Christine, our basenji was also found in traffic (in October). Initially we didnt think we could manage her, but with the support of Basenji chat members and our local basenji rescue, we have decided that we couldnt imagine life without her. She is so full of personality and is michievious like a 2 year old. You have gotten a great gift and cant wait to hear your stories! Best Wishes!!!

RE: Help with diarrhea
If our dogs get too much canned food, loose stool is always the result. Too much dry, then its constipation. Mixing the dry with a spoonful of canned works well for us. Also, you may wanna try dry food and some canned pumpkin. Good luck

RE: Anal Gland Issues and Diet
Our vet recommended sprinkling metamucil in the food, as with our basenji, if the stool is a little too dry/not soft enough it aggravates the problem. Havent tried it yet as the canned pumpkin idea works so far.

Police call
We were at our local dog park, when a woman approached and asked "is that a Basenji?" Yes it is we answered. "I knew it!" she said. "I am a philly cop and I remember getting a call about a woman screaming in an apartment." "When my partner and I arrived, we broke the door down as we could hear the lady yelling and moaning." "We got inside only to find a basenji in a crate." Apparently some one wasnt happy!!!

RE: Update…
How old is she? Tell us more about her. She is so cute!
When we got her (late Oct 2006) the vet thought she was 9-12 mos based on teeth. Over the months she has been getting more spots on her belly. Dont know if that gives any sign of age or not. She seems smaller than some of the Basenjis on this site. She is very thin and muscular. Is there a difference between sizes Male vs females? Could she have been a runt?

RE: Update…
I have to think that someone is missing their dog?
How could anyone abandon such a great dog. I just can't see it.
I can believe that it got loose ands got lost.
My sister in law's miniture Greyhound ran away and someone found her really far away after two weeks!
We tried for months to find her owners but no one ever claimed her through the local SPCA's, and petfinder.com. Thanks to this site and member support, we learned to understand her quirks and we are now hooked on Basenjis. It took awhile and we were also in contact with our local Basenji rescue as we didnt think we could handle her. She's a keeper though and we are blessed. She loves our other dog and gets along great with the cats. She goes on vacation with us and sleeps in our bed. She is very smart and full of personality.

RE: Peeing in the Rain
My basenji, Kaya, refuses to go out when it is raining or if there is too much snow. We have used large puppy training pads very successfully. I put her on the leash and walk her to the pad by the door and say "hurry up" like I do when she's outside. Now I dont even have to put her on the leash, she just does her business on the pads and since they have leak proof bottoms, there's no mess on the rug, unless she misses which is rare. I dont know how this would work for a dog that doesnt squat when it pees though.
We are having a problem now because we just had a beach vacation and she enjoyed going in the sand on the dog friendly beach. She's been resistant to going in the grass now so I am considering a small sand pit in the corner of my yard. Right now she goes under a pine tree. Anything to keep her from going on my clothes like she used to!!

Update…
Well….some of you may have read my moms post about our basenji named Kaya. We got her as a rescue type thing. She was found running around in a busy area outside of Philadelphia. We ended up with her becuase i was sent to look at her and was given the option to take her if i thought she would be good for us. I honestly had no idea what kind of dog she was but i thought she was adorable. Sooo i took her. Ive been in love with her ever since. She is a great dog with TONS of personality. i take so many pictures of her and i am finally going to post some... enjoy
