruff

RE: Advice / help on mysterious health problems.
Hi....so, I am no vet, but a friend had some similar issues with her dog, and the dog had portosystemic shunt. This is a lucky guess, you need to listen to your vet or get a second vetenerian opinion.
But I agree with you, you have to be careful not to put her under some treatment that is uncomfortable to her, or more aggresive than the disease.
I hope you will come to the bottom of this, and If She is ok and functional, try some natural remedies too (it can’t hurt).Sending you get well wishes

RE: Looking for basenji
Hi,
There are a lot breeders in Europe, you can start with eurobreeder.com web page, there is a list of breeders (you can search by breed).
If you still can not decide, I can help, Depends on what kind of dog you are looking for. -
RE: Crate/seperation axiety- help!
Sorry to hear that, but She needs time to adjust and crating is not helping.
I never crated my dogs and they never distroyed anything.
My advise is to work with her more, obedience, longer walks...so She doesn’t feel neglected and let her find her own safe place.I wouldn’t give her medications, just time.
Close those rooms with fancy furniture and leave her somewhere your smell is, bedroom maybe?
Panting and saliva pools means a lot of stress, so get her out of the crate If she is not used to it, dont give her prozac.
You need time, mental and phisical stimulations and lots of love

RE: Vomiting white foam
If it happened only twice and never again, don’t be alarmed. Maybe he ate something that upset his tummy (beside his meals).
Does he has a reflux and swallows his saliva often?
If not, monitor his behaviour, divide his meals in small portions and give them more often...Oh, and add water to his meals, specially If he eats dry food because they are known as poor drinkers.

RE: Bathing
Once a year, during warm months.. Wet dog wipes are enough most of the time. Mine hates bath time...screams in the tub

RE: Stop giving food if basenji seem like he is getting used to crate?
I never crated Fred, or any of my dogs so I don’t have any experience...but If you have something that’s working, continue with it.

RE: Basenji Won’t eat
My basenji had similar periods, when in puberty... I learned he was eating too much protein. We switched to raw, I have cut his portions and he is eating regulary.
He will eat anything when with other dogs, that doesn’t mean he likes it, he just doesn’t want other dogs to eat it.
Relax, offer him food after walking. Get him tired, come home and give him food. If he doesn’t want it, pick it up.
I prefer raw food, but that doesn’t mean That’s your only option. My problems are gone since on raw. Do your research and find food he likes. Wach for proteins, If you feed kibble, up to 24% of protein is enough. -
RE: Bowel movements
It’s just a spot thing his bowel movement is ok...
He has to pick a spot where no dogs are near, where there is a certain breeze...just kidding. He is picky, nothing else. Thank you -
RE: Bowel movements
Wow, I always had the opposite problems. My basenji doesn’t want to do the number two...he has to go, but it takes a while till he finds that special place to do it.
Maybe the food is no good for his digestion? You can try with probiotic to make his bowels healthier. Nusentia has great probiotic for dogs.
It could be parasites, when did you gave him something against parasites?
My dog does number two once, or twice daily - since on barf. I ground pumpkin seeds to clean him of parasites and I give him anti parasitic pill two times a year (He is in the stable a lot around horses and eats horse poo, so twice a year seems ok).
Clean parasites and give him probiotic. You will see the difference in two weeks, if not - go to the vet -
RE: Help with Basenji Database
Thanks for the heads up, but the breeder did that. All respectable breeders do that, dont they?
-
RE: Help with getting started.
Rare...you will have to wait, like the rest of us
But you can try adopt on BRAT ( basenji rescue and transport).
Its only few months of waiting...and you can get to know the breed a bit more. Trust me, you will be discovering the breed for years as your pup matures -
RE: Growling at dogs during walk
My experience is - go to the dog park more often.
Fred had those phases and still has them every spring. He growls and is acting dominant. When we enter in the dog park, first few minutes I am yelling NO! And them he relaxes and start playing.
I would recomend more dog encounters off leash -but Fred is very playful and he is not aggresive, so that works for him. He is not biting, just growling hard. -
RE: Fanconi Syndrome
Sorry to hear that....and I have to say that I am furious because people dont test their dogs...its not expensive and its once in a lifetime (I know, puppy mills people dont care )...
When Fred had to take pills for his UTI, it was the same, he stopped eating. So i make a powder od of the pills, put some water and into syringe. Opened his mouth, injected it into his mouth and That’s that. After - a treat. And I did it in the way ot wasnt attached with food or walk. After a while, he stopped making tantrums, he just sat and let me do my thing...
