The fire place has to be on for izzy all winter or he will do naughty things till he gets his way. Sometimes that isn't enough he is asking my husband to lay his blanket out in front of the fireplace.

RE: Introducing our Basenji to our brand new baby girl in a few days, looking for advice!
When my daughter was pregnant she would stop by once a week and Izzy would always sniff her all over , most of all her stomach and around that area, her husband was afraid of Izzy being around the baby when he came , because Izzy is not a real friendly basenji especially to my son in law. Izzy has never had any aggression toward my grandson, my grandson is 7 now and Izzy is always there to protect him, when the grandson goes down the stairs Izzy is just one step in front of him like he is protecting him from falling. I don't know about other basenjis but Izzy loves kids, but not a lot of adults.

RE: Our B's Non-Negotiable Quirks
Izzy has a set bedtime in his head, about 8:00 pm if i'm not getting the bed time treat out he gets very agitated, so he starts throwing things on the floor off the tables, he used to tear my big floor plant up . so for his safety and the safety of the plant i had to cut the bottom out of a wire clothes hamper and put it over the bottom part of the plant, so he couldn't get to it. That fixed that , but he still throws things off the tables. : )

My fur kids
I have been a member here for several yrs. thought maybe I would try downloading a few pics. I hope they go through , the first is of my Izzy he is now 7 yrs old. The second is of his little sister Moxie she is going on 2 and a half I believe. She is a rescue ,and in the last pic you can see she is not so much a little sister, but they love each other anyway. Of course even with the difference in size Izzy still rules the roost.

RE: My dog snuck out the front door off leash tonight.
We made a lot of changes in our home when we got our Basenji , we have a heavy wood trash container that can not be knocked over, we have 4 dog gates in our house, one about four feet from the front door which keeps him from making mad dashes out the door. We keep all small breakable things out of reach, cause he will break what he can get to. Having our basenji is like having a never ending 2 or 3 year old child , but that is just what you do when you cherish something. You take care of it as best you can.

RE: (Vengeful?) Pottying On The Couch!
My B does things out of spite all the time, he knows what he is doing cause he goes for the things he knows upsets me when he does it. Like scratching my antique footstool, tearing leaves off my bagonia, which i have to have a fence around now. Pulling plastic bags out of the bag basket, throwing coasters off the table next to my husbands chair. I could go on but then you say they don't do things for spite. Oh there is one more thing that is kinda funny he shuts the basement gate on his fur sister so she can't get upstairs.

RE: Possible allergies?
could there be something stuck in his neck, Izzy got a rose thorn that scratched his neck and irritated it inside so he was scratching on the outside. Vet gave him some meds to get rid of the irritation inside and he quit scratching the outside.

RE: Vet crisis
My Izzy doesn't like extended hands coming from any direction, before he accepts any one he has to get in there face and smell there breath, scares me to death but no biting has happened this way yet. When people extend there hand in any way he thinks that is the message to bite. Of course we do not let him get in complete strangers faces, we don't want to set ourselves up for a law suit

RE: Driving/travel Issues
i have a screamer , he hops in the car just fine but once it starts going he starts screaming. I believe it was from a very bad experience at a Vets office which we do not go to anymore, but the screaming still starts as soon as the car moves out of the driveway.

RE: Night time/ sleep aggression in our 18 month old female basenji
I think BRAT basenji rescue calls this waking up grouchy when they list a dog they always say if it wakes up grouchy or not. I know Izzy does, I think sometimes they just like that warm spot you left them, and they don't want to give it up ; )

RE: Help! Puppy that screams in the car..
My basenji is 8yrs and still screams when we go in the car because he had a very bad experience at a vets. When I first took him there I didn't know that the vet tech there hated basenjis and when we would go he would get so upset the whites of his eyes would turn blood red. We have been going to a different vet now for some time , but he still screams all the way there. On the trip home he is perfect. So hopefully your pup don't associate car rides with a bad experience.

RE: New to Forum and a wishful Bansenji owner
Webmed has a good article on allergies to dogs and what causes them and it does include dog saliva. Anyone interested may want to look it up. They have a wide range of things that causes allergies from the dog. Be sure u read the WEBMED I thought it had the best information.

RE: My vet says my puppy is too aggressive
Don't walk!!!Run from that vet as soon as possible. I had the very same experience with a vet. Her Vet tech hated basenjis and I learned that to late. Because of something they did when I took him in to get him neutered, he has never been the same. They caused him to be very mistrustful of everyone. The last visit I took him to they ask me to muzzle him. He was so scared he got his muzzle off and they were both standing against a wall like he was going to attack them, when actually he just wanted to get away from them. When I tried to get the muzzle back on , I went home with a busted lip and bruises and scratches all over . Needless to say I never went back , but my daughter and husband took there little fufu dogs there and during a visit she told him Izzy was vicious and unpredictable. So the son in law didn't want him anywhere near there son. It caused real turmoil in my family. The new vet he has had for several years is fine with him, I have to muzzle him when we go in but the vet takes the time that he needs to get acquainted each time and then the vet takes the muzzle off and does what he needs to for the checkup. I wanted a basenji since I was 9 yrs old and finally got one in my 60s and the first vet ruined the whole experience for me. At my age I will not get the chance to try again. I have lived with anxiety every time we have company, fearing of him biting someone. You don't live in Nebraska, USA do you sounds all so familiar. Good luck in what you decide

RE: Koa , my best basenji
I have the movie , I saw it when I was 9 that's when I decided I needed to have a basenji some day. It was a bit of a tear jerker. When I told my girls about it they bought me the movie. Your basenji looks just like my Izzy. Sorry for your loss.

RE: Sneezing, snoring, sniffing loudly
Our purebred basenji sneezes at us when he gets upset with us. That is the only time he does it though.
