    @Chealsie508:

I love that both of them are looking right at the camera!!
As soon as Oak sees the camera he does everything he can to avoid it!

You know my B/mix does the same thing. As soon as he sees me with the camera he stops doing what he was doing and stands at my legs, turning away from the camera.

He is definately my Best Friend! There is never a dull moment with my B/terrier mix. He is a riot. I laugh at him all the time. When he cuddles with me I can't get enough. He is sooooooooooo smart yet at times he does things that make you wonder. I couldn't imagine being without him. I have a golden retriever which is my service dog and while I absolutey adore him, there is a different feeling there with Taz my B/mix.

  • Taz's first yodel!
    S SissyT213

I can't believe I have had Taz for a year now and he has never yodeled like this before. He always had this gravely growly sound that he would make when he wanted you to throw something, but it really never sounded like a yodel. Yesterday, he was barking at my golden retriever which he rarely does, but it turned into a true yodel. It really sounded like a gravely yodel.

My Taz loves the beaches. He chases the Frisbee and has actually learned to doggy paddle to get the Frisbee in deeper water. I have posted those on here before.

Hi, I also have a basenji / Jack Russell mix. He is definitely a hand full. He has the personality of a basenji. The one thing that he has is his floppy ears. His ears don't stand up, but other than that, he is basenji up one side and down the other.

  • Skin Issues?????
    S SissyT213

I am going to get into this by only saying that if you give your baby benedryl then you can give as much as 1 mg per pound of body weight. It's a simple formula. 1 mg = 1 lb of body weight. I use it every day for my dogs due to allergies mine have to the bugs. My golden retriever takes 3 every day and can even be given twice a day if need be. This is the information I got from my vet whom I trust very much.

  • Levi and Taz play fighting with their heads under a blanket. It's hilarious!
    S SissyT213

Here's a link to a video of Taz and Levi playing together under the blanket. This is how they play all the time.

I hope this works. This is the only way I know to attach a video to this forum. If anyone knows of a different way to attach them, please let me know.

  • Taz and Levi's big adventure
    S SissyT213

My golden retriever does take off after the deers but he seems to be more startled by them, not saying he won't. Never say Never. However, as with Levi he is also showing great promise with the whistle recall as well. We practice it all the time on the trail, and seems to respond about 95% of the time. I am aware of the possibly of him chasing something, but I am also fairly sure he would recall with the whistle once done chasing as my golden retriever does. We also don't have typically anything dangerous out in these woods. This is all property of William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va and just contains hiking/biking and jogging trails. The only thing we have here are deer and squirrels, we do have racoon and skunks and opossums but are seen very rarely though I do watch out for possible situations. Thanks you for the advice though, it's always welcome. But just thought I would show off some pictures of our happy adventures!

  • Taz and Levi's big adventure
    S SissyT213

As you all know I just adopted Taz, my basenji / terrier mix about 3 months ago. Since that day, I have been diligently training Taz on the basics. He is smart and usually finds a way around the rules but being basenji means staying on your toes. I never have let him off leash except at the football field where he is fenced in. I always worried about him running off and getting lost. I have however, been working with him at the football field on the whistle recall. I didn't think he was ready to be trusted off leash because I felt his recall was somewhat lacking. Well about 2 weeks or so ago I decided to take him and Levi over to the trails across the street where we usually go mountain biking and hiking normally. At first I hooked them up together and let them run. Every so often, Taz would drag his butt on the ground to make Levi stop, because he caught a wiff of something he wanted to explore, but couldn't because he was attached to Levi. So, at that point, I decided to let Taz run by himself but with the leash still attached. I had concerns but cautiously watching his every move, I hiked on. As we continued, I started to notice that he was sticking to me like glue. If he stops to smell something, I can't get too far down the trail before he comes bounding down the trail behind me sounding like a miniature horse. So, now, everytime we go hiking he has been off leash. We hike with the dogs almost every day, weather permitting, instead of going to the ball field. The dogs get their exercise and so do we. Here are a few shots of them on different days. I think Taz's coat matches him perfectly!

  • This was Taz's first adventure in the snow with Levi
    S SissyT213

Taz and Levi are hooked together to keep Taz from wandering or running off. This was the last day I hooked them together. I now let him run by himself but this was before I felt comfortable letting him run by himself. They are running down the trail ahead of us and then they stop and wait for us, then run ahead again. The part where I am messing with the dogs and the camera is bouncing around is because my Golden Retriever got a ball of ice and dirt froze to his paw. I wish I had shoes for him but we don't have days like this very often here in south eastern Virginia. This was the first time he has worn a coat as well and did quite well with it.

