  • Opinions on introducing a boxer puppy into our family?
    R rockinmommy

We have an almost 3 yr old, neutered male Basenji….Jack. After calming down considerably in the last year or so he's a really good boy. He will generally get along really well with other dogs after a "getting to know you" phase. I can't remember introducing him to any puppies - it's all been adult dogs (mostly neutered males that I can think of).

We have always thought of getting another dog (our 17 yr old blue heeler died about a year ago), and now have a chance to get a boxer puppy. We could have our choice of male or female. They are right at 6 weeks old.

Anyone have any experience with this particular breed mix? Recommendations or opinion about male vs. female? I don't think we can handle another dog that will "escape" when given the chance and not come directly back when called, so we need a breed that we can train to come and stay and won't be negatively influenced by Jack in this area. (I will add that with our set up with our house and yard (we have a fenced 1/2 acre) this RARELY happens, but when it does........well, ya'll know if you have Basenjis!)

    Thanks in advance,
    Karla

  • What type of collar does your Basenji wear??
    R rockinmommy

    @jys1011:

fleece lined so their fur doesn't rub off / satin lined

I think that's what I'd like to try for him. Where to do get the lined collars?

    TIA,
    Karla

That's good to know. I looked at some of those, but couldn't tell if the seam would rub. Thanks for that suggestion!

Hi, everyone! My name is Karla. I'm in Amarillo, TX. My husband and I have 2 human daughters - almost 7 & 3 1/2. We have 2 furry kids….our "Granny", Maddie, is a 16 year old Blue Heeler and our baby, Jack, is a 10 month old Basenji.

I had a friend in college who had a Basenji, and I always remembered him as the neatest dog. I'd never seen another one before or since. We decided last winter to get a puppy for the girls. Our oldest was asking a lot of questions about Maddie dying, etc, and we thought it may be a little easier transition if we have another dog. Anyway, I was looking in the paper to see what was available and was floored to see an ad for Basenji puppies.

The girls absolutely LOVE Jack. They call him their baby. He's completely tolerant of them and doesn't even play bite or play rough with them like he enjoys doing with us adults. He can be a stubborn little stinker, but when I'm working with him like I should he's SO responsive to training. And who could resist how cuddly and lovey he is!?!

I wish I had access to my pics. I'm temporarily using a different computer, so will have to post pictures another time.

I posted a question about collars, so if anyone has suggestions in that department I'd love that!

Look forward to getting to know everyone!

What type of collar do ya'll use for "all the time", as well as walks, etc?

Jack, our 10 month old, has been wearing a woven, nylon collar. There's a spot on his lower neck/chest where it appears that his fur is basically rubbing off and the skin right there looks a little inflamed. I can't tell if it's from the collar itself or from his tags, or what. Before it gets worse I want to try something else. Right now he doesn't seem sore there or anything, but I don't want it to get to that point.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I've found a couple of collars that looked/felt softer, a little padded, etc, but they were all pink or foo-foo.

    Thanks in advance,
    Karla in TX
