New addition from Duchess's Mom. Yesterday my two B's were doing the Basenji 500 and did a body slam or some such in the bathroom and knocked a hole in the wall at least 10" big. I was shocked. First time ever, I've known that 'run' to cause any damage.

RE: The Worst thing your dog ruined!!!
Where does the list begin and end with my B's. Most expensive was my hearing aid, several pair of glasses (including the first half hour of a visit from an old friend) Lost count of the remotes we've replaced. Shoes, and bras number to countless.
I thought I was a good housekeeper, then thought I was a more careful one. After 3 years with B's. I resort to anti-depressants, and prayer. LOL Thankfully more lately, things are rather normal. I can put toilet tissue on the roller again, and torn up napkins or such is the only casualties.hAVING MEMORIES of TWO B's FOR 15 AND 17 YEARS previous to these, kept me from slashing my wrist. Love those B's.

You have two beautiful family members. You will also enjoy getting on this b site.

Dew C;aws
Just recently I was told by a B owner that dew claws should be removed when puppies are just a few days old.
Both my B's are AKC registered and they both have their dew claws.Any input on that??????

RE: 2Bs vs 1B - How Much Different w/Multiples
This is my second time around with Basenji's. My first two were one female (spayed) and a male (Liter mates). My female lived 15 years and the male, 17 years. I got them at the same time, so don't have the expeirence of adding one that time. I was always convinced they lived long healthy lives because they had each other.
Ten years later, I acquired my female. When she was 1 1/2, we decided to add one more, and this time also a male. (Chosen for his domestic qualities and championship line. As I said before. Only a few minor problems adding the second one The female has always been just crazy about him, and they are ideal companions.

RE: 2Bs vs 1B - How Much Different w/Multiples
About six months ago, I added the second basenji to our household. Like you, I got on this site and ask opinions of 1 vs 2. Our gal was about 1 1/2 when we got our male, who was six months old.
It really worked out great in our case. Duchess was demanding an enornmous amount of attention, and now she and Ramses really enjoy having each other. They eat together-no problem, play together and share a huge crate at night time. Occasionly they get into a short ruckus over sleeping space, but a quick reprimand usually ends that.
As for walking. I do use two leads at times, but usually use a split lead that works quite well. Ramses had never been on a lead, or even inside a house, so he adapted wonderfully. I expected lots of problems but had very few. So I am very glad I decided to add the second one. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. -
RE: Tail colors
I got out Ramses's paperwork, and two generations back on one side, it listed a black and white grandparent. All the others were red and white's..So those few black hairs on the tail were an interesting throw back to the black and white. Thanks for all the replies.

RE: History of Bs as hunters
Being from Florida, I've been to the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. They have art all through that. They have several large paintings depicting Basenji's taking down water buffalo by attacking in packs, and ripping out it's underbelly area'. So someone somewhere heard about that method of hunting in the wild.

RE: Tail colors
Thanks for the reply. I am assuming the tri color gene must be in Ramses line also. I saw both parents and all the litter, and they were all red and white, yet all the pups had the black hairs on the inside curl of the tail. So I guess he isn't the only one.

Tail colors
HI. I have two red and white's. My male has just a few black hairs along the upper side of the curl of his tail. Just curious if any other with red and white's have this?????
Happy, safe, weekend to you all.

RE: Life Expectancy??
How old is your basenji?
I have found varying ages for the average life expectancy of Basenjis - anywhere from 8 to 16 years. While it's not the happiest topic, what experience have you forum readers had?
(Please forgive me if this has been covered somewhere else in the forums. I did a search, but couldn't find anything related.)
Thanks
My last pair of B's–-my female lived to be 15, and my male live to be 17. Both died from old age. If the two I have now live that long, they will probably outlive me.

RE: Added a new B to our household
Congratulations-looks like they've just finished playing!
Do they ever finish (?). At this moment they are running the Indy 500. I just love it. I get a lot of rest with them to exercise each other. Only takes about a third of the time to pick up the messes. Ha ha.

RE: Okay, deep growling..when moving Tobias?
Thank you and the others for all the input. I must be dense. I didn't consider the 'alpha' root for the problem. I was thinking it must have been a result of some kind of treatment from the previous owner.
So thank you all again.

Added a new B to our household
We have added a male companion for Duchess to our home. We have named him Ramses. He is eight months old and of course a sweetie. Duchess is so pleased to have a friend to romp and chase with. We are glad we made the decision. Getting one this old with out housetraining or potty training was a tough decision. His gentle loving ways make up for the weeks of training.
Will try to attach a photo. But I don't have much luck on here with that.
The one with the green color is Ramses

RE: Okay, deep growling..when moving Tobias?
My new b (7 months old) growls very threatenly like yours. Also like yours, I don't press the issue. I do try petting, soft talk, and then try again, but usually let it go for awhile and try again. Sometimes in a couple hours I can get him moved from my bed to the crate, and other times he spends the night in my my bed.
I haven't been bitten yet, but he has me convinced he would. We've only had him a few weeks, and hoping to over come it. My girl, Duchess, has NEVER growled in way with us.
You seem to be the only response on here that gets a convincing growling like I do. I have often read that some B's wake up grouchy, but this happens to me if he has just gotten comfortable not even asleep. So, I'm working on the problem hoping to over come it. -
RE: Multiple Dogs vs one
@vstripe:
I have to say it sounds like I am the only person that loves owning one basenji. I think its great I never have to worry about jealousy, quarrels, dividing my time, feeding in separate rooms, fights over treats, training comes easy and so on:) . I also really like the strong bond we have formed with our dog, plus I like how he has developed his own personality. When I go to the dog park and people have multiple B's they roam around in their pack like they have the same brain or something. They seem to have more of a wild feel to them that I dont much care for.
All that being said I admit the thought of one more has crossed my mind but for the time being we love having an only child:DThat's ok, to be Happy with just one. I feel a lot like you with my 'only'. But was just wondering about a playmate…I have really enjoyed all the input on the question. At present, I have to think...just one...but maybe a little down the road. I enjoy getting my emails about the one's up for adpotion. I am sure that would be the way I get another one.

RE: Underwear
I guess we just all have "normal" B's. I have a friend who asks me if I take Valuim to survive…..(The answer is NO.)

RE: Wet Towels
Keoki likes to sit in front of the dryer as I am putting the damp laundry into it and try to "catch" things as they go in. If he misses, he'll try to grab things out of the dryer and run before I can catch him.
They never miss an opportunity, do they?

RE: Wet Towels
Yep! Corky loves my wet towels. If it's hanging on the hamper, he rubs up against it. Neither of my other two (not basenjis) do it. So Funny!!!
I wonder if it has to do with the fact that they like to keep themselves so clean.
I've often wondered that myself. She hates the rain, but loves rubbing on wet towels. Also hangs over the bath tub and licks me while bathing.
