Thank you. Everywhere I go she attracts attention and I call them members of her fan club. LOL
We've been putting her on my friends pony and I walk beside her. She walks around on him then she will lay down on him. She is still trying to get her balance on him She doesn't try to jump off. In fact when I pick her up near the horses she will try to get out of my arms and onto him. When she sees me harnesses my horse to the cart she gets all excited. She loves to ride in the cart too.

Kay-Dee is 2 1/2. The breeder only had the basenjis for a short time. She traded one of her Arabians for the bred dogs. She got hurt and had to sell the Basenjis.Arwen It's a minature horse yearling.

RE: New here
The last one I got from them was Keeper he died 4 years ago and was 15 1/2. We owned his father who came from Winart also. I did have a black and white that I got at 7 1/2 from a lady didn't want her anymore. The lady got her from Winart's at the age of 10 weeks. Poor Max was so neurotic, scared of everything and I could not get her out of it. She would attack Keeper for no reason other then when she left Winart's she was not socialized. She died at 13 1/2. My first came from a shelter in Augusta Maine 29 years ago. Then I met Skip (Winart) 28 years ago and a year after that got a tri female. I had 3 other red and white males from Winart, beside Keeper.
Kay-Dee came from Iowa because I couldn't find a breeder from Maine. She is a real sweet loving girl who is too smart for her own good. She is a lot of fun as the others were. i don't have the papers in her because I didn't plan on breeding her. The breeder didn't want her bred anyway and all I wanted was a pet. Spoiled by Basenjis.

RE: Lady Kay-Dee
Actually when I got her I took her out to see my horse she wanted to run right up to him. She was so tiny when I got her weighed less then 3lbs at 3 months old. I put her on Blue Buffalo dog food and she started growing her weight now at 2 1/2 is usually between 18 and 19 lbs now. Anyway back to the subject of her with horses. If I pick her up and am standing beside my horse she tries to climb onto his back. She loves to ride in the cart when I'm driving my horse.

westcoastflea1 They raised some real nice Basenjis. I had a total of 5 that I got from them. Wish they were still raising them.

RE: "Warning" about Bs
How true. I'm surprised no one has started Basenji Anonymous, LOL It's like pringles can't have one. Although I have just one now. I have owned Basenjsi for 30 years. I tell my dog loving co-workers about Kay-Dee's antics and they love hearing about her. She goes a lot of places with me and she has her own fan club.

RE: Pups!
Makes me want another one, Nothing cuter then a Basenji pup in my opinion.

RE: Question of passing out
Got report of blood work on Kay-Dee everything was normal. He wants another urine sample because the other had crystals in it, but he said it could be from setting at the lab it was sent to. So I will bring a sample and he is going to check for crystals himself.
He is sending the recording of the episode and bloodwork results to another vet that specializes in neurological issues to see if he can shed any light on it. -
RE: New here
Welcome Donna…I wonder if her client with 4 basenjis is listme's sister, Gloria.
Your story is interesting about your kids breeder here in Maine. My brother's basenji, Zeke's breeder was in Gray (back in the 70s/80s) - I think she now breeds Ridgebacks. Debbie Hauri, in NH, is a longtime breeder and she was telling me about breeders that were in Maine years ago - I bet she would know Winart. She knew Zeke's breeder.
I'm finding the basenji world is so small.
My first B was sired by Mata Hari's Super Sheik and I knew the person that raised Bs and then Ridgebacks. I belonged to the Mainely Basenji club years ago and they used to have a couple of matches a year. Was a lot of fun.

RE: Question of passing out
Talked to my vet today and Kay-Dee is having a full panel of bloodwork done Tuesday morning and is having a urine test if I can get some. She's not co-operating right now. The vet is also going to send the video of her having the last episode to a vet that specializes in nerological problems.

RE: Question of passing out
how very strange. Narcalepsy springs to mind. As does epilepsy or hypoglycemia or heart problems.
The thing that is a strange is the fact that the pads of her feet and ears get cold and her temp lowers plus her gums get pale. She doesn't respond to any stimuli during an episode. Going to put a call in to the vet tomorrow and ask about blood work.

RE: New here
My name is Donna.
The other Basenjis I had came from the Winart kennel in Portland. They are no longer raising them anymore. I wish they were because I definately would have gotten one from the. Kay-Dee came from Iowa. She is a real sweetheart and too smart for her own good. I read a book Good Bye My Lady many years ago when i was in high school and that's how I learned about them and wanted one. The first one I got was from the shelter in Augusta 29 years ago. A tri color male and black and white female and no one claimed them We got the tri male and named him Pogo. We had him for a year and had problems we couldn't handle and found him another home then I met the breeder and the rest is history. If I had known her when I had Pogo she would have helped me would the problems. I just love the breed, the size and the personality.
A friend of mine said she has a client that has four Basenjis. She owns Sable Oaks. -
New here
Hi all.
I just found this sight and find it very informative. Others don't understand Basenjis unique behavior. I have owned seven Basenjis in all and love the breed. I now am owned by a two year old red and white Lady Kay-Dee. I have done some agility and am doing more obedience with Kay-Dee. Agility on hold for now. She also takes riding lessons on my friends pony and loves to ride in the cart when I'm driving my horse. I live in Farmingdale Maine. -
RE: Question of passing out
He didn't do any blood work we need to talk more about that

RE: Question of passing out
Thanks for all the responses. We don't think it's a reaction to bites or plants because it's happenned twice a year a part. If it happened more often if might be easier to figure out not that I want it to. He's leaning toward her heart because of her extremities getting cold. He listened to her heart a couple of times while we were there and her heart sounded regular and strong. She was completely out for 15 to 20 minutes. It seems like it it's epilepsy the spells last a long time. When she came to she got a drink and she seemed completely normal. The vet is doing some research on it. the first episode we thought was an allergy to fish (wish it was a fish allergy then we would know what it is and could prevent it.) but she didn't have any the second time and she was with me for the two hours before she collasped while I was driving my horse so I know she didn't eat anything during that time. I went to take her off the seat and put her down and she just dropped.
BTW, I see that you are from Maine - I'm from Maine as well…where are you in Maine - I'm in Gray (work in Portland).
I live in Farmingdale and work in Augusta.

Question of passing out
Hi all. I just found this forum.
Kay-Dee is a two year old Basenji. A year ago she collasped with no warning. Her gums were pale and her feet and ears were cold. She was not thrashing or anything. The episode lasted 15 to 20 minutes. By the time got her to the vets she had come out of it and other then her temp being low she was back to normal. She had another episode a year later. The same thing collapsed with out warning. Symptons all the same. Didn't get her to the vet but did video tape it, My vet is trying to figure out what is going on. Her heart sounds are strong and normal He is leaning toward a heart problem and doesn't think it is neurological. If she has another episode he wants to hook her up to an EKG. I have owned 6 other basenkis and this is the first time have had any problems. Hope someone can shed some light on this problem.
Thank you
