    • Found R/W male Austin TX with CA tags

I saw this on the Basenji Rescue and Transport Facebook page and the person posted a couple photos of him also.

A Red and White Basenji, named Alvin, was found in Austin, TX, today, Sunday, January 15th. He came up to some people near Lamar and Hwy 183. Do you recognize him? He has a rabies' tag that goes to a clinic in California. Alvin is apparently well-trained and responds to lots of commands. The clinic that first scanned him said the microchip he has was not registered, but the people who have him said they went online and found a nationwide registry, the chip is from Home Again, and the company has left a message with the owner on file, but so far, no response.

    • Recall: River Run and Marksman

Another kibble dog food recalled because of aflatoxin. Corn containing higher-than-acceptable levels of a naturally occurring substance called aflatoxin is in the kibble. They recently discovered their tests were not working as they should and reported it to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The article gives lot numbers and states where the food was distributed.

    • RE: Chicken jerky treats

This story caught my eye because of the reference to Fanconi. A link to the article and a little of what it said:

      http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/21/8885427-chicken-jerky-treats-linked-to-mystery-illnesses-deaths-in-dogs

FDA officials say they have not been able to find a cause for the illnesses. They note that the reports of illness have not conclusively been tied to chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats.

Dog owners and vets are reporting that animals may be stricken with a range of illnesses within days or hours of eating chicken jerky, including kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition characterized by low glucose.

On September 14th, this older female brindle Basenji was found running around in a WinCo parking located at 5110 Montauban Ave. in Stockton. She had no tags, only a flea collar. Please email me at the anonymous craigslist address ASAP if this is your dog. Please tell me the dog's name. I will get back to you ASAP with my contact information. Thank you!

    • RE: Microchip registration

I just got lucky. The woman a got him from called to say she found his collar tag. It's Home Again. The reason I wasn't having any luck looking up his number is because the vet tech wrote the number down wrong. The chip had never been registered though.

Shaye's Mom - That's a good idea about the pound. Not sure how it will work here though. It's hard telling what county my dog would wind up at. My property is right on the county line and within a few miles of another county and to make matters even more complicated every town has a choice of contracting with different counties every year.

      Thank you both!

    • Microchip registration

I am at least my Bs 4th owner. I had him scanned at the vets but they couldn't identify what type of microchip he has. I can't find any registration for it. I tried to enroll it at http://www.akccar.org/ but even if I use the unknown brand it won't enroll it. I'm assuming his breeder or first owner had the chip implanted but the person I got him from no longer had the information about the person she got him from. There was a breeder in our area and I found out who her vet was but the vet said she moved away.

I was thinking about having a new microchip inserted but I've read that when scanning it may automatically default with the first chip found and shelters don't look for a second chip. If that's true and the scanner reads this unregistered chip, the shelter won't know he's mine.

Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions?

He does wear a collar with an ID tag.

My biggest worry is of a huge storm or tornado separating me from my dogs. I had a whole wall of my previous home taken out by a storm a couple years ago. Luckily the one dog that bolted only ran next door.

    • RE: URGENT B mix will be PTS

In Illinois shelters and non-profit rescues are licensed by the Dept of Agriculture and fosters have to get a license through the shelter or non-profit rescue. There is a definition for each of these, Animal Control Facilities, Animal Shelters, Pet Shop Operator, Dog dealer, Cattery or Kennel operator.

As I understand the law, if I choose to personally take in dogs and re-home them, I would be considered a dog dealer even if I give the dogs away. Dog dealers have to be licensed. The law favors back yard breeding and hurts those who want to help dogs. It’s true that I might be able to re-home a dog now and then but the more often I do something like this the more likely someone could decide to stop me. Since any dogs I have need to be licensed a red flag would be raised. Government organizations are looking for more ways to collect revenue and assessing fines is big now. I would then have a criminal record that would hurt my ability to work with shelters. I copied what Illinois law says:

"Dog dealer" means any person who sells, offers to sell, exchange, or offers for adoption with or without charge or donation dogs in this State. However, a person who sells only dogs that he has produced and raised shall not be considered a dog dealer under this Act, and a veterinary hospital or clinic operated by a veterinarian or veterinarians licensed under the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Practice Act of 2004 shall not be considered a dog dealer under this Act.

Another ridiculous section of Illinois law for foster pets states:
“The animals held for adoption shall be segregated from any personally owned pets.”

When I asked a representative from the Illinois Dept of Agriculture “Am I required to keep foster animals in a different area of my home and not allow interaction with my dogs” His reply was “Yes, that is what the law states”

Another part of the law which hurts rescue organizations in Illinois is that foster homes can only foster a total of 4 dogs and cats. It doesn’t matter if you live in a rural area and have 100 acres.

These are all the type of laws the No Kill movement wants to see changed. Animals die because of legislation that's unnecessary.

They are trying to pass a law requiring anyone with 7 or more companion animals to be licensed. Illinois definition "Companion animal" includes, but is not limited to, canines, felines, and equines. I would have to be licensed to own 3 horses, a dog and a couple barn cats!

      Sometimes I hate this state.

BRAT knows about this dog. I believe they will even help with transport if someone from another area wants to adopt him. My husband won't let me have another forever dog and I'm not approved to foster. I hope this dog doesn't get put down.

    • RE: OK-Special Needs Female B in Shelter

"Their Petfinder info states that they only keep animals 4-7 days and only open M-F 9-5!"

One of the reasons it is so hard for people to adopt or claim their lost pets. Pet shelters that are only open when the majority of people are working. My county shelter is only open M-F 8am - noon!
