Its the busy season.12 Apr 2013, 02:20Maybe I should sign up. There are only 7 working spots. I just wonder if I can go anywhere with it, where I am.
I would say give it a try. If you like to see them work, problem solve and hunt for stuff, it's worth it. It's great mental stimulation for them, and for Basejni's that like to problem solve, I think it's the perfect sport. No obedience, just find the source odor so i can have my cookie!
I would imagine that the instructor might bring a seasoned dog, so that you would be able to see what a more advanced level would look like, which is neat to watch. With seven working spots, there might also be a few audit spots too; which means there might be enough people in the area to get something going! You can also check the National Association of Canine Sent Work (NACSW) at http://www.funnosework.com/home.html. They have a list of instructors; however, it looks to be limited to the states, but they do update it from time to time.
I find the sport to be a bit more relaxed too, every one is super supportive! They are open and welcome reactive dogs (people or dog), and they give out a special award (The Harry Award) to a rescue dog that competed and showed outstanding performance and team work with the handler.

Its the busy season.11 Apr 2013, 18:31I am currently doing nosework with my basenji, Rocco, we both love it. He's gotten his NW1 title and we are working towards getting his NW2. While it hasn't replaced the counter surfing, crumb hunting and dirty laundry seeking it has at least given him a job to use his natural talents.
Totally recommend it! -

Walks not enjoyable1 May 2009, 23:05I tried the gentle leader, head harness; however, at the time Rocco was between sizes, so I did not feel I could get it quite right. I used the harness version, and that worked pretty good?until he stole it from the closet and chewed it up?I highly recommend you use a combination of a harness with the clip on the front (as this will make pulling more difficult) and training classes. As far as managing a dog in the car, the safest way is with a crate. At first they might not like it, but over time with more practice they will adjust. It only took a few classes for Rocco to figure out that riding in the crate meant he would be going to ?hang? out with some other puppies.

Basenjis near Worcester, MA?29 Sept 2008, 02:41We are in Holliston, but have yet to make it to the Sharron Dog park. We are occasionally up in Nashua too; however, we are mid kitchen remodel, which means weekends are DIY and only walks around the block.
foschatt, is the Derry NH park fenced in?

Is your Basenji a Love Pig???????13 Aug 2008, 02:21My first, Bambi, was a "love on my terms" kinda dog much like our current cat. Rocco on the other hand is like my shadow…ALWAYS wants to be near one of us...I wasnt sure if this was a female vs male thing or not...of course its those times that he is off doing his own thing we become worried...as it generally means he's up to something.

Awesone Exercise12 Aug 2008, 00:33Rocco and I did it today on our normal walking route; we both did ok. I like how this starts out slow, I thought the 90 second run was just the right amout it work out to be about the time i would look at my timer to see if i could walk!

Rocco at the pool12 Aug 2008, 00:24Yes he is spoiled!
Impressive - how did he handle the swaying?
The first few sessions I made sure that it did not sway much, just wanted to get him used to being on the float. The day we took these pictures he had been on the float at the steps a few times. I was making it sway a number of times to get him used to it, he did very well.
We are planning on getting a life jacket, looking at the Ruff Wear, is that what you have NinaBeana?

Q-Tip obsession11 Aug 2008, 00:45Rocco is the same with TP…and he can be so delicate at pulling it off the roll to maximize the length of the TP trail...and then the wonderful delicacy of paper towels!...he can find paper towels in places i never knew there were some...walks into a room and b-lines it right for the paper...ughh...

Rocco at the pool11 Aug 2008, 00:04Here are the newest pictures of Rocco at the pool. This time he was quite happy to be on the float. Although no pictures, he did swim a little (3 times from the float to the steps). Our goal is to have a Kayaking Basenji before the end of summer!
Ahhh, the power of peanut butter!
Right before he decided to swim to the edge.
