Wanted to update this thread in case others see it. It was nice meeting you at the fun match! I look forward to doing a B play date. Let me know when you schedule something. Hopefully other friends from the match can join. Is there a dog park near you?

RE: Hello all!
Welcome. She is so cute.
I can tell you with no doubts, my B has made me a better person. For all the stress that comes with being responsible for a living thing he gives so much back to our family.
Enjoy!!! -
RE: Reintroducing my B to a dog he has gotten aggressive with
I just wanted to follow up here. Kongo and Mia met again last night. Kongo and I went over to Mia's house. I know this is against some of the advice here but I really felt strongly that this could be overcome. First we let Kongo in the house without Mia and he sniffed all around. Then we had Mia down on the ground on her back getting belly rubs and Kongo was able to come over and meet her with her in the vulnerable spot. They took about 10 minutes of wandering the house together but with distance before they started to warm up. By the end of the night they were hunting together outside and sitting right next to each other on the porch.
We are going to walk them together this coming week so that they have fun outside together but not play fighting.
Things are looking much better. -
RE: Reintroducing my B to a dog he has gotten aggressive with
Thank you. I will try the walk idea. Last night they were outside when they met but the other dogs were there. A walk by themselves may be good.
I got the sniffing idea from watching the dog whisperer. It was a show on introducing dogs and they showed the one dog sitting and allowing the other dog to sniff them first. I just figured I'd try it but it didn't work. -
Reintroducing my B to a dog he has gotten aggressive with
Kongo is 11 months old. He LOVES to play with the other dogs in our neighborhood. He sometimes shows a little aggression at first but after a few seconds he backs down and most of the time lets the other dog be the alpha by laying down on his back in front of them. We have a neighbor with a 3 year old dog. Her name is Mia. She is a mix of some type most likely in the hound family but she is about 3 times the size of Kongo. The first time they played they got along great. The second time he went up to steal a toy from her in her house and she jumped on top of him and got snappy. Last night they met again and this time she wanted to play and Kongo kept barking (yea, they aren't supposed to do that right?) and attacking her whenever she came near.
I really want them to become friends because having the dogs all play together has been one of the best things ever. I want to reintroduce them and see if they can work it out but I want to make sure I do everything I can to make it a positive experience. I know it should be just the two of them and not with the other 5 dogs around. I know to try and get him to let her sniff him. I tried to have him sit facing me and allow her to sniff him but he kept turning around and lunging at her.
I'll take any ideas.
Thank you as always! -
Strange Digging
I have heard of dogs digging in the yard or digging on their beds but has anyone had their B try to dig through their body? It just started this past week. I have been laying on the couch on my side and my boy will come up and try to dig to china through my bum. Very strange. He doesn't do this to my husband. I'm the special one.
Then again, he doesn't use my head as his personal salt lick. I guess that is my husband's treat for shaving his head. -
RE: Need stories or anecdotes about responsible breeders
Tad Brooks from Meisterhaus in KY
He didn't help me once, he helps me all the time. He stays in touch with me providing me guidance and training mentoring. If Kongo is acting strange I reach out to Tad before my vet. Every time I look at Kongo I see Tad's intelligence, hard work, and caring. -
RE: Lela and Binti on the road
It looks like they had a great time. Thank you for sharing!

RE: Finally had enough…
Kongo had giardia as a pup and had problems with diarrhea. I used to take him out on the regular without prompting. We have a bell by the door that we have been trying to get him to use. He doesn't ring it. He jumps on the door. I help him ring the bell before I open the door in hopes that one day he will get it.
I stopped taking him out every few hours and he was used to going outside so I think that is why he let me know by going to the door. I don't know if you do this or not, but I have been told that you shouldn't go back inside right after they use the bathroom, which is easy to do if they take forever to go in the first place. They said that if your B knows they go inside after they pee that they will hold it on purpose to stay outside longer.
Good luck! -
Facebook Basenji Page
I posted this on another thread also but wanted to make sure you saw it.
I started a facebook page to post all things Kongo and other happy news. Please feel free to share your B's stories and photos on my page.
www.facebook.com/baltimorebasenjimy hopes are to meet a ton of basenji owners. I haven't met another owner in Maryland. It would be great for Kongo to have a B playmate.

RE: Hello from Baltimore
Update. I started a multi-purpose facebook page. I wanted to post things about Kongo and also share happy/odd news. Hoping to find tons of Basenji owners. It would be great to find some in the area as well so that Kongo could have a B playmate. Check out our page

RE: Longing for a tail wag
I just watched over a Wheaten terrier for the weekend. Totally made me appreciate my Kongo's silence. The Terrier was a pleasure to watch, he really is a great dog. I know he wouldn't typically be classified as a loud dog or overly hairy but compared to my boy he was both. Not to mention the wet beard of drool that constantly showered the house as they played. Other dogs are nice but nothing compares to a Basenji.
I think I like that he hasn't found his yodel yet and it no longer makes me upset that he doesn't wag his tail. He cuddles next to me without soaking my clothes and that is good for me. -
RE: FL-Gainesville-Female PB-On Craigslist
I emailed her. Looks like a mix to me. Beautiful dog though. She said she was given the dog for free. Didn't mention the age. Not Fanconi tested.

Shout out for my breeder in Louisville KY. I LOVE HIM!!!
If you are looking to add a Basenji or a Whippet to your home I highly recommend Tad Brooks from Meisterhaus breeders in KY.
I live in Baltimore, MD and I researched breeders up and down the east coast and mid west. I wanted a tri and I wanted to know that he came from a loving environment and a healthy bloodline. Tad has been raising basenjis since he was 11 years old. He is knowledgeable and caring.
Tad has been an amazing addition to our family circuit. He answered all of my questions before I made my decision on a breeder. His application was detailed and asked a lot of really great questions. It was obvious he cares about where his puppies land.
When Kongo was 11 weeks old my boyfriend flew to KY to pick him up. Tad met him at the airport and sent Kongo off with a blanket and toy from his puppy home. We could not be happier parents. Kongo has such a great personality. I was prepared for a dog that would take a lot of stressful training and tough love. He has been so easy compared to some of the stories I hear. I know a lot of that has to do with his first 11 weeks.
Tad has remained very involved in Kongo's life. I do not know how he manages it with constant shows and batches of puppies but he is always there when we need him. No question is to small or silly.
I said I only wanted one dog but now that Kongo is so wonderful I know that somewhere down the line I will have more. I will be getting them from Meisterhaus and no where else.

RE: Longing for a tail wag
Thank you all for making me feel better. I'll just enjoy when he wags for others. It is cute even if it isn't directed toward me.

Longing for a tail wag
Kongo is a wonderful puppy of 5 months. He is a total cuddle monster after the crazies. We just left him for the first time this weekend for one night and we were really hoping to be greeted with loving tail wags. He wags his tail for most every visitor, other dogs on walks, strangers on the street but he has never wagged his tail for us. Is this normal? We are starting to get a complex about it. We can tell he loves us. He follows us around the house and won't sleep any where but right between us. We wonder why we don't get the normal doggie sign of happy.