  • Taz's hiking adventure
    S SissyT213

As you all know I adopted a basenji/terrier mix named Taz back in early November. I have been working diligently on Taz's training and he is really picking things up. He is a stubborn little b, as he is always trying to find a way around the rules. He now sits automatically when he gets his leash put on, before we go through a door, in or out, he knows what off means (making him get down from the chair when I want to sit down) and he knows the down command, He is walking great on a leash as long as I reign him in and make him walk properly, but likes to pull when left to sniff and smell everything. He sits when waiting to cross the street with me. He does wonderful in all those situations. However I was worried about his off leash recall as I have never had him off leash in an area that was not fenced in and even then his recall leaves a lot to be desired. I have been working on him with a whistle recall and it works sometimes when he knows he is going to get a cookie, or when he is not interested in something else. So going on a long 3 to 4 mile hike, I didn't trust letting him off leash in the woods on the trail. I have been hiking with him for the majority of the time I have had him as my bf and I love to take long hikes with the dogs out on the trails. We usually use a two dog coupler to attach the dogs together and let them loose on the trails and my golden retriever Levi will lead the way down the trails ahead of us, but will stop a short distance away from us to wait, because he is my service dog he won't go very far from me. Well to make a longer story a little shorter, I decided the other day after seeing Taz's response to being outside without a leash one day by accident sticking by my side and not running off, that I would test him out on the trails. I attached his leash to him and let it trail along behind him, so I could step on it if I needed to, to catch him, and let him go. Not too worried but watchfull of him, I started walking down the trail and he would run down the trail with Levi for a little bit then stop and look back and wait for me to catch up. If he got sidetracked on the trail by a smell I would just keep walking and let him sniff, but when I got too far ahead for my comfort I would whistle for him and he would come running up the path behind me sounding like a miniature horse. I was able to hike the entire trail with him basically off leash and he stuck to me like glue. I am so proud of him! I feel like our bond has finally developed wholely. He also had his first snow experience as well as his second and I have a new coat for him which he fought me tooth and nail to put it on the first time (had to give him a handfull of cookies to get him to sit still, lol), and now he knows that putting on the coat is a good thing so as soon as I bring out the coat he sits right in front of me and lets me put the coat on with no problem, because he loves the snow, and that has been the only times I have needed to put the coat on him since our weather here has been so mild. Needless to say my experience with him has been mixed with good and bad times (like a chewed up cell phone, but it seems that the good times are far out weighing the bad times by a wide margin.

  • Need advice with random chewing while at work.
    S SissyT213

I also have a Basenji / terrier mix and he is an avid chewer. My bf is the same way about his chewing. It makes him upset when he finds one of his things chewed up by Taz. I have found that Nyla Bones are great for them as well. Get the ones for the powerful chewers as they have them labled. If you use the ones for powerful chewer they don't go through them as fast. My Golden retriever "Levi" and Taz both love them. I also get them bones as well. He tends to leave other things alone when he has one that he is focused on. The bitter apple may not work as my Taz will chew anything with that sprayed on it, lol. I hope this is helpful to you. Watch out for the table surfing too. If she is anything like my Taz he loves to stand up beside tables and get anything that is on there in his reach.

  • Sick Dog Question– help, please?!
    S SissyT213

Have you thought of thrush? I was on a 7 day course of high dose steroids in December of 2000 due to my ms and it caused me to develop thrush. I now also get it when I take antibiotics as well. What happens is when you take antibiotics or steroids, it kills all bacteria and it allows the yeast to grow unchecked and causes lesions to grow on the tongue and down the throat and it is very painful. Since you said your spenser was on antibiotics and steroids, it makes sense to me.

  • Does it fit?
    S SissyT213

That's a great idea, thanks for the tip. How long does it usually take to train them to always bring it back. I will tell you that my dog is so smart that he has figured out that if he drops the ball in front of Levi then Levi will bring it back to me and he can get into position to catch the next ball too, instead of taking turns, like I like them to.

  • Having a little trouble with my two Basenjis
    S SissyT213

Btw, I never interfere with them, as they always work it out, and dogs don't hold grudges so the puppy learns her lesson and learns who is the more dominant dog.
