A good introduction to clicker training, along with some great advice on games to play that help you and the dog get used to it is the book "When Pigs Fly" by Jane Killion… very informative and easy read, with plenty of great advice on training "hard to train" dogs. I got it on my iPad for $9.99, but I think it's also available from DogWise for about $15 for a hard copy!

I'd recommend checking out Dr. Jean Dodd's vaccination protocol for dogs. It spaces out the vaccines relatively well, which is super important for our vaccine-reactive B's. Combo vaccines are a big no no for basenjis as many don't really handle them well! Check out the last two editions of Dogs Natrually, too… There's some really interesting info on over vaccination and timing of vaccines.

@Lisa; I don't plan on showing, but I'm sure my pup and I will visit shows often. I like the environment and the certian level of "Crazy" that I get to behold at dog shows, but I don't have the time to finish a dog, so I'd be doing the pup a dishonor by even attempting to get him show-ready. Kyle and Steve have remarked that they're going to make a handler out of me, though... so who knows! lol
After researching and listening to opinions on here/speaking with Kyle and Steve, I decided I want a male. Right now my preference is for a brindle male (though there's only one in this litter… but hopefully it's my boy!), but I'd be interested in a black and white as well (as there are no reds in this litter either). They are expecting a second litter next week, so it's possible that my pup could come from that litter as well... it's just going to depend on pick of the litter, etc. It's got me on edge now, but I know in a few weeks a decision will be made, so we'll see! Eeeeee... so excited :P

Fran, yes, this is my first Basenji, so I'm super excited. I've been enamored with the breed for a long time, but I finally made the decision to look for a puppy in October/November… it's been a lot of reading, researching, asking questions, going to dog shows, etc. but I'm so excited! These 10 weeks will end up flying by, I'm sure, then my baby and best furry friend gets to come home!

Yipee! I've finally gotten on here long enough to post a picture! The babies from Kyle and Steve's first litter are born (As of Dec. 27)… the Dapper x Bailey litter! Only one picture so far!! Check it out! So stinkin' cute! This will be a very long 10 weeks!!!

Moochie and Co. is the shop I'm referring to. They've got so many dog toys and treats, leashes and collars, and coats, oh my! It's a neat little botique, minus the tiny dust-buster dog that's constantly following you around… :P It might be where I get Azi's first Ohio State collar during football season (ya know, if the buckeyes ever turn it around)
Kim– How fun! My first experience with bailey was pretty great... I think she took to me well. After Kyle and Steve introduced me to their dogs, Bailey came over next to me on the couch and slowly did the B-Lean until she was totally against my side... it was pretty hilarious :)
Fran -- I feel your pain. I work in a mall-based store, with a pet boutique right across the hallway from us... I often just go in and think 'I could buy this now... but that might be a little obsessive' I just want to be a great dad! :P

Okay, to the very best of my knowledge, the Sire is BIF UKC Ch. & Am. DC Eldorado's Look Smart at Kaleonahe, SC (Dapper); the dam is Ch. Eldorado's Kaleonahe The Power of One (Bailey). I've been wrong before, but as I remember from my first conversation with Kyle and Steve, this is right.
Pat–I'll let them know they need to update! I couldn't agree more, as it was tough for me to tell who was breeding this season and who wasn't!
Fran--oh yes, the excitement is killing me, but it's definitely an awesome feeling knowing I'm one step closer to getting my boy! Now it's finger crossing that it's a litter full of brindle boys so I can get the one I'm looking for! I have checked OFFA on my own; both parents are probably clear for Fanconi so things look good on that front! Mine will be a companion too (though Kyle and Steve swear they're going to get me to show), but I feel better knowing the parents are solid healthwise!

Haha no, google won't return any results on the pup yet. Azikiwe will be his call name, but certainly not his AKC name. Kyle and Steve seemed to be receptive to it! I'll update later with the sire and dam information!

The peanut inside his mother's belly, Azikiwe Brandon Brunk, has my monetary commitment! I decided to go with Kyle and Steve at Kaleohane Basenjis, about half an hour north from where I live. I've been really impressed with their breadth of knowledge and their willingness to share it with me. Their dogs are beautiful, and have great temperaments to boot!
Unfortunately, the pups aren't due until Dec. 26, so it'll be a long wait until the first week of March when I can bring "Azi" home… ho hum!
Just thought the world should know I'm one step closer to sharing my life with a B! :)
