    @Sharla:

    Monica,

    My kids range in age from 9 months to 7 years. But 2 won't be able to attend because they are grandma's house in "heat" poor babies! My first visit I think I would start with one of the young ones, Maximus. He is my beautiful b/w boy that is already a lap dog! Unlike the others it took them years to settle into just hanging out on our laps..

    Any idea on time, that will be the challenge for us since we have a dog show that day. But I haven't looked at the times yet.

    I actually heard about the forum through some other basenji friends. It still amazes me when I randomly see a b walking on the street with their people :)

    Wow! So you must have quite a few Bs. Our group consists mostly of R&W Bs. Our only B&W member, Lucy, and her owner Sarah will be excited to meet Maximus.

    We havent decided what time we're meeting on the 26th. We're trying to find a time that works best for most people. Is morning, afternoon or evening better for you?

    Where's the dog show and what time are the Bs showing? we might want to go spectate. There's also an AKC lure course competition going on that day. I was thinking of taking Manny and Kahlee to see their Basenji and Ibizan friends. They're not so much into lure coursing though. :confused:

    @Sharla:

    Do we know the next date for the Oct gathering? I have not attended before and would like to. Please post when a date and location is determined.

    thanks
    sharla

    Hi Sharla,

    Welcome to the forum and the San Diego basenji community. We look forward to meeting you and your "kids." I hope you can join us at our Oct meeting (tentatively scheduled for the 26th at Balboa Park - time TBD).

    How did you hear about this forum? I'm always astounded to learn there's more basenjis in san diego than we thought. We thought we were a rarity, which we still kind of are. Its so cool to be at a dog park with our pack and be the majority instead of the minority. People seem to marvel at our beautiful breed. There's something really cool about a basenji pack.

    How old are you B's?

    I'm so excited that our San Diego basenji community has been growing with every meeting that we have. Every time we encounter a new basenji owner, we've tried to figure out the best way to get them plugged in and informed about the next meeting. I thought it was time for us to have our own site so we can communicate more easily, instead of using meetup.com for example.

    On our new yahoo group we can create photo albums (which will help put names to all the beautiful faces), send messages, upload files, schedule events on the calendar, etc. The easiest way to find it is to go to Yahoo Groups and search "San Diego Basenjis." You can also click on the link below.

    http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SanDiegoBasenjis/?v=1&t=search&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=group&slk=1

    You will need to create a yahoo login to become a member. Best wishes!

    Monica

  • Hello from San Diego (CA)
    supermanS superman

    @Terry:

    Welcome to Manny and you!
    We are also in San Diego (Penasquitos)
    You got a major love in Manny - whenever we would see him with Denise at a show, we always had to get our Manny fix. He would just wag his tail and cuddle up even then!

    Terry

    Terry,

    I think I know who you are. I met Bob a long time ago at a dog show in San Marcos (before we had Manny). Manny still wags his tail A LOT! I met a friend of Denise's once (she owns Echo) and she asked me how often he does it. Apparently Echo has only done it twice in her lifetime and once after her owner was gone for a whole week. Its so cute to see his big "cinnabun" shake.

    I took a pic of his curly tail just for you. I wonder if Manny misses the shows. I stacked him for the pic and he growled at me. Hahaha.

  • Speed Demons
    supermanS superman

    Our two boys Manny and Khali (our beezer) are little speed demons every time they go to a dog park. In this pic they are the two on the far right. I took them lure course once thinking they would really enjoy it since they run so fast at the park. But nope, I was wrong. All they want to do is play and chase each other. I thought "gee, I should have saved my money and taken them to a dog park instead." they would have gotten more exercise that way.

    I'll try to video tape them one of these days. They are so comical. They get all the dogs in the park worked up and then they leave them in the dust. In this pic Khali is chasing Manny, but 99% of the time Khali LOVES being the one chased. He purposefully antagonizes Manny to get him to chase him by nipping on his tail (and you should never mess with the tail). Funny considering Ibizans were bred to hunt game. Go figure!

    By the way, that's Shermon on the far left.

    @Lunas:

    I would like to know where the next meet up will be. Can't do Saturdays due to work but Sundays and Mondays are good for me. Have you guys tried Fiesta Island dog park? That place is huge. Cairo gets exhausted after 1 lap of saying hello to all the dogs.
    Dan

    Dan,

    We have thought about going to Fiesta Island. We met in Mira Mesa in May and Carmel Valley and Balboa Park in June. Our intent is to alternate locations and try new places. We'll have to try it out. We have some Bs living as far north as Vista, Poway, and Carlsbad and some in downtown SD. Right now we're undecided about our next location. If you want to join us, send your email to me or Catt.

    We had another meeting on June 7 in Carmel Valley. Here's a link to the album. Catt volunteered to send email notifications for our next meeting. At our last meeting it was suggested we BBQ. Any takers? We should pencil in a date (preferrably a Sunday so more people can join us) in July.

    We really did have a great time. We had 6 basenjis show up and for the first 20-30 mins all they wanted to do is sniff each other and stay close to their owner. After a while, they ventured off in the park, and mostly in pairs. One man came up to us and asked "how many are there? I keep seeing them all over the place." Its a large dog park and I'm sure he thought he was seeing double.

    We're meeting again this Saturday morning, most likely at the Del Mar Heights dog park. Contact monicazam(at)gmail.com if anyone in SD wants to join us.

  • Bella is a GIRL!!! Tell THAT to people we meet!
    supermanS superman

    I have a neutered male and people always mistake him for a female - I assume because they dont see any dangling "monkey brains" ….lol.

    In general, aren't females smaller in frame than males? I have noticed that females are usually smaller. But as mentioned by someone, if ppl arent familiar with the breed they wont know the difference.

    I forwarded your post to my friend who owns a B/W female B named Lucy. She's interested in a second dog and she's a fantastic B owner, very gentle and responsible. Her name is Sarah. I hope she contacts you soon.

  • Little Update on Jack and Aiden

    We're pregnant too and a little fearful about the change for our little man. This weekend he interacted with my 10 month old neice pretty well. I didnt let her do much to him though. He smelled her and walked away disinterested.

    My husband (who has a science background) says our smell changes b/c of the hormones. I wonder if our B's know something's up. Just to be on the safe side, we're going to have someone dog sit for the first week when the baby comes.

    Good luck.
