Hi, yes I too have an escape artist, but I am teaching them to wait at the door, and not go out till I say okay.
Well it may take a long time but I am trying. ggg
Hope no ones B gets out, they hate coming back, BUT, if they get loose, we fall on the ground and make noises, they came to see what was wrong. gggg Carol

RE: I need help having two problems
IMHO, please be careful with the alpha roll over, I used to do that when I first started dog training many years ago, I eventually had an aggression problem with the dog, got bit pretty good. I guessed it was my fault and never rolled one since. I never used pacifiers with my son, so no dog troubles there, but his blanky got stolen often. gg It sure cannot hurt to put the litterbox there and see what happens, its easy, fairly clean, and better than cleaning the rug often. You could also try using a scatter rug over the other rug, see if that helps any! I have one spot where one of the dogs, having gotten too excited, peed, they still go there if excited. I love my dogs, oh well its only in the hall. ggg Good luck, hope you find a solution! Carole

RE: Pottying FAR from home
I had the same problem with my guys, but I cannot walk them here, we have no safe areas, and I live in the suburbs. We have screaming neighbors, coyotes ready to snark you or the dog, and also the occasional loose dog.
So I would wait till Angel, a mix who hates everything, had to go so bad when I got her to where I wanted her to poo, she was ready!! I also keep a small lower, cement floored hall; paper covered! Samuel even if he is in emergency mode, to do stuff, seldom goes inside, he runs out does business and runs in! gg No sniffs if he has to go!! I just picked a good spot close to house, picked up a poo on the paper, put it out there and Angel went there. Its hard to get them to do what they do not want too do!! ggg Carol -
RE: Hiding
Winnie hi, I also have a rescued dog, have the same problem with her often. She is my 3rd rescue, and even after 6 months, she still has issues, I think its from something in her past. My first ones name stayed the same, the second one the group changed it, I changed it back, as she was very confused, with this one I never knew it, and she comes when called, but does not respond much to the name we use. Tone of voice helps a lot, and I think too a lot of time and patience will help her. I would give your rescue some time to adjust, one trainer says it can take as long as a year, sometimes you can have minor problems forever. Carole

RE: Pooping in the crate
I agree it takes time and patience to train them, what not to do. I would however like to say IMHO to be careful with underground fencing. I had 3 friends who got it, all 3 had the dogs run right through it chasing something, and then would not come back through it. One of them got hit, he survived, but they got rid of the dog, instead of the fence.
Not too bright, was not his fault, but some do that I guess.
Time, patience and love, will do the job every time!!! Carole -
RE: Here a Poop, there a poop,…..everywhere a ....
Hi, well my solution to the bedroom thing is, I keep all of the doors closed to any room I am not in; bedrooms, bathrooms, closed, off limits to them unless I am there.
But I still have problems with Angel, who if I do not get her empty at 11 pm, uses newspaper in basement hall.
I live with that, better than on the rugs. Carole -
RE: Basic Obedience, Colorado
I am working with an APDT trainer, they are very expensive if you have them come to your house one on one, at least this one is. She is very good, but it is hard to get my girl who was abused to allow the woman inside. I have stopped having her here for the time being, and may pursue classes when I get my girl socialized better! Carol

RE: Walking more than one at a time
I seem to have the very same issues, but with my 2 pups ages 2&3 the female pulls ahead, all over the place, the male stops and will not walk in certain areas, not sure whats there, but he will not go over it, only around the spot! I am exhausted! I walk them both only because I have to with my schedule. I am working with a trainer but not doing very well just now, as the death of a close friend has stopped my training till cataloging her items and selling them is done! Glad to hear there are ways to get them to listen to me, even if I have to use FOOD. ARGH!

RE: Kiora's Bathing Adventure
Well this is a cute thread, I think all dogs will go out and roll in things, usually yucky things.:D I had my female for about 24 hrs, when she decided to roll on a dead thing.
 I took her inside ready to fight with her, and when we got in the bathroom, she jumped into the tub!:D
Since then she is less reliable with geting in the tub, but does like to get in when I shower! ggg Carole -
RE: How much does your B weigh and?
Well I have a 1/2 Basenji, 1/2 Aussie cross, we rescued her
from a pound. When we got her she was skinny, she weighs around 28-30 now and looks very good! She also is a barker, when she sees things, people especially; I was told by many people that she is rescource guarding! I got the message, when she barks, I now tell her: Good girl, thank you, enough now, and she usually stops, unless our Male B gets in the fray, then its useless to talk!! Carole -
RE: First Time B Owner - Pics
OH I am a sucker for puppies, just love puppy breath!!!
They are adorable!!!!! -
RE: House Breaking a 9 Month-old
You seem to be doing the right things, it will certainly take time, and a lot of patience! I Have a rescue female, that made house breaking a huge issue, untill I started doing the umbilical cord thing. Take a leash, about 6 ft. long put around your waist, clip through hand hold, and clip to regular collar. You will know when your dog starts sniffing and circling to do, that it needs to go out! It took my female about a month and 1/2 to catch on! Except in the rain! gg Carole

RE: Rain & potty training
Hi, I have 2 pups, a purebred Basenji male just going on 3 and a female 1/2 Basenji and 1/2 Aussie, both hate the rain! NO I mean they hate anything wet,, rain, dew, puddles if its damp they will not go out! The male acts silly when I put the leash on him to go out, lifts his feet up before he even gets onto the grass; one foot and then the other, and he whines asking to be picked up! Silly boy!
The female will go out but will not stay out long, so to keep my sanity, I use an umbrella, but I also have a lower basement hall with a cement floor, about 3ftx5ft, and I put down boku paper for them if they will not go out!
It is easier to just pick up coats and boots, if yours will keep them on! My two ate them, the boots not the coats.:)

RE: Help with aggression
I have a Basenji, who when we went to the vets, with him and our female mix, lunged and growled  at every dog there wonder if any of you had a similar problem ever?
He seems to dislike most other dogs? Am I missing something here, or do some Basenjis just not like others? I have tried everything I know about, or others suggested, none worked! Thanks! I also use gates, to no avail, my 2 just go over them. My first ever Basenji girl used to climb trees and jump out of a six foot high pen
if no tree to climb out, she climbed over! -
RE: Kiora and Obedience Class
Yes I am retraining a badly abused mix, she is too smart, learns fast, but has a very strong will about some things. GG We are on the sit/stay and etc. from beginning again as they were sick! I do not train when they are sick! Carol

RE: Sandie is a growing girl…
Yea Basenji pups hate rain, my mix will go out in a torrent, my full will look at me like; "Are you nuts, it's wet out there"., gggg! I always walk mine on leashes so that way they have to go out, I am a good mom though and take an umbrella!!! Carole

RE: Its the constant chewing…...
I would not presume to say they stop chewing, we lost a male in jan. 11 yrs and he still had his favorite chews! We now have a 3 yr old and he is by far, a champion chewer.
I just hide everything! ggggg -
RE: Crate and potty training help
Yes husbands can be a trial at times. When my Kalya was dying from lymphoma hubby said no dogs for awhile!
Kalya left on tues. for the bridge, on sat. we got a Basenji/Aussie mix, who was gonna be put down, and then3 months later got Mata Hauri Samuel to co-own. Now hubby is going in sept to the BOCA to see the african exhibit and meet some friends. Said he would love to at least see a tri! ggggg Carole
