As far as salmonella is concerned, you are more likely to get it from spinach than the raw chicken, or any other meats. (It can also be in processed dog food). I also asked my vet when was the last time they treated a dog for salmonella and they couldn't give me an answer. All of my dogs good is human grade from the market . I'm very thorough with my clean up, and he never eats in the house. Outside on the deck or in the garage if the weather is bad.
Again, it works for me and others would disagree and that's ok.

The bones in chicken feet are easy enough for a Basenji to crunch through. Mine loves them. He's been on a raw diet since I brought him home a year and a half ago. I include them in his diet as part of his meals and an occasional snack. Again, they are high in glucosamine and chondroitin, which are good for the joints. This is just a suggestion.

As many have said, the vet visit should be first. If you are considering the glucosamine and chondroitin route, try raw chicken feet as a snack here and there. As opposed to getting it from China, you can pick up chicken feet from the grocery store for a relatively low price......just a thought. Hope all is well with your B.

Found this thread and figured I would respond. I have an almost 1yr old Male (27 November) and would be interested in meeting up with other Basenji owners and their dogs. I live near Quantico and quite honestly don't see any other Basenjis ever. Will drive to most parks in the NOVA area.

I have a 25lb Male who will be 1yr on the 27th. I don't plan on getting him neutered. I will not be breeding him either. He is a house dog and is always on a leash when outside. I see no need for neutering from that standpoint. He doesn't mark in my house and has not made any mistakes in the house since he was three months old. There will obviously be differing opinions on the issue. Do your research.

I brought my Basenji home as a young pup and had him on a raw diet. I've never given him kibble and he is doing excellent. I purchase from my local grocery store, everything from chicken, pork, lamb, duck, turkey etc. I also throw in fresh sardines and anchovies from time to time. He handles it all, along with the raw bones. I also throw a little quick oats in from time to time, along with a few veggies here and there. He is eight months old on the 27th and looks great. There is never a worry about any sort of recall..........do your research.

I would steer clear of mixing the kibble and raw food.
I brought my Basenji home at 6 weeks old and he has been on a raw diet ever since. He will be six months old on the 27th of this month. His diet consists of a variety of meats, from chicken, rabbit, duck, pork, lamb, beef and he gets whole sardines as well. For meaty bones, he gets chicken necks, Turkey necks, chicken feet, leg quarters, wings, and pork ribs. He is doing phenomenal on this diet.

I'm in the same boat. I pick up my B this Saturday and will be feeding him a raw diet. I too have done hours and hours of research, consulted my vet, and will be going with wefeedraw. I receive my monthly shipment tomorrow. We will see how it goes.
Be careful with bones and a puppy. The milk teeth might be an issue. I'll be smashing and grinding to ensure he can eat it for the first couple of months.

Hello there. I was curious to know what type of food did you feed your dog prior to what you are feeding now. I would avoid dry kibble. Try placing your dog on a raw diet. (Meat and uncooked bones) along with very little fiber.
Nowadays, it's difficult to trust the pet food industry. More and more dogs and cats are getting sick due to contaminates in dry dog food.

When feeding raw diet, keep your Basenji in their crate, if you use a crate. That will keep him/her from making a mess throughout the house. Sanitize the crate when you are finished.......I'll never feed any of my dogs kibble ever again. Watch the documentary Petfooled!
