I was just going to relate our summer season but decided not to relive my month in an insane asylum It was a month of pure unadulterated hell. Brother and sister, so obviously I had eyeballs on them 24 /7. Crates not doable, he tried to chew thru and rip them apart. Screaming as only basenjis-can. Hour upon hour, no eating and little drinking, another concern. Both lost weight. Everything else was horrible, 4 weeks later all done. Back to normal .sanity restored...somebody is going to get fixed.

RE: Where can I get the "How To Be A Basenji" manual written in Basenji?
-
RE: Sneezing, snoring, sniffing loudly
I have recently read that there are a number of grasses and weed that have seeds that cling. Fox grass being one of them. Dogs snuffle and inhale seeds and they sometimes get stuck inside the nose and throat causing such symptoms. Make sure vet gives a close check of interior of nose. Can cause inflammation . Wish i could remember the article but this is all i recall.

RE: Basenji breeders in Ireland and UK
You did not do your homework with your malinois . You could have spared yourself, your friends and most of all your dog. A brilliant animal with certain characteristics, most of which not suitable for apartment dwelling. A Shepherd,, then a herder, then a working dog, i.e. a police canine. After the biting incident with friends, you and the dog should have gone to a trainer, a behavior professional someone with the intelligence enough to tell you you have probably chosen the wrong breed. Have you had close personal time with basenjis and their owners. How much do you really understand about the breed. Do you know they are a primitive breed only in the Civilized world less then 100 years. Do you know why the majority of owners do not let them off leash unless they are in a safe area. Do you understand that a basenji must never be struck, even gently, when disciplining them. Did you ever hear a basenji when it is upset or lonely. Do you know how long they can scream if unhappy. I may sound harsh but my first experience with a basenji..started with police at my door, neighbor complaining when i was not home. Then a completely destroyed screened summer, porch, and then destroyed living room, including drapes chairs and carpeting because i had to leave for a couple of hours with him in a large kitchen, gated. Which he climbed. Eventually i had to give him up to a shelter. That was 35 years ago, 20 yrs later i tried again, after doing due diligence. And now have learned to love and understand basenjis with all my heart and mind. You probably will not find a puppy this year, but you can get on a breeders list for next year. Gives you sufficient time to educate yourself and make a happy life for you and your, dog.

RE: Basenji + Terrier?
Portugese podingo...i think it is called, smaller than a basenji, wire hair or smooth. Yours looks like the wirehair.
I have seen them at dog shows, look it up it is very similar -
RE: Please help!
Dexen. Your language only shows your lack of understanding the english language. Please refrain from spilling filth on the board. It really isn't necessary. Nancy your response was also uncalled for. This person is asking for assistance. Needing only help in rethinking her expectations from her puppy. Indeed she seems to be comparing last dog to basenji. Anyone who really cares about basenjis , understands the new comer to be exasperated with a puppy. To suggest she lacks love is so out of line. What she lacks is understanding of our breed. There is more than sufficient nastiness in the world today without adding to it with vile language and accusations. I suggest both of you retire from the conversation and allow those who maybe able to help be heard

RE: Making The Tough Decision
When your heart is broken
In a million pieces
And you have no tears left to cry
You lay your hand
Upon his head
And whisper in his ear
Of times and fun gone by
The pain is over whelming
As you do what must be done
Remember as he lies so still
That his last race is won. -
RE: Should I get a Basenji?
Emmet..
if you are, still there...I HAVE ONLY ONE recommendation...find a Corgi breeder, a first or last time dog...play mate loyal, eager to learn anything. Trust worthy honest pal. I have owned basenjis for 35 years but have had corgis in my life. The only problem is hair but a good brushing a couple times a week....problem solved.

RE: Teaching my guy to signal
5 basenjis later......a christmas bell about the size of tennis ball. One door all the time, hang on door knob low enough for paw and nose to reach easily. EVERY time you go out, ring the bell, hold puppy paw and tap bell, or nudge puppy nose to make bell ring. Eventually puppy will realize..ring this thing and I get to go out this door....down the road you my get ring just because....but let them out anyhow. Bell is portable good for visits and motels. Good luck

RE: Best Airline to Travel with Basenji
We used delta ..new jersey to detroit, sherpa bag. Was just great. On my lap the whole way...not allowed to take him out ANY where in airport. There was a potty station available for service dogs and pets, very small but useful. Sherpa allows you to see,pup at all times. I flew with my hand in side sherpa and had absolutely no problem. He slept most of the way.

