Hello fellow Basenji lovers! I have a favor to ask. My Cairo is competing for a "Pet of the Year" contest here in DFW, but we just learned the winner is chosen solely on Facebook votes. Right now she's getting her butt kicked by a few other dogs who CLEARLY AREN'T AS CUTE – LOL!!! If you have any time to spare, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/CreeksidePetCare/app_561968997176855
and vote for Cairo (she's about the 5th dog down the list). Creekside Pet Center requires you to "like" their page, but you can always "unlike" at the end of the contest. If you want to be my hero, please vote for her everyday!!!

Digging ..22 Dec 2011, 03:21If I didn't know better, I'd think I was watching a video of Cairo & Harley!!! The digging must come from some weird survival instinct the B's developed over the centuries. My son jokes that they're digging out bugs (??) Regardless of why, we get such a kick watching their spasmodic digging!

Basenji's are lake dogs? Who knew!24 Jul 2011, 16:31Prior to this posting, I was led to believe that all basenjis hated the water & swimming. Now I know it just depends on the individual basenji. I will consider myself lucky that both of mine are happy little swimmers. :)
Although I still don't understand why mine love the lake, but won't get in our pool (??) We still throw them in to cool 'em off, but they don't seem too happy about it. My husband's theory is that they don't like the pool b/c it doesn't gradually descend into deep water like the lake does.

Basenji's are lake dogs? Who knew!24 Jul 2011, 15:50Those life jackets seem to fit really well- where did you get them or who makes them?
Got them at Petsmart. We had to adjust the straps quite a bit to fit their shape. When we first put them on, all they wanted to do was chew on the buckles, but eventually they lost interest and everything's still intact.

Basenji's are lake dogs? Who knew!23 Jul 2011, 18:15That is so funny about the water skiers!!! LOL
What I still don't understand is why our B's don't (willingly) jump into our pool at home. You would think a dog would want to cool itself off when it's 100+ degrees outside!?! Lately with the scorching temps, we've been keeping them in the house with limited time in the backyard.

HELLO from Texas23 Jul 2011, 16:27Thanks, Lisa. I did join the region4lc group and have access to the event info. However, I'm not sure where to start. Do we just begin with the club practices or should we first do training on our own? We're interested in coursing and agility. Any recommendations?? Your help is appreciated!

Basenji's are lake dogs? Who knew!23 Jul 2011, 16:09During our last trip to the lake, we carried our 2 B's in the lake to cool them off (it's over 100 degrees after all!). When we let them go, we expected them to swim ashore as quickly as possible. Much to our surprise, Cairo & Harley decided to swim, swim and swim some more! We were so shocked and happy to see them enjoying the water with the rest of us! And they love boat rides, too!
We are really looking forward to our next trip with our "LAKE DOGS"! :D

HELLO from Texas19 Jul 2011, 18:48So here's a picture of my little girl holding what could be your (BaNHANerZzz's) male red/white when he was just a few weeks old! TOO CUTE, huh?!
-
HELLO from Texas19 Jul 2011, 17:24OMG, wow– we were going to adopt the red/white male originally, then at last minute got the female red/white. Reason being, we ultimately decided to adopt 2 Basenji's and were told they need to be of the opposite sex, but Brenda only had a male tri left, which forced us to change the red/white to a female.
Do you have pictures?

HELLO from Texas19 Jul 2011, 16:42Hi everyone. I am the proud owner of 2 B's: Harley (tri male) and Cairo (red/white female). We got them both from Signet Kennels in Ft. Worth, TX earlier this year. They are now 7 and 8 months-old and live with me, my husband and 3 kids.
Prior to adopting, we researched the Basenji breed so we knew what we were getting into. What I didn't know was how quickly they would steal our hearts! It's crazy, but I now cannot imagine our lives without Cairo & Harley!
Any other Basenji owners in North Texas??
