  • Basenji in Iowa shelter???
    PunkyP Punky

    @sharronhurlbut:

Maybe someone over this animal control officers head will be more welcoming.
Honestly, if I was closer, I would just go down and adopter her out of that place.
That way, I would know she was in good hands.

I would if I could get there before she is adopted to someone else. Puppies often adopt quickly from here. I was out of town all day yesterday and will not be able to break away from work until later in the week. The BRAT coordinator knows this, so hopefully they will let me know if they need my help getting her.

  • Basenji in Iowa shelter???
    PunkyP Punky

That is exactly why I contacted BRAT instead of the shelter, because I wasn't sure of the shelter's policy on dealing with rescues. I wanted to let BRAT do what BRAT does and also be able to remain anonymous to the shelter just in case. I know there is at least one other BRAT volunteer in the area as well. Hopefully something can be done so that the little girl isn't adopted out and then sent back to the shelter. At least with BRAT she would be properly screened as well as the adopters.

  • Basenji in Iowa shelter???

I live in Davenport and sent the information on the puppy and the shelter to BRAT on Friday evening and let them know I was willing to help if needed. Hopefully the puppy will be in good hands.

  • New Pics of Tucker

Great pictures! He looks very content.

  • Rescue, stupid on toast people
    PunkyP Punky

The story I got on Sawyer from BRAT was that he was purchased by an elderly couple in their 80s. I read a thread on here about someone asking about a Basenji in a pet store and what the pet store told them….small, no barking, clean, low/non shedding....sounds like a great dog for someone in their 80s. Too bad that isn't what they really bought. He sheds, he is very vocal, he is very agile, and he is dominate and stubborn:rolleyes: But I love him to death.

  • Pictures of Tosca
    PunkyP Punky

I love the picture of her leaning on the desk going for the pens. We always make sure that we move the couch, chairs and anything else they can jump up on away from the desk…...but the other day while I was working on the computer Sawyer just jumps up on the desk right next to me with no effort and starts sniffing the pens and paper and looks at me like "What?'

  • Looking For Winter Coat

I bought coats from Ruffwear for my boys and have been really pleased with the coats especially since we have gotten so much snow.

    Happy Birthday Rally!
    The pictures are amazing.

  • I need support!
    PunkyP Punky

Great for you for trying to quit. If cold turkey doesn't work, don't get discouraged. I had to take Zyban and use cigarettes with decreasing level of nicotine to quit, I think they were a brand called Quest. It has been almost 5 years and I still want a cigarette sometimes. Hang in there.

  • Wyatt's 1st Birthday
    PunkyP Punky

Yesterday (29 Dec) was Wyatt's 1st birthday. We celebrated with a trip to the dog park where he got to race around with a greyhound and then some brave (or suicidal?) squirrels made an apprearance. He had a delicious bone shaped dog treat sandwich with some Merrick wetfood inside and he got a stuffed squirrel.

  • What did you get your B for Christmas?
    PunkyP Punky

I bought some Merrick treats for mine and some Bamboo toys. They seem much more sturdy than some of the other chew toys I have bought that get de-stuffed within a few hours…we'll see:rolleyes:
The B-boys bought bones for my sister's dogs and my in-laws dog, plus they got a dog calendar for my in-laws. They are such thoughtful little shoppers:p

  • Chewing on each other - playing or fighting?
    PunkyP Punky

I am glad that it is normal. I was starting to wonder about Wyatt and Sawyer. Most nights there is a mash up between NASCAR and WWE (or F)? in my house. They do the B-500 and bounce off of eachother and the furniture. They bounce off of the back of my couches the same way that "pro"-wrestlers use the ropes in the ring. I have to move furniture and rugs back to their original positions every night:o They chew on eachother during the whole process. They almost never yelp and when one does, they back off. They do this at the dog park as well with eachother. I see some people look on in horror, but they play normal with other dogs. They just play rough with eachother. I would love to see how they play with other Basenjis.

  • Dewey the 3/4 Basenji
    PunkyP Punky

Welcome Courtney and Dewey! This is a great place to get Basenji information. Those are some mighty ears on Dewey:D Do you know what he is mixed with?

  • Happy 15th Birthday Alex!
    PunkyP Punky

Alex still looks like a very handsome boy at 15:)
    Happy Birthday Alex!

  • Bathing question.
    PunkyP Punky

Wyatt really hates baths, he won't even go into the bathroom, except to sneak in to steal the bath mat:rolleyes: We have to use treats, a no slip mat, and we bought short leads attached to suction cups that we can place on the bottom of the tub or the sides. It gets a little better each time.

  • Poopie peek-a-boo
    PunkyP Punky

This thread is hysterical:p Sawyer is a poop walker and a pee walker, but has to keep at least on back leg off of the ground while peeing. Wyatt does the stretch and pee….but he does a pump poop. He does a normal squat but pumps his little back legs in and out to make the poop come out. It reminds me of the playdoh fuzzy pumper barber shop I got for Christmas when I was little:D

  • Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club Christmas Party
    PunkyP Punky

Great pictures. I would love to see how my boys would do with other B's. I would especially like to know if the Tri Wyatt in the pictures is as silly as my Tri Wyatt?

  • My dog had a Spinal injury!!!!
    PunkyP Punky

So sorry to hear that you B is in such pain. My mom had a dog that slipped on a rug and injured her back so bad that she couldn't walk. When she took her to the vet, they recommended a animal chiropractor. It didn't take long before she was better.

  • Might be bringing home 2nd B!!
    PunkyP Punky

    @DiegosMom:

lol i know! i think they have some sort of power over us.. i wish i could just keep adding them!! i cant wait for number 2!

After I got my 2nd B, I swore I would volunutarily ban myself from looking at the BRAT website, but wound up volunteering for BRAT instead:p I think they have some sort of Basenji hypnotic powers on that site.

  • "Catching" food.
    PunkyP Punky

Not only does Wyatt not catch, he will be in such a hurry to take his treat and run, that he will bite the treat but not actually take it. He then will turn around and run and go to drop the treat to inspect and eat it, only then realize it is still sitting in my hand:p
