Let us know how you go. He looks like a real little battler. Would be brilliant to hear a happy ending to his story.

RE: Tri-colored basenji
OMG That poor little dog, Amazing to see he still maintains that perky little basenji stance even after obviously suffering a huge trauma. I can't even imagine what sort of abuse could cause such massive scarring. It would be great to see him go to a good home.

RE: Yard escapes
HA HA , we don't get snow at all anywhere within about 2000 kilmetres of us, in fact I have never even seen snow apart from in pictures. Christmas time is always very hot and Christmas lunch usually comprises of lots of salads and stuff instead of turkey so your story seemed extra funny to me. However I would definately be tempted to start making snowballs from the snow she is donating to you and throwing them back at her! How rude I think!

RE: "Catching" food.
I have been told that some dogs eyes are set too far forward in the heads and they have trouble focusing on the food as it comes towards them. This is what I was told with my dobermanns anyway. One of my Dobes used to catch quite well however so that ruined that theory. However I did find if I threw a ball for them they seemed to lose track of it in the air and only went after it if it bounced to give them a chance to notice where it went. But usually just stared at my hand to say.."wow, how did you make it disappear like that???"
Our kelpie used to balance a biscuit on his nose and then when told it was "OK" he would flip it up into the air and catch it. So clever!
If they have a rope toy or something easy to catch then it might be worth starting with that and give a reward when caught and then progress to catching food when they have the general idea.

RE: A names
My dobermanns name was Farosken Skye Quest but her mothers name was "Ashkenasy ize Amazing" so I named her "Ashka" …theres another A name for your list,
All her pups I named after gods and goddesses of Mythology but all had Asche (German for Ashes) as a first name so they had names like Asche Lucretia, Asche Romulus, Asche Horatius etc -

RE: Brand New Puppy… HELP!?!
Yeah this one is really confusing and to make matters worse if you do an online search on "garlic" and "dogs" you get just as many hits on it being good for dogs as you do for it being bad. I was always lead to believe the "garlic deters fleas" remedy but now maybe "Better safe than sorry" and they can go without.

RE: Dog Whisperer
I read somewhere recently "The quickest way to get your childs attention, is to talk quietly….to someone else" I guess this must work for basenji's too lol

RE: Photography
Yeah Monty is pretty special. That first picture was taken when we were spraying him with water. He just loves getting wet!
Here he is with his girlfriend "Charlotte". They look a bit scruffy when they are wet!:)

RE: Brand New Puppy… HELP!?!
Hi, Being an Aussie myself I realise the importance of BBQ's !! and don't see why he shouldnt have a little bit of Chicken cooked especially just for him or maybe buy some chicken mince and make a little patty from it with no seasonings of course. But just one little word of caution would be to make sure you guests are aware of the trouble you have gone to by making his own special treat. As a typical Aussie BBQ usually involves way too much meat for everyone to eat and there are usually dogs at every BBQ so people are often in the habit of chucking the poor "starving" creatures the odd snag (sausage) etc without thinking too much of it. This quickly develops into a dog that expects food from the BBQ and will hang around with those big puppy dog eyes begging for a scrap. Or even worse trying to steal something off the hotplate and burning his paws. So just let your guests know not to feed him and you should be fine.
One more thing…make sure you have a good fat collector under the BBQ to catch the drippings as dogs just love to get under there and lick up all that fat and oil and apart from it probably being too rich and not good for a pup it might also be too hot as well.
Also watch out for people putting drinks down by their chairs as an inquisitive pup can go unnoticed under the chairs and tables and help himself to a beer or two. Its certainly be known to happen. -
RE: Basenjis: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual by Mary Lou Kenworthy
Unfortunately our local bookshop couldn't get the one by MaryLou kenworthy so I have ordered THE COMPLETE BASENJI by Elspet Ford, which is about $45 AUD instead. Hopefully this one will be OK.
I will have to keep searching for the other or try to order it from the US. I just hate having to do that Money exchange thing thoughIts so much harder to get stuff over here in Oz sometimes.

RE: Basenjis: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual by Mary Lou Kenworthy
Just came across this list online.
Hopefully the owner won't mind me posting the link here but if you are looking for Basenji books here is a list of just about every one ever printed! There are soooo many I was really surprised. Of course some may be out of print and others are published within clubs etc so may be hard to find.

RE: G'day from Oz
Thanks Pat, Its always a good sign when people are so helpful and willing to send you information about their dogs. Even without visiting Davina I am already sure she is a fine breeder and you've confimed it for me! My originally intentions of waiting a year are getting harder and harder to stick to. If only we had moved already! Well there is still hope she may still have some pups when I am ready or I will just have to be patient until next year. I would rather wait for her next litter now that I have heard such good reports than go to someone i didnt know much about.

RE: G'day from Oz
I haven't visited yet, hopefully we can make a trip up there soon.
Kanibaru Basinji's are in Perth, Western Australia
They seem really nice and helpful too -
RE: G'day from Oz
Thanks for the welcome everyone!
I have been talking to a good breeder about 4 hours drive from where I live and she curently has two litters which I hope to go and visit. However I might decide to wait until next breeding season as we are moving to a farm sometime before christmas and feel it would probably be better to wait until after the move before bringing home a puppy, mainly because the farmhouse will be more suitable for an indoor dog than the house we are in at the moment. As much as I would just love to race out and get a puppy today especially if I went to look at some pups. How will I resist!!!!
Especially after the breeder emailed me a fact sheet on the breed which just made me want one even more.
I am not good with temptation!Jen

G'day from Oz
Hi everyone,
Just a quick intro…Haven't had a chance to look around yet but thought I would say G'day first.I don't yet own a Basenji and have always had Dobermanns but my old dobe has now gone "chasing rabbits" so to speak and I have been contemplating what sort of dog I would like to be owned by next. I was fascinated with Basenji's from the first time I ever saw one at about the age of 8!
They do seem to have attracted some bad publicity over the years unfortunately and I would appreciate reading about all the good things there are to know about this beautiful breed. And what better place to find out all about them than a place like this!
So I will be off to look around your forum with the expectation that you will all tell me just how wonderful they can be.
Looking forward to getting to chat to you
Jen
