We had to miss the last meetup since Q was only 4 weeks old, but he is a MUCH older 8 weeks now, so we will be there. Sherman can't wait to run around and get some exercise with his B friends!

My mom (who lives in Pennsylvania, by the way) called me earlier today to tell me that she saw a news story about a physical therapy place in CA and that a basenji was featured. I said, "was his name Wily??" and of course it was. I guess Wily is a NATIONAL star now :) Just thought you'd like to know that news agencies across the country are showing that piece with your boy!

Oh wow! Quite a community of Starfyre B's out there. Sherman was born Dec. 5th. If you saw the pups, he would have been the giant one :) He now weighs in at 40 lbs but he is not fat at all, just a big dude.

If you are ever in SoCal we should try to get the dogs together!

Mauigirl - I didn't even realize that Robyn had another litter of pups. I guess it's because Sherman still seems like such a baby to me, although he is a year and a half now. Guess he'll always be my baby!! :)

Mauigirl - Oh! Very cool! We only got to see Sherman for the first time when he was 6 weeks old. He was the biggest of the litter of 5 and that is why we named him after a tank! He is still a giant - he is not fat, but he weighs FORTY pounds!! I thought my last B was big at 30 pounds… Sherman's daddy looks like he was a really big boy too, so we were not too surprised. His sire is Avongara Kasabu - pix on the BCOA african stock project page.

We probably met Zip, too when we went to Denise's to meet Robyn (shermies mom). Too bad you aren't still here in SoCal - you could meet us at the dog park!

Ha! Ha! Yes, Sherman is a legend (in his own mind…). I would think that we can probably switch to Sundays versus Saturdays to meet. I have heard of Fiesta Island, but not gone there yet, either. As long as nothing is going on in San Diego that day (i.e. - a marathon, sporting event, etc) we can drive down from Carlsbad for the next meetup.

Mauigirl - we also got our basenji - Sherman - from Denise Searcy! We met Manny when we met with Denise and Shermie's mom (Ch. Starfyre's Rock 'N Robyn). We may have even met Zip then too. Or, maybe you met Sherman as a tiny puppy, depending on when you got Zip.

We had a great time at the park on Saturday too! Sherman was completely exhausted (yay!) after playing with all the B's and other dogs at the park. I was surprised by how many basenji's were there and I can't wait to see Eric's pictures :)

Sherman and I are sorry we couldn't make it to the play date. With two new foster basenji's, I just wasn't sure they were ready for all the excitement!
I'm sure it was a lot of fun.

I am so sorry to hear of Wily's accident. Even though I haven't had the chance to meet Wily, I am hoping and praying that he will recover.

I know how horrible it is to have something like this happen to your dog while you are out of town. I lost my first basenji nearly two years ago while I was looking for a job in the San Diego area. At the time I lived in Charlotte, NC. My petsitter never called me to tell me that perfectly healthy 5-year-old basenji, Bosley wasn't acting right (didn't want to eat or go for a walk and had had horrible black diarhhea throughout the condo). I came home to find him nearly unable to walk. He died a few hours later from "something toxic" he must have eaten. A necropsy did nothing to determine what that "something" was. I have never been able to fully forgive my petsitter for what I felt was a lack of care and concern.

We hate to have to leave our guys at home and we do the best that we can to make sure that they are in good hand when we have to go out of town, but sometime terrible things happen no matter what we do.

Please keep us updated on Wily's condition.

Maybe one of these weeks Sherman and I can make it out to the park. Would definitely be worth the drive to see him playing with other B's!!

Hello all,

I am new to the basenji forum. I have been trying to find other basenji's in the area for my year old basenji (Sherman) to play with, but with no luck so far.

Even if we had to travel a bit to get to a dog park where Sherman could play with other B's, it would be worth it. Does anyone have any specific days/times that you get together with other basenji owners in the southern california area?
