Yeah she has the thicker fuller tail like her husky side but she also was teething and it was not as curly as before. . Now that she seems to be done with that it seems to be curling up again. . Whatever is mixed with the husky side, she is definitely different and unique and quite the clown. I am forever laughing at her. She loves attention and you loving on her but can also be independent. We love this girl. .

RE: Is Nova a basenji mix?
I did one of those on our first rescue and it was way off. Her mother was a border collie and they told us she was a 3 generation pug/malamute mix and would be 45 pounds. As you could see in the picture she is only 24 pounds. And a dog geneticist showed me on their own Web page that mixture was not a possibility for Mya as she has the brown and white tri mixture. . So I don't think I will waste my money on one of those again. . We finally figured out she most likely is bc/jack Russell or rat terrier mix. . But nova we have no idea lol. We thought our American Eskimo made some strange sounds until we got this girl. .

RE: Is Nova a basenji mix?
When she does bark it's high pitched like squeaking, when she howls it's like yodeling, when she tries to growl it's like she's gargling. . Her sounds are very odd.

Hi from Indiana
Hello,
I have been reading on the Basenji as my husband and I just recently rescued a little girl that we both think she looks so much like a brindle basenji. My husband and I live in Indiana and have between 1-2 acres of property for our girls to run on in the country. We have been married for 38 years now. We rescued another little girl last year, Mya, who is a border collie/ rat terrier or jack russell cross. She has been an amazing dog so we thought we would rescue again to give her a companion. After being approved, dogs were given to younger people. We were actually looking for a border collie or border collie mix to keep up with Mya and how intelligent and energetic she is but that did not work out. It is very sad because I work full time at home and my husband is retired so we have plenty of time to give to our dogs and Mya has been very happy.
Our new girl now though is Nova. We thought she was around 3-1/2 months old but now found out she is more like 4-1/2 to 5 months as she has already lost 4 teeth. Nova is definitely a different girl. She is not much shorter than Mya already at around 17 inches (Mya is 24 pounds) but she only weighs 14 pounds. She is extremely tiny wearing an extra small collar and extra small harness. I doubt she would be full basenji because she does bark but she is otherwise very vocal too making some of the strangest sounds we have ever heard. I swear she yodels. My husband said when outside the bathroom door wanting it it sounds like she is gargling or something LOL. My husband wanted to get her off of a garage sale site from a guy who wanted to be rid of her. those dogs in Indiana a lot of times end up as bait dogs and he loved her immediately so he brought her home. That was July 3 and she was only 6 pounds then. She was a mess, flea infested, dehydrated, urinary tract infection, and we believe starving. The guy was giving her dog food big enough for a full size german shepherd. Her cage stunk so bad. She would eat and drink until she vomited. After getting the medical issues cleared up, she has been doing pretty good now. She is pretty well at potty training. Mya was a big help with that. We were told she was a husky mix but if this girl is husky she is the smallest one I have ever seen. the vet says now that medical issues are taken care of she has the best muscle tone and proportions to a dog he has ever seen. She loves to dig and definitely wants all the attention all the time. She is a fast runner because she is not much behind Mya at this young age already and Mya can easily catch a chipmunk or field mouse going across the yard. Mya and Nova have bounded together quickly. Mya pretty much acts like a surrogate mother to her. Nova is afraid of other dogs, at the vets she loves the people but if dogs are in there she pretty much clings to me until they leave.
Anyways, I have been checking out the Basenjis in case she is a mix with them to see if there is anything special I need to watch for with her. Having rescues is very rewarding but sometimes it is hard not knowing what medical issues to watch for or what to expect size wise. We thought we would have 2 medium sized girls and we are ending up with 2 medium sized girls in small packages my husband says which he loves. They are not little divas for sure.

Is Nova a basenji mix?
We rescued this beautiful little brindle girl from a guy. the pictures attached show how her colors are changing. She was a very light brindle when we got her about 2 months ago now but she her back has become much more black with the tan or reddish tan showing through now. She is a tiny girl at 3-4 months approx and only 10-12 pounds. She has gotten almost as tall as our other rescue who is around 17 inches tall and 24 pounds. She makes the strangest sounds my husband and I have ever heard out of a dog and is such a comic you cannot help but laugh at her. We would love to know what medical wise to look for.

Hi from Indiana
I am not sure I belong here but I have found the Basenjis to be fascinating dogs so far. My husband and I, married for 38 years, have recently rescued a little girl that we are almost certain is at least part Basenji. She sure looks the part and can make some of the strangest sounds we have ever heard from a dog. A guy wanted to get rid of her so my husband went and picked her up rather than letting them take her to a shelter or her end up being some bait dog which seems to happen a lot around here or mean people get them and torment them. She was quite a mess, flea infestation, urinary tract infection,, dehydrated, and we believe starving. The imbecile was feeding a puppy food big enough for a full grown german shepherd dog. After getting everything medically taken care of now she is becoming a very sweet girl but different from any other dog we have known. She is a beautiful brindle, estimating approximately 3-4 months old and probably 10-12 pounds maybe. She is very tiny built because she is not much shorter than our other rescue of almost 2 years now that is 17-18 inches tall. Mya has taken to Nova immediately and is like a surrogate mother to her. They love running and playing together. I cannot even begin to say what kinds of sounds she makes but when she tries to howl it is more like a yodel. She is terrified of other dogs right now but we do not know what happened before we got her. She loves people but scared of other dogs. She loves digging and shredding things and chewing.
We previously had 2 dogs a yorkie and an American Eskimo, we had both for 15-1/2 years and were devastated when we lost them. It was about 4 years before my husband would agree to get another one. We got Mya and she has been absolutely wonderful. She is half border collie and half either rat terrier or jack russell terrier. She is a brown or red, whichever you call it, tricolor with beautiful greenish eyes. She is super smart and energetic. Very skittish around people but loves all other dogs, and this is even though she has been through several training courses and socialized. She has done so well we were looking for another to rescue when my husband found Nova. Now we have 2 unique looking dogs that are joined at the hip that we have fallen in love with totally. Mya was different also has a lot of bc characteristics so we had to learn the best way to work with her and so now we are here trying to learn if this is what Nova may be a mix of and the best way to learn with her. We have been blessed with 2 such sweet rescues.
I would be interested in hearing what you all think of our Nova and if she is part Basenji.

Hello from Indiana
I am trying to learn all I can about Basenjis. They are beautiful. . We just rescued a beautiful brindle little girl we have named Nova. . My husband and I both feel she is at least part basenji. This little girl makes the strangest sounds we have ever heard from a dog and we had an American Eskimo for 15-1/2 years that pretty much made bear sounds. . She was a mess when we got her, fleas infested, urinary tract infection, dehydrated, and pretty much starving. A guy wanted to get rid of her so my husband brought her home. . The first few days were horrible, with her peeing everywhere but now that we have things medically under control she is blooming into this beautiful little comedian that you can't help but laugh at.
We also have another almost 2 year old rescue half border collie and half jack Russell or rat terrier mix at best guess that had been an awesome dog and has taken Nova on pretty much like a mom and they are joined at the hip pretty much. They live playing together. Our other girl is Mya and she is extremely smart. So we have 2 extremely unique looking girls that we have fallen in love with. .
