Rare Breed! HUH?19 Feb 2009, 19:08Seems like more folks are breeding for looks only and trying to find the "next new designer breed." It's sad when so many dogs, mixed and purebreds, are looking for homes. I'm happy to say my Basenji/Whippet mix came from a local "kill" shelter.

Hi from ouest africa19 Feb 2009, 19:05Hello and welcome to the forum. I just recently watched a program on Benin… I think it was one of Rick Steve's shows on PBS. Is Benin on what they call the slave coast??

Rare Breed! HUH?18 Feb 2009, 21:11Have you ever heard of a bullador?? I ran into a guy that told me he paid nearly $5,000 for one… a lab mixed with a english bulldog.... he stated that the pregnancy normally has to be helped along (artificial insemination?) and that 10 of the 14 pups were stillborn... that's just crazy and doesn't sound natural.

Sleeping In Bed?6 Feb 2009, 21:29Hollie has slept in the bed since the first night she came home from the shelter. We definately don't need the electric blanket in the winter… just her!!

I FINALLY know what Hollie is!!6 Feb 2009, 21:26I've had Hollie for 3 1/2 years now. She is a Basenji mixed with Whippet. This I have know for a while…. What I didn't now was that this type of mix was called a Lurcher (also known as a longdog).
I'm sure alot of you know what they are, but it was new to me. A Lurcher is derived from sighthound crosses and is bred to hunt a specific type of game.
I always knew Hollie was a double sighthound, but I didn't know there was a specific name for this kind of cross.
I've learned something new!! :D

My B almost died last night, and I didn't know what to do…..18 Sept 2008, 20:32Pet First Aid/CPR is usually offered by your local Red Cross. I took it a little over a year ago. It is well worth taking.

Basenji Playdates East TN ???29 Aug 2008, 19:18I haven't posted much here for a while, but I am still looking for Basenji/Basenji mixes for playdates. I know there are some in Knoxville, where we are, but so far, no playdates have been arranged.
My Basenji is mixed with Whippet, so she's fast and an avid HUNTER!!!
Is there anyone in East TN with a Basenji/Basenji mix that would like to meet for playdates??

Basenji boy for sale in East TN22 Aug 2008, 18:46Marilyn, I am also in Knoxville, TN and we tried to get this boy into BRAT from the original elderly owners, but they would not release him to BRAT… sad that he had to go through sooo many homes that obviously didn't understand basenji behavior. Is he still in the Knoxville/East TN area?? Do you have Basenjis in East Tn that might like to have a playdate?? I have only run into a few Bs here and have been unable to do form a group... which I would love to do!!!

A special 'dog forrest'14 Aug 2008, 16:18KiroGurl, you may have to start an organization to push for the development of dog parks in your city/county. Here in Knoxville, TN we use to have 0 dog parks. We now have two with two more in the planning stages. A young lady that moved here from ??? started a group, went to the city and pushed until she at least got the land provided for a dog park. IN the beginning the volunteers with the group had to do the upkeep (mowing, garbarge removal {and we know what dogs leave as garbage - don't we} etc.). Now the city does the upkeep and the parks are very popular. One of our two current dog parks is at PetSafe Village and the owner of that company donated $500,000 for the development of more dog parks in Knoxville/Knox County!! Thank dog for him!!! There is a story in the August issue of Southern Living on PetSafe Village.
