  • So my dog just bit me

    It's all good now,

I took my dog out and we both exercised like crazy, he seems happy with me and I'm definitely happy with him.

    :D

PS: My dog bit me before I hit him, I think he just didn't want to be taken outside. He felt like I was pushing my alpha state on him and because of that he decided to attack.

But yes, you live and learn and this is sure one of those.

I'm pretty sure he knew what he did was wrong, because as soon as I saw him he was acting different, giving me the hint that he had done something wrong.

I believe a dog has some memory and you don't always have to catch him in the act to discipline. That's why after the whole thing happened (he biting, me hitting) he was trying to come close to me in a very submissive way. I'm not a fan of rubbing noses into anything, but the perspective changes depending on the setting. That's why I took him close to where he did his mess and not outside for example.

But yea, crate/porch is going to be the ultimate answer to this. It's to bad because I would love him to be inside the house at all times, guess we can't do that.

Yea, I'm going to have to make him spend more time in the porch (it works like a giant crate so its awesome) I've read a lot about having a dog see you as a leader and I must say I'm pretty sure he sees me as one. He respects my bed, respects my eating time and he has never broken anything inside my room. I believe he sees it as ours, but mostly mine since I can decide when he comes in or not. I can even walk him without the leash and he always follows me. Maybe if he was a really bad dog I wouldn't feel the way I do, I feel like I've invested a lot of time trying to teach this dog manners to have to deal with this.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Thanks,

I already came out of my room and he was acting very submissive and such. Still, disappointed falls short to what I'm feeling right now. Maybe I'm expecting to much from him, he's only 6 months old but he already sits, paws, lays down and drops things from his mouth (that one still working on)

He's a very smart dog, and I'm always making sure I reward his good behavior. I really care about him and I think thats whats making it so hard.

I won't tell you the whole story, but to make it short this morning he destroyed a bunch of stuff inside the house in the 2 hours he spent by him self. Sometimes I leave him in the porch but in the last couple of days he had stayed inside and not broken anything. So anyways after I saw all the wreck he had caused I picked him up from where he was and got him next to the mess he had created and said "you don't do that" (which I'm 100% sure he already knows) Well when I was going to get him to the porch he started growling and complaining and he bit me, it was not a play bite, the cut was deep and it bleed a good deal.

I'm not a fan of physical punishment on dogs but I'm not going to say I didn't do that today. This whole experience I think will forever change my relationship with my dog. I was going to take him to the park today, now he'll be lucky to even get a small walk.

I feel very frustrated, it seems like all the progress he was making before has completely stalled now to the point where he does something knowing its wrong. I know I might catch some heat for hitting my B but I don't think "no bad dog" would have been fit for that. I locked my self in my room because I was so angry and I didn't want to hit the dog more than I felt was proper, but right now I swear I don't even want to look at him.

Eh, not so short after all

EDIT: oops this was meant for basenj talk

Your basenji is 11 weeks old, asking him not to byte is like asking a baby to change his diaper. Be patient with bite inibition, it works. Make sure to get him a lot of toys he can chew on, and again be patient.

My Rocky is almost 5 months now and he's improved a whole lot since we got him. He barely does it anymore and if he does it's usually because it's time for his walk or he wants food.

How did you get an 11wk basenji? I got mine when he was 13 wks and I still thought he was to young.

This all started because of the welcoming people get here which I don't agree with, the rest was total point derailment that I just went with. It's pretty eyeopening to see the expense list Lisa, sorry I even brought the whole profit thing up.

And as far as the mix breeds, I think they are great but it is good to know what traits your dog will have before hand instead of having a big surprise. I had a MB that would escape the fence in my house, follow me to school which was a 30 minute walk, hang around and then come back home. He lived for 13 years. However I was not aware breeders go such long ways to ensure a wide gene pool, I think thats just if not more important than dna tests.

My basenji pulls very often on his leash and I'm afraid he'll hurt him self. I live in a big city and there are way to many distractions for my B to stay focused.

Is it possible to have them walk at your pace and at your side or is he going to need a chest harness?

I know I'm coming off harsh on people who are really nice and trying to do good, it's not what I want to do but I can't help it, the same way is hard if not impossible for people not to feel bad when the whole fanconi thing is told to them.

And tanza, you can disagree that mixed breed dogs are healthier if you want but there are many studies that show that dogs who are not selectively bred are less prone to congenital diseases. You really need to do some research if you don't think a wider gene pool affects an animals health or not.

    @tanza:

Exactly… and the main purpose of responsible breeders is education of the public... and that means keeping the fact that health testing is important.. and puppies that come from puppy mills or BYB's do not test... and how important it is... It is hard to tell someone how heartbreaking it is to wind up with a sick dog that could have been prevented

By that logic no dog who comes from a breeder who test will have a disease. I was reading the thread on the story of the board, Vanessa got a basenji from Khanis Basenjis whose dogs are tested for everything yet she had a very sick dog who eventually passed. I have many friends with dogs and none of them bought them from a show breeder, and those dogs are healthy and quite old.

I wasn't very happy with the way the whole fanconi thing was broken down to me. No one here ever tells you how little have those test been going on for and actually even why they even started testing dogs in the first place. Check out Pedigree Dogs Exposed to see what I'm talking about.

The one thing that is responsible for all of these genetic diseases is selective breeding, and the blame falls on people like us who knowing that a mixed breed dog is usually healthier than a pure pure breed still decide for the pedigree AKC dog. If you don't want to have to worry about a dogs genetics then get a dog with a wider genetic pool, it's not rocket science.

And how curious that everyone "educating" us about all of these diseases are breeders that look to make profit the same way the BYB they bash so much do, the only difference are a couple of genetic test that call a healthy dog "probably clear".

    Give me a break.

Maybe there should be a sticky thread about Fanconi. I do agree people should know about it but it's a little much when you bombard people with questions about it in a forum that supposed to be for introducing your self and your dog, there's already a fanconi forum and it's quite visible why not just let people see it there?

Here are some pics of my boy, he'll be 5 months in 2 weeks. He's been doing great and has improved amazingly in every single aspect of his behavior. The first 2 pics were taken the night we got him, the last 2 were taken yesterday.
