I was thrilled to find out there is another Basenji in my town, but I have not met her yet. I would love to run into someone with Basenjis - most people here have not seen one and Pokey is a fantastic conversation starter and attracts a lot of attention on his walks or when he is in the yard. Enjoyed the pictures!

RE: Pokey's test results are back
and I love the picture of your babies. I love the independent nature of a shiba inu too as much as I do a Basenji.
I think there will always be a concern about fanconi, but this was a good day.

RE: Are all Basenjis such cuddle bugs?
Pokey loves to lean on me whenever he can't lie on me. But then, he has his aloof side, too, and can be happy with his own company. At night and in the afternoon, he cuddles and it is the sweetest thing.

Pokey's test results are back
I just checked the offa.org site for Pokey's results, and it came back as probable carrier. I am so relieved because both his parents were probable carriers. He is still young yet, so strip testing is a year away at least in our future.

RE: Long talk with Dr. Gonto
As a new owner of a Basenji and one who is hooked on this delightful breed, I have to say this was really good information for me. I have read a few conflicting things in my effort to educate myself on Basenji health issues. I am so glad I was directed to this forum.

RE: I have gotten conflicting information
I find it frustrating that they were bred, accidentally or not (spring breeding) and not tested when they were younger. Once I have Pokey's results, I will have a conversation with the breeder. She is not someone I would send anyone to for a puppy.

RE: I have gotten conflicting information
Pat, you are the first to share this information with me. Thank you very much.

RE: I have gotten conflicting information
Thank you, Pat and all who responded. Our vet told us that he wanted us to start strip testing young because if he ever develops it he said it is better to catch it sooner. Prior to reading in here, I had understood that a carrier could develop fanconi, but it looks like some of the people very close to these dogs follow closely those who are researching this condition.

RE: I have gotten conflicting information
That is what our vet told us - he said strip test monthly starting at years old.

I have gotten conflicting information
about Fanconi, but it appears from reading here that if a dog's DNA test comes back as a probable carrier, he likely won't develop Fanconi? I have ordered Pokey's test and should receive it any time now. Waiting to get the test and then the wait for the results seems like an eternity. Both Pokey's parents tests came back a couple of months ago as probable carriers.

Joy of Toilet Paper
I don't know how to describe the sound, but chortle is the best word I can think of. Every time Pokey sees me put a new roll of toilet paper on the holder, he tries to paw it and chortles as if in delight. I see his mind scheming to get at it as I shoo him out of the bathroom to close the door on his treasure. I love this so much I have to admit that I switch out the roll just to hear it. Perhaps I should not tease my dog…

RE: -20 below zero and proud
These stories crack me up because I can completely relate - bitter cold winters and a horrid wind to boot here in Wyoming! I have to carry Pokey out when it is cold, snowy or rainy. And then, he shakes his feet like a cat. It took awhile to get him to do his business when unpleasant outside!

RE: Hello from Wyoming
@Shaye's:
Your puppy is adorable! The picture behind the blinds is priceless - and odd from my point of view, because my girls, within reach of a venetian blind, have and still would tear them to pieces to see out! Needless to say, we had to replace all of them, and they are all "half-mast" forever to protect them from being destroyed.
Hahaha! Pokey too has destroyed them all! We have resorted to replacing them with cheap $5 ones until I find something better

RE: Hello from Wyoming
Glad you made it over Feebee. I'm the one who gave you this link on the other site. You'll find LOTS of great info here. Somebody will ask you where you got Pokey from because we like to know who we're related to via our dogs. I have 3 badsenjis and one crazy malinois. If you ever get down to colorado, let us know.
I often get to Colorado!!! We moved here from Fort Collins, although my husband was in Grand Junction with his job. His job is moving us again to North Dakota.
We got Pokey from a breeder in Utah.

Hello from Wyoming
Here is my first Basenji, 10-month-old Pokey, in the attached pictures. We live in Wyoming where we don't have many neighbors who have seen a Basenji before and he delights them all.
