    @tanza:

    Only a Basenji would sleep in a fire pit!

    The most common saying in our house is ' yup, she's a Basenji'

    The Elkhound (Max) isn't ours, the two larger dogs belong to our friends. Max doesn't care for Zuri too much, she always wants to play and he likes to relax. He does play nice with her when he feels like it though and that is usually fine with her.

    We just got back from a 4 day camping trip with lots of rain (a basenji personal favorite). We had 1 campsite, 2 tents, 4 adults and 4 dogs….what fun!!! I am including a few pictures of Zuri and her antics. I apologize for the lines in the pictures, it was the only way I could resize them for this forum.

  • Puppy B and a kitten?
    C cleopatra

    So, we did decide to get the kitten and it's been a couple weeks since we brought him home. He is about 6 months old at this point. Zuri loves to chase him and they play quite a bit….sometimes rougher that I would like but when Tony is fed up, he goes in his cat tree out of Zuri's reach....and well, when Zuri is fed up...wait a minute, that never happens. Anyway, so far all is going quite well.

    @tanza:

    I would NOT declaw… a "clawed" kitty has a better chance of gaining a Basenji's respect...IMO

    The decision I am referring to is the one to get the kitten…not to have it declawed. I will not have a cat declawed for that reason among many others.

    I am not a fan of declawing and since we have a doggie door, there is a chance the cat may get out and if she does she will need her claws. I will keep you posted on the decision and the adjustment. I am already planning escape zones for the kitten if we get her.

    We are definitely going to invest in a cat tree if we get this cat. Hubby is in love with the kitten and convinced Zuri will be fine with it. It is an older kitten and not too small. I too think she is pretty playful and doesn't have any agression towards any animals so far….she just wants to play. Still looking for suggestions...but as I said...I think hubby is already sold on the idea. If tehy become playmates, it would be great because my old gal won't be around forever.
    I do plan to proceed with caution.

    Thanks for the imput.

    I am wondering if anyone has experience introducing a kitten to a puppy basenji.
    I have been reading some of the posts on B's and cats. Most of them seem to have started with the cat first and then introduced the Basenji.
    We are thinking of getting a kitten to play with Zuri. (So she stops picking on our 13yr old dachshund).
    Zuri is now 8 months old. She loves to play but our old gal peppermint just can't handle the type of play. I think if Peppermint could sue Zuri, we would be in court forever dealing with harassment and abuse charges (Peppermint would win).

    Anyway, good idea or bad idea to get a kitten?

    What is it with B's and toilet paper? We have to keep the bathroom doors closed here all the time…she loves to pull at the TP when it's still on the roll.

  • Fanconi Testing - Please do monthly

    Thanks, I was just going to post to see when and how often one needs to test for Fanconi. I didn't realize it starts at age 2 or 3 for testing. Zuri is in for surgery today (spay) and they tested her urine last week before surgery but I guess it wasn't required at this early stage. (Zuri is 6 months)

    I personally don't understand why you would take a crate trained dog and 'uncrate' them. I have had crate trained animals for a number of years and the fact is, when I come home I am happy to see them and they are happy to see me. We have no 'surprises' to deal with. At my last vet visit, I encountered a couple with a poodle who was missing half it's face because it had chewed a power cord. I prefer to never come home to that sort of thing. Both my B and my dachshund are crated whenever we leave the house as well as at night….that's just my 2 cents.

    She sits on command and has for at least a few weeks….but when it comes to heading out for her walk....that's where she lights up! Anyway, I will keep trying and trying.
    Thanks for the advice

    So, this morning, I tried to take some advice from this thread and start to train Zuri to let me go out the door first. Well….I had the screen door closed with my back to the door asking her to sit and it worked for a second...then she went for the door (excited about going for a walk)...she was on a leash so I pulled her back in front of me again and tried again..... this time, I had no control over her...she was going for the door....when I turned to call her back, I noticed a BIG puppy dog on my front step with tail wagging (no wonder she wasn't interested in me) I of course gave up trying to get her to sit and let me go out first. I waited to see if someone was going to come for this big puppy....no one did. I knew I couldn't take Zuri for her walk with this dog loose because it would surely follow us around and if it ran off and got hit...not good. So I decided to take Zuri out to meet the dog...checked it's tag and it had the address...just a few doors down from me. Turns out the gate had blown open and the pup got out, happy owners and Zuri and I went for our walk.
    I will have to try training her to sit and wait another time....but I definitely like the idea and see the benefits of it but today was not my day.

    I had a bad couple days at work and Zuri has been digging at the leather sofa and my bedspread and it had been testing my patience. I admit, I have days where I ask myself what the heck were you thinking??? But then I look at her and well…you all know what happens then. Anyway, each time I give her heck, she stops, looks at me like she is saying 'Whats the problem here' and then continues digging at the furniture.
    I was going to post a 'HELP make her stop PLEASE.' but did a search on 'digging' first...well, what a laugh I had. I am clearly not the only one with a B that has this kind of behaviour. It still drives me crazy but I am not alone and I got a few ideas to help stop the digging.

    Just had to say I love this forum....no...I NEED this forum....or even better yet....My Basenji needs this forum.

    Thanks

    I am downloading pictures off my camera right now and charging the battery…She is graduating from Petsmart so the caps are ready. I have yet to figure out how the heck she will sit still for us to put it on her...gonna have to break out the really good treats!!!! I promise I will post some pics. Her 'trick' to graduate will be howling to Nelly Furtado....she does it all the time and I have the cd ready for tomorrow. If that fails (it won't) i have the high 5 or crawl that she can do for them. Who knew?? Such a smart critter!

    I don't know much about training a dog to be afraid of cars…but I would think if you ever want them to get into a car at some point, it would be best if they were not afraid of it.
    I am going to rely on "come" to help keep my little one away from cars. She has yet to get away from me but I have been working on the "Treats" command for her to come and at 5 months old, she will come for treats about 95% of the time.
    Puppy school is helping us both a great deal and it's fun too.
    My 2 cents.
