My female B has had Giardia twice. Both times she showed no symptoms and they found it while testing her yearly fecal sample. She was put on antibiotics and is fine. I take both my Bs to the river every weekend so assuming that's where she's getting it. I try not to let her drink any standing water but it could be anything.

RE: What do you think about this name??
I have a female named Bandit! Her AKC name is Bandit, outlaw of the West!
She totally lives up to her name. She's a ragamuffin, through & through! Nothing girly about her at all!!!

RE: What is that - oh, I know, it's a …..
My first B, Congo, was once identified by a woman with a little boy as "one of those biting benjis!". He was the sweetest B I've ever had!

RE: Electric fence?
I haven't heard any success stories with electronic fences for Bs. I know my 2 would ignore it, especially if they saw a critter that needed chasing!!!

Happy 6th birfday Hunter
Happy 6th birfday to my little BRAT boy, Hunter.
oh boy, he's a rescue for a reason.
Precious is the best word to describe him.
He keeps me on my toes!!!!
He so wants to be BFF's with my girl, Bandit, but she just tolerates him.Cheeseburgers are in order tonight!!!!!

RE: Going to attempt this a second time..
My girl, Bandit, has a note in her file that she can't be awake in a cage or she FREAKS out. She will try to chew through the metal bars, half sedated, and they will take her out and someone has to sit with her on their lap until I come get her.
I am like you. I drop her off right before whatever, and they call me RIGHT when she shows signs of waking up so that no one has to be stuck up front with a sleepy basenji on their lap, trying to work!
She's never had to be crated, except as a tiny pup, hence the FREAK out session!!!!!

Happy 11th birfday Bandit
My baby girl turned 11 yesterday. Sorry I'm a day late in posting!!!!
I got her from a BYB when she was 8 weeks to the day.
She's grown in to a 30 lb ragamuffin who would loves to be outside in the rain, her favorite place is the Cedar river, she is STILL destructive indoors and I'm pretty sure that if she were human, she'd be the man in the relationship!!!!
I got her a Birthday fast food cheeseburger last night on my way home from work. I tore it into pieces. Gave a piece to Hunter, my BRAT boy, and a piece to Bandit. Hunter didn't even taste his chunk. Bandit looked at me and spit it on the floor!!!! She looked at me like "I know why you don't eat this stuff but, really, for my birthday!!!!!". She finally ate up, after Hunter offered to eat hers for her!!!
Love my girl and here's hoping to 5 more years together!

RE: Anyone have trouble not being able to sleep if the dogs aren't in bed with you?
It takes me a while to fall asleeep anyways, if I'm not in my bed. I call myself the meat in the basenji sandwich! We all have our assigned places in the bed.

RE: And now for the question we all ask ourselves…
It's to keep their naked tummies warm!!!!

RE: Do you put a coat or sweater on your Basenji?
My female B is very rugged and doesn't need clothes. My tiny BRAT boy needs to wear as much as he can but he eats everything I've put on him. I told him he just needs to grow thicker fur then!!!

RE: He just popped his head up!
Mine steal the TP out of my hand and eat it!!!!! Crazy Bs!!!!

RE: It's Official…
Both my Bs love furniture!!!
I can't count how many couch covers I have gone through. Why do I have to cover my couch? You guessed it! Sheets, blankets, more comforters than I can count, pillows,
I must be made of $$$$$$$$$

RE: AJ
My heart goes out to AJ and to you. My BRAT boy is 5 and I got him when he was 1 1/2.
I'm guessing he bit his first Mom and she had no other recourse but to rehome him. I had no idea at the time. There has been blood, on both humans and my other B. He was never socialized, he resource guards, men scare him, transferred aggression towards my other b, etc etc.
I took him to a behaviourist and she gave me some tools but some things you just can't change.
I, too, have thought that I should put him down as he can't be rehomed. I just have to keep him sequestered in most situations.
Again, I feel your pain. It is your decision to make. He can't be happy, feeling the way he does. I, too, enjoyed your travel stories and hope to once again read about new adventures for you!!!!!

BRAT rescue & 2 year old Chihuahua
I have a party every May for my birthday/excuse to have a party.
Every year people bring dogs and every year it's ok. We figure out who likes who and who needs to stay away from who, etc… I have a 10 year old B girl that I've had since she was 8 weeks and she gets along with everyone.
This year my 5 year old BRAT boy, Hunter (who I've had since he was 1 1/2), WENT AFTER the 2 year old Chihuahua, Mijo. Scared the life out of me!!!!! I couldn't stop shaking!!!!
I knew he'd never met a dog that small and the introduction did not go as planned. It didn't go at all! All of a sudden, there we all were and what is this tiny creature??!!!! Happy to say the Mijo can run like the wind and my friend helped me pin Hunter down so I could grab him.
He's still sore about being uninvited to the party and being locked in my bedroom all night. He thanked me by pulling my robe off the back of the door and eating the lid off of a cardboard box in my closet but it could've been MUCH worse.
If you even wonder what your B will do with small dogs, don't wonder! Hunter lives up to his name and he obviously thought Mijo was just a little backyard pest to be dealt with.
No harm came from this but I profusely apologized to my friend and she is real laid back. I had already told myself that Hunter might have to be locked up. I was right even before the event started.
Again, please watch your Bs around the little dogs! My 10 year old, Bandit, has seen dogs of every shape & size, Hunter hasn't. And now he won't be!!!!!

RE: 10y/o with a sensitive stomach
My 13 year old male got Giardia and lost weight/muscle mass. Never did put the weight back on, no matter what I fed him. Poor guy was just skin and bones but lived to be 16! He did enjoy eating white rice and chicken but never ate enough to really make a difference. But it made me happy!

RE: Blackheads, whiteheads, doggy pimples (ew!)
My female gets whiteheads on her belly/groin area because when she pees, she's stays so close to the ground! I do pop them if she doesn't clean herself up good enough. My vet said I could use wet wipes and that might help.

RE: Funny, he dosen't look Basenji
If you check out the website www.dogshaming.com you get the feeling that basenjis probably invented doggie destruction but definitely don't have a corner on the market. Too funny!!!!!
