I spent 1200+ miles with solomon in my pickup, and the problem has gone away, I really suspect he caught and ate some type of little critter!! I was checking on them the other evening and caught him just as he was downing something, it was down before i could get out thru the patio! I have taken several birds away from them that the had killed. I have not tried the yorgot yet but will keep it in mine! I wonder if buttermilk would do the same? Thanks for all of the great idea's it has been a much happier home!!

RE: Room clearing Gas
I allways take there dog food with them when they stay ate the kennel, He allways looses weight when he stays there. This kennel is his vet also so everyone there knows them both. I suspect it is from the consant activity that goes on in the kennel! It make him very active. Health wise I can not find any thing wrong, although he will be going to get checked out next week. He is traveling with me in the car this weekend. I think I am going to go back to Nutro chicken and Rice, if this does not clear up.

Room clearing Gas
Solomon has started getting this Real bad gas, He is on Nutro dry dog food, I have noticed this most after I had him boarded a few weeksback. i kinda was thinking maybe he had a parasite infecton of some type. But my female has not seemed to have the problem and she was with him the whole time.
I am taken them on a trip with me and i am not sure I can stand being in the car with him and my wife at the same time. She is not tolerant of his lack of manners. Does beano work on dogs? Please send any ideas!!Glenn

RE: Road Trips with Basenjis
I take my Basenji's with me almost anytime I travel in the car, I won't subject them to a plane. They get a sitter if I have to fly, I have tried boarding and Solomon lost a lot of weight and I was not very comfortable about the boarding process. I allway's put a kennel in the back and allways leave a 6' leash on them anytime they are in the car. It make it much easier to control when you make stops. Mine don't get car sick but My daughters B allways got sick and we started giving a couple of ginger snaps and that as cured her car sickness. Best of Luck!

RE: Never boarded Basenji
I had to make a trip to North Dakota the end of December and I debated taking my Basenji with me, having a sitter or boarding! I checked out all of the kennels in the area and talked to sitters. I really wanted to take him but the plane idea and the fact they had No Green grass showing and lots of snow ruled that out very quickly. I thought about the sitter but I didn't know of anyone that could spend enough time to watch him day and night, and I think they would have been worn out, not to mention what he would have done to my house. So I reluctantly boarded him, I called to check on him often, and the kennel assured me he has doing great and was eating well. I was so relieved until I got home. When I picked him up I was shocked how much weight he had lost and he had shredded his bed while he was there, Anyway I took him home and he was back to is normal self in about 3 days. The vet did give him the nasal med for the Kennel cough but he did not appreciate that at all. I normally take him with me all the time and he travels very well in the kennel in the back seat. I don't really want to ever board him in a kennel again, but would if it is the best for him, I think it is harder on me because I worry about him so much.

RE: Male Basenji needs Female friend
I am planning to show him this coming year, He has everything that i could want in a Basenji, But I don't know what the judges would think of him! I have a trainer that is going to work with him and I over the next few months. He does have some great gene's. I can only hope he does well, It really doesn't mean a great deal to me because he has so many great traits and is a delight to be around.

I am looking for female basenji as friend for my 1 year old male basenji. would be interested in healthy show prospect, although might be interested in puppy. My male is a very typical brindle male, and is spooled rotten!! But he need a friend that he can run and play with.

RE: Electronic Collar Training
I rave read all of the post on the shock collars and to be quite honest I am confused! My basenji Solomon loves to escape thru the garage door and back fence gate any time he has a chance! I really try to watch him very closely but once he is free he does not respond to voice comands at all. He we go untill he finds another dog are something that intrest him. This is very scary because I don't think he has any street smarts at all! I have borrowed a shock collar to try, but I plan to use it only as a training device to see if I can stop this behavior, I really am conerned about its effects but I would be be so very upset if any thing ever happened to him while he was out on one of his adventures. I think you have to use the training device while he is thinking about his next move, in other words before he goes though the door, not after he has already escaped. I would like to hear opinions on there use!

Adding basenji as puppy playmate
We got the chance to dog sit my daughters Basenji, while she is off on vacation. It has been a pretty good experience so far. Day 3!!! Solomon is 7 month old and Sadie is 3 year old. They have done very well together although it is difficult to tell if they are playing are trying to kill each other!!
If this works out I am in the market for another basenji because, he has been very happy to have a friend to play with. I told my daughter I woulud just keep her's and as you might imagine that was a diffiant No.

RE: Solomon 5 months old
Solomon has trouble with his bite , but reponds to "No Bite",but I really have to be carefull when playing with him because he is so much faster that i can't react to his play. He played with 2 small children the other day, I watched him very closely, and I was very pleased he followed them around and played all day long. He was wore out when they went home. That is something i can't tire him out no matter what we do.

RE: Baby Teeth
I will wait, for a few more weeks, I am going to take him in to have id chip installed and will discuss with my vet. I gues I am just looking forward to have that part of puppy-hood behind us. He is a very normal basenji!!!
Thanks for all of the advice!

RE: Baby Teeth
his adult k9 are not fully in yet,but is baby one's are not really loose, I check them daily. A friend told me I should get a towell and give it some good jerks to loosen. I have not done that, although i have been playing tug with him in hopes they will loosen.

Baby Teeth
I have been concerned that Solomon has not lost his last 2 upper fangs, the adult cannine teeth are coming in nicely, but the baby teeth still seem fairly solid. He is 6 month old and this has not seemed to caused him any problems other than he has not eating a lot, but he is getting enough. I may try wetting his food a little and heating it in the microwave. I would like to know how soon other besenji's loose their teeth?

RE: Trimming Nails
This was so helpful I had allready gone out at got a dremmel and thought I had made a bad mistake, My B Solomon was Not going to allow that tool to be used on his toe's. Are at least without a fight, I gave up. I read the info on the use of the dremmel and it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the ideas.

RE: Puppy crate question
The Crate has been the best thing to contain my basenji, when I am not at the house. I allways give him a treat when he enters his crate, and make him sit when i let him out. I try not to keep him there more than 4 hour at any time. I have started letting him stay outdoors for short stays not more than 2 hours, but allway worry even though i have a high fence. I have not made up my mind if I am going to install electric fence high and low, or install a dog run. I really want him to have a safe place to play. Glenn

RE: Leash training
I had to make an unexpected trip out of town Last Wednesday night, my leash training was not going well at all, I loaded his cate in the trunk, and packed him a bag, with Toy's, treats. I went back into the house, put his leash on and Presto he was a new dog; I was so surprised I made a stop at a rest area and no problems at all. I was surprised to see his mane stand up for the 1st time, that was neat. He did well on all of his potty breaks, If I could get him to do that well at home!! I only wish I had the time to stay with him though out the day. Glen
