  • Thinking about getting a basenji…
    E Erik_Arend
    30 May 2007, 06:49

    Hi Mike
    Welcom to the forum.
I just wanted to give you my experiancec conserning allergic reactions to Basenjis.
Until now I have sold 3 Basenji pups to people who are allergic to dogs and everything goes very fine.
Two families in Germany visited our kennel because both woman were allergic to dogs. They stayed for at least 2 hours with our Basenjis sitting on their laps or racing around our house. Non of the two ladies sufferd from any reaction to the dogs and live, one since January 2004 and the second since February 2005 with their Basenji boys without any problem.
Another family (Dutch) is living since february 2007 with another of our B-Boys. Here it is the man who reacts allergic to dogs but not to our Basenjis.
To be complete I have to tell you that a Swedish family came to visit our dogs to see the reaction of the huspand to our dogs. This man was so allergic, he almost reacted to the word dog. They stayed for 1.5 hour at our place between our dogs without any reaction but when they were 1/2 hour on the way back home, the huspand got an allergic reaction and they were very sorry not being able to keep a dog.
Like someone else wrote, you have to visit a breeder and see if there is any allergic reaction to the dogs.
    Good luck.

  • How Pathetic is THIS?
    E Erik_Arend
    11 Apr 2007, 08:55

People who purchased a pup from our last litter came up with a suiteble name for their dog. NIMBUS.
Nimbus means in Dutch 2 different things.

    • The circle around the head of an angel and
    • some kind of thunder cloud
What could be more appropriate for a Basenji?
An angel when he's asleep and a thunder cloud when awake.

  • Microchipping
    E Erik_Arend
    6 Apr 2007, 13:27

All our pups get their chip the same day as their first vaccination (6 weeks old).
Our vet will first mark a little point on the left side of their neck with a marker (just to find the right spot again) and then she will give on that spot a local anaestesia. After this she will first vaccinate all pups and only then she will chip them. The pups never give any reaction due to the local anaestesia.
It's true that the needle is big enough for a little Basenji but with the local anaestesia, the pups don't feel a thing and so don't have a bad feeling about a visit to the vet.

    Hi all

    Just a little brag.
We managed to get our first Ch. title for our home bred B. boy.
Abuluka's Disanka (Chagga, 28 months old) finnished best male during the international show in Luxemburg with CACL and CACIB.
He lost the BOB against the bitch who won the world show in Poland last year (Jasiri Sukari Vermillion).
He now needs only one point (CAC) to become Belgian Ch. and one point (CACIB) to become Int. Ch.
Were so proud of our little boy.

    Kind regards

  • Eating Dirt
    E Erik_Arend
    23 Mar 2007, 13:30

My parents lived for 12.5 years out in the Congo and my mother told me she noticed that Basenjis tend to eat dirt but in fact they are eating roots of different plants and grasses.
I notice the same behaviour in all 6 Basenjis at home. They eat the roots of grass and other plants, even roots of trees and not really the dirt.

  • Nutering a young male
    E Erik_Arend
    9 Feb 2007, 20:09

    Hi folks

I have people interested in buying one of my puppies and they plan on neutering him.
I don't oppose to this but was wondering witch age would be best to do so?
You sometimes read it's best to wait until he has met a female in season but I'm not sure this is correct. The neutering of dogs is not very often done in our part of the world.
    Can anyone please advise me?
    Thanks.

    Erik

    Hi Jenny

    I thought so.
We know Noel & Rainer very well.
Two of our dogs come from her (our Masai & Kara) and we used her Elton (Mutabaruga's Exodus of Jahpeople) twice as stud.
Acually, the Zande dog (Zande Dalasini) is not really our dog but he's a friends dog we integrated in our kennel for breeding and so on. We have the pleasure of having Congo (that's Dalasini's calling name) staying over with us for at least 2 months a year in different perionds of 2 weeks. He such a lovely dog.
Noel is organising again a Basenji Club match-show this year on september first in Trechtingshausen for the BKD. Will you be there? We are coming with all our dogs for the 4th time. Several of our offspring will be there too.
In 2005 our young male Abuluka's Disanka (Chagga) became best male & BOS in show out of 54 Basenjis. All our offspring was there and got very nice results.
It's allways fun and very nice weather and the setting is fantastic.
    Hope to meet you there.

    Regards
    Erik

    @basi:

    Hi Erik,
    It's Noel's bitch Zande Cheka!
