I like them too. Although Roxy doesn't have a blaze on the forehead, she has a full collar and so she has a lot of contrast. It's been quite a year but I'd have to say, FINALLY she has me trained!

Roxy - my cutie
Roxy's first birthday was last week. She has grown into a beauty - and very well behaved for a B! Here are some photos of her at her best! 1) keeping watch, 2) at the park and 3) sleeping.

RE: Fetch!!!
Roxy and I play fetch every night with a tennis ball in the house. Most of the time she'll bring the ball back near me and drops it. She always runs after it when thrown.

RE: First Time Dog Owner
Oh believe me! I've figured out who is in charge. We are doing well, though. I'm a schedule person and I've got Roxy on a sort of schedule. Of course it involves when she eats, and when she plays, and when she goes to the dog park, and when she gets treats and lastly, when she goes to bed. Now that I think about it…... I think she has me on a schedule!

RE: urine testing Do I need strips specific for dogs or can the strips used by humans be used? And if so, is the an upper limit of normal for glucose? Or is any glucose abnormal?

RE: New Breeder Needs Help
I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the original poster - LiLi. Sorry for the confusion.

RE: New Breeder Needs Help
I wouldn't try to comment on breeding protocol, but I sure didn't like your comment about getting 2 litters out of her and then placing her in a permanent home. Shouldn't your dog be your pet first?

RE: First Time Dog Owner
Were they DNA tested and in that case would be on the OFA site? or just strip tested?….
I'll have to ask. I was told that they were tested and negative. Thanks.

RE: First Time Dog Owner
I will take the advise given and will have her tested for a UTI. I know that both parents of Roxy were tested for Fanconi and were negative. Perhaps I'm expecting too much too soon?

LVoss - more food for thought. She lost her second canine about a week ago. I'm having her spayed in July. And I will follow up on the UTI possiblility. The times that she's had these accidents, she's not doing the usual back and forth run which I've learned means she needs to go out. She just walks up, squats and pees. Thanks!

RE: First Time Dog Owner
Please send me info on the urine testing. I've not heard of that although I have read a lot about possible health problems with B's. Also - I have been thinking about researching lure coursing. She is so fast compared to many of the other dogs she runs with at the park. I don't know if she'a exceptionally fast because I'm so new to all of this. I live in Southern California. Do you know of any lure coursing in this area?

RE: First Time Dog Owner
Sharron - I crate her at night and keep her corraled in a large bathroom during the day if I'm out. I haven't had many problems with the crate. I leave the door open and she will lay in it during the day when tired. I haven't taken her to a formal obedience class but have had a lot of training (on my part and on Roxy's) from a sister-in-law who was an animal trainer in a previous life. Roxy does very well on the leash. She pulls very little anymore. She will sit next to me when I stop. She responds to sit, stay, get down and come as long as I am near her. I cannot walk away and expect her to stay. And I can't yet get her to come when called (unless I have something she wants!). If I have a treat in my hand, she will sit and freeze for quite a long time. (I usually count in my head and can get to 20.)
We had a few day of up all night a couple of weeks ago. My sis suggested keeping her awake as late as possible and then giving her a snack before putting her down for the night. Works like a charm!
I'm so surprized at her energy. I get her out for a walk every morning and every evening. And I take her to a dog park about 3 nights a week.

RE: First Time Dog Owner
My basenji came from a friend who had a litter - she isn't a breeder but has 4 dogs. Roxy is 6 months old and I think she is only doing typical stuff like shredding toilet paper rolls. The only truly distructive thing she's done is remove about 2 sq feet of wall paper in my kitchen!
For the past couple of weeks Roxy seems to be regressing with house training. I've been training her with a bell on the door and it's been working great. She doesn't ring it yet, but when I ring it she runs to the door and sits. But lately she's been coming near me and squatting to pee 1/2-1 hour after she's been out. It doesn't seem to be random as I'm always in view. It's happened 4 times in the past two weeks.
I'd upload a picture of Roxy but i haven't figured that out yet!

First Time Dog Owner
My little Basenji is the first dog I ever owned and I am surely being baptised by fire! She is such fun but quite a challange at times. I have read many of your posts and they are so helpful! Keep it up for us newbies.
