RE: Geriatric Basenji
Thank you for all the replies. She is doing a lot better. I started giving her glucosamine (500 mg) and it seems to be helping. She hasn't fallen today at all and is acting more like her old self. It's also a lot warmer than the sub zero temps we had last week. Don't know if that had anything to do with it, but she seems lots better.

Geriatric Basenji
I have a female basenji who has slowed down a lot in the last several years and is also deaf. This winter she seems to be having weakness in her back legs and sometimes falls down the stairs when going off the porch. Is this a normal progression of aging or is their something I need to do. She is 15 years old. I do plan on calling the vet on Monday, but wondered what your input would be.

RE: HELP!! Does Jack Need to go to the Em. Vet?!!!
What happened??? Did you take Jack to the VEt? Is he OK????
This happened w/ our B after she licked my husbands strawberry shortcake bowl. Benedryl did the trick, but we started it early. -
RE: "Catching" food.
Catching food is REALLY beneath a Basenji. They have far too much class to play silly DOG games.

RE: Winter exercise???
Yes, these WI winters are the pits! We have a 14 year old B girl and she hates being out in the cold. We put a sweater (or two, depending on the temp) on her. She does have fabric boots which she will wear. She tends to loose them, so I have to watch. The other thing I might mention is the SALT. I think that hurts their feet the most because the melting ice is colder and sticks to her feet. After a snow, I always carry my dog across the street to lessen the contact w/ salt. Some people put it on their sidewalks and I'll pick her up and carry her til we're past. This seems to help her feet alot. She will tolerate the cold, but if the feet go, it's all over. She gets less exercise in the winter, but it doesn't seem to effect her. If she seems a bit "depressed" we just give her more attention or play time.

RE: B's and Cold…
We put a coat on our B. When it gets really cold, we add a sweater underneath. She doesn't complain too much unless she gets road salt between her pads. Then we have to pick her up and carry her. If the salt trucks have been out, I pick her up before crossing the road.
My husband says he wouldn't want another basenji because of the WI winters making her so miserable. I say "It's only 3 months and they are such a joy"

RE: New Member
Thanks for your replies. I've started giving Sonia Glucosamine w/ MSM every day and we'll see how she does. I'll give you an update in about a month and let you know if it's helped or not.

Hi! This is my first post and I must say this is an interesting web site. I have a red & white female(Sonia) Basenji who is almost 14 years old. She is a doll and we love her dearly. It's hard to see her get old and not quite as active. She is also pretty deaf, which is hard for all of us. We use hand signals for her when we can get her attention, but she often doesn't hear us to know to look. The Vet says there is nothing "wrong" that it is just a part of getting old.
Does anyone every tried Glucosamine for Basenji arthritis symptoms? Has it helped and what is the dosage that you have given. Sonia weighs about 22 pounds. She has been having trouble going up the stairs and jumping onto the bed when it's time to go nitey night.
Well, I have to go nitey night, too, so I'll sign off. Hopefully I'll get some replies.