RE: Should i go for a Basenji (I do want one)?
My dear, you do sound as if you live in the land of Oz. Please for your sake and the sake of a basenji, do not do it. I assume. 3rd fl walk up has other occupants. Have you ever heard an unhappy basenji...scream. You will have land lord and possibly law enforcement knocking on your door if you leave a young basenji alone for the time you are talking about in or out of a crate. Balcony....everyone is trying to be polite in their answers but i cannot. You are inviting disaster. I have been exactly where you Re and let me list the problems. Police at my door twice because i kept saying i have a basenji...it can not be mine making the noise. A screened in porch, with shards of screen and and no door, oops found it on the side of the house. Third time is the charm...drapes and venetian blinds, entire side of an upholstered chair, woodwork, edge of stair case. By then i thought a muzzle if I had to go out. Nope, muzzle was in three pieces. Poor sweet little guy was shuffled off to a rescue.....this all happened years and years ago. I still feel guilty..i am sorry if I offend but someone has to say it. To many basenjis needing rehoming and are just being put down for behaviors. over the years paid my dues with two rescues to make up for my mistakes, 5 others have helped me get over my uneducated stupidity.

RE: Is a small studio apartment good for a Basenji?
No. Please get a cat, bird, mouse or something. A basenji will not thrive and neither will you

RE: Two from the same litter?
Two rescue sisters....after 5 yrs with us, and never a mohawk between them. I came home to blood all over the porch and punctures all over each one. A year or so later. On the couch next to me and it happened again, however this time i tried to intervene...not a good idea, neither one had, punctures, but I did. Word to the wise never try to separate them, intervene with pillow..cushion, or water, not your hands. Other wise for the next 5 yrs, they slept together ate together and played together. I will never know what triggered. I think the first time was over food but the second time..
No ideaWe now have a boy and girl, litter mates 2 yrs old. Lots of rough house but never a mohawk. But I have eyes on all the time. When she is in season our live are literally hell , but no violence.

RE: Anybody Rescue?
Dont leave....you will be loosing the best place for good info. The old adage about one rotten apple in a barrel does not apply. May i suggest you simply delete the person who has offended you.don't bother to read any messages from anyone who wishes to cause you concern. The problem with those folks is they think unkindly about themselves and some how being Unkind. Makes them feel superior to others. You will be needing advice from others with your new love for
our breed is different in so many ways. How rewarding to have found a bit of trust. There will be more milestones to be celebrated. Good luck. -
RE: Odd Noises Before Sleep
It is one of very many weird sweet strange noises in your future. Our latest ,at 18 weeks is a baroo greeting made when holding a ring bone in his:mouth, not only strange sound but funny as can be watching him trying to say..great to have you home but i am not putting down my bony.

RE: To keep or not to keep?
Just as an aside. Everything i have read about basenjis in africa has said that they are treated as great treasures. They live, sleep and eat in the homes of the natives. They are excellent hunters and honored in the family. When some breeders went to Africa they found natives reluctant to sell their animals and were costly when they agreed to sell. A basenji is often in the bride price. After thousands of years being treated as family it is not unreasonable to think they were bred for this attribute. Therefore being a totally out door dog is not in puppys best interest nor yours. I have had dogs all my life and have not found one as destructive and difficult to train as our dear basenjis can be, if bored or discontented. You do her nor yourself , no favors to keep her under those circumstances. Just saying...

RE: New Basenji in the hood
I do not understand your message. You found a basenji, reunited it with its home. Want to know if any one knows it or can put you in touch with owner. Just a little bit confusing.

RE: I wanted to share some pics of my Shango since I've been a lurker for a while.
Just go to safari and “ singing basenjis”. Lots of singers must turn up the sound a little.

Toenails...boy vs. girl
I have a brother and sister, same litter, 2 yrs old. His nails need clipping once every two months, hers minimum every two weeks. His are perfect show dog trim, no resistance at all. Hers are long, she is resistance, and i cant get them anywhere near as short as his without nicking the quick. They both are great lovers of philly cheese and ir makes it much easier for us to smear some where she can reach without squirming. He just sits and lets me do it. Been doing this for 30 yrs. but i have never seen nails grow as quickly as hers. I have been told the difference is hormones...?

RE: Bumps on puppy's back?
Well.....were it me, i would either select another puppy and go directly to a vet. How old is puppy? If it is under 12 weeks, I would go directly home empty handed. Does the breeder seem to be brushing you off, have they volunteered to take puppy to vet. Are they charging you under 1000? If you can answer any of these questions yes no yes. Go home without a puppy. You are risking up to 17 years of your life . It could be an allergy, so you could count on a few thousand, dollars, and a life of unhappiness. It,could be an infestation of some, sort of bug, it could be just a momentary skin condition or somethin g it will have for the rest f its life. Private message one of,the breeders you have queried on this board and tell them the name of the breeder. Perhaps they have info on the seller. dont let your, heart make the decision for you. Good luck
