RE: Who has the largest basenji?
Mine is right at 20lbs and I feel he is a little runt. He is already 10 months so I doubt he will be getting any bigger

Do basenjis hate kisses
my baby boy almost looks disgusted when i lean in and try to give him a kiss and he pulls back… i'm the only one that can rough and tumble with him but as soon as i try and be cozy and kiss his face he curls is his lips as if to go "ewww mom, you're embarrassing me"

RE: Basenji bathroom habits
He will only go in a certain patch of tall grass or flowers. Luckily, peeing is not an issue. I'd freak out over the cleaning (Our apartment has carpet tiles)

Basenji bathroom habits
Okay please forgive me and the somewhat gross content of this post.
My B boy (4 months) is the PICKIEST pooper I have ever known. When I am walking him I can see him puckering and even at times see poo on its way out.. but he'll clench until he goes to certain areas. It can be quite frustrating.. especially when we walk him for 30 minutes and nothing comes out. even if we take him to his favorite poop place… even worse is when he is about to poop and something distracts him right as he squats.. like a car horn or a bike rider. all hope is lost then and it's time to go back inside and try again later.
anybody else have Bs that refuse to go unless it's just the right circumstances/places?

I never found one to meet up with but did get a B/W male in the end and couldn't be happier. He's about 15 weeks now.

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
Better to use a real measuring cup, then you know exactly how much you are feeding…. (IMO)... and again I would urge that you give only a certain amount of time to eat and then take it away till the next feeding time. It encourages good eating habits and they will not stave themselves, if they are hungry they will eat... as they say "snooze, you lose"....
Also you will find that when feeding a good quality food your don't need to feed as much as they get more benefit from the higher quality
Thanks I will definitely follow these tips

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
IMO a cup of food is too much…. a puppy his age should be eating about 3 times a day.. and a cup is a lot of food for a puppy?... My puppies at that age eat 1/4 cup 3x's a day. And they get a certain amount of time to eat, if they leave any it is taken away. By leaving it down for them to pick at is setting them up for poor eating habits.
I didn't mean one measuring cup. I meant one little plastic cup

What is your typical day with your B(s)?
We get up at 6:30 and go downstairs for the morning walk which only lasts about 5-10 minutes. Then it's upstairs to eat our breakfasts. One bowl of kibble for him, one bowl of oatmeal for me. Time for MY shower.. which Orion feel he has to be a part of so he patiently waits for me to get out before licking my legs and following me around until I'm allllll dry and dressed. Then it's time for our second walk of the morning. Another 10 minutes or so before momma heads to work and he goes in his kennel. NO whining either. I come home for lunch and take him out then eat lunch and take him out once more. then we don't see each other until 5:30 and I miss him like crazy! Walk, then I prep my dinner and feed him when I sit down to eat. We wrestle and play some before going out for yet another walk. Then it's lazy time in front of the TV. Orion doesn't always agree and wants my full attention. About 9:30-10 we take our final walk and head to bed. In his kennel he goes where he whines for exactly 10 seconds, and we both fall asleep… at about 2:30, I'll wake up and unlock the crate.. 30 minutes later he sneaks in bed with me and I wake up at about 6:30 and repeat!
very routine, and very nice for a mawmaw like me

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
Oh with food I give him about a cup of food in the morning.. and he doesn't eat it all at once. He eats until he is full then walks off. nibbles at it through the morning. I also know that we shouldn't bathe him too often. Like I said.. the only reason he got a bath was because he got explosive doodoo all over himself. lol!
Any ideas on what chew toys to get him. so far we have a tennis ball, a fluffy doggy that doesn't squeak, a puppy kong and a long "stick" with a squeaker in it. His favorite seems to be the ball. I was surprised he didn't like the kong all that much

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
I went to petco yesterday, and looked at the different foods. I think I will be getting him taste of the wild.
And yes he does have a collar on him. I noticed he was pretty darn cold this morning when it was about 50 so I'm looking to get him a litt coat. The BF laughed at me and said I'm being an overly worried momma! haha

Yes, food will cause itching… is it grain free? Many dogs of all breeds have grain allergies, especially any with corn. What was the breeder feeding?
royal canin was what he was being fed.
I picked up a bag of beneful which is what my lab puppy ate when she was younger. she never itched from it, and since it was a brand she used I figured it would be okay..
suggestions for dog food brands?

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
No particular reason other than it was what i picked up at the store before I got him. Going to petco today to pick up some more supplies so I'll see about picking up another small bag of something else so that i can test the food theory out.

RE: Bringing home our B 3/9/2012
I have wet wipes I use for his ears. Maybe I'll just make sure to wipe around his neck/head where he seems to be the itchiest. He got a bath on day one so I don't think he's "dirty".
He is not on the same food. Would that cause itching?
