So, as you may know, I've been researching the breed and things to do with socialixing my dogs with the new addition.

So here I give you all of the 'Basenji Bookmarks'

Feel free to add your own.

I have an IPhone app called YStream, with this I made a playlist of lots and lots of videos. I searched 'Basenji', 'Basenji Training', 'Basenji Agility' and 'Basenji Tricks' as well as a few others.

So, I've gone off Queta as it sounds too much like my name when you say it, so now I'm thinking Nambi.

My dog's name's are Poppy and Rasco, so ideally looking for a five letter name with two syllables that starts with either N, Q or T.

    Will probably be a girl.

    Picky, I know lol

I don't mind made up/unusual words as long as I can pronounce them.

    Thanks : )

Aw Pipet is such a sweetheart, I'm sure Poppy would love to jump on her!

    Not sure if it will help, but one of my 'Basenji Bookmarks' and there are a lot of them, is this;

From what I've heard Basenji's get on better with other Basenji's then other dog's…depends on the individual dog really.

  • Training with my Jack Russells?

    I'm 23 but it's complicated :)

My brother (who does nothing for our current dogs but is for some reason against getting another) is 26. But like I say he does nothing for our JRT's .

Hi all, I have trained my JRT's since I got them single handedly, and I think once my mother talks to people with basenjis at the windsor championship show she will be persuaded enough (or she will not at all, it'll go one way or the other).

So I want to make sure that when I get my puppy that I am fully prepared with what I should do and when.

Also, thought about taking her to http://www.puppyschool.co.uk/ , as well as training at home and on short walks. does this seem like a good idea?

Also, what age would you think I should introduce my JRT's to the Basenji? Should the B be in the crate when they meet her, so they can get her scent?

The male JRT is a bit funny with some other dogs, but some he's perfectly fine with, once he's known them for awhile. He's been neutered for a few years. The other dog (bitch) is fine with other dogs. If Rasco growls at the puppy do you reckon it'll just eh an alpha thing, though he likes females more than males.

Do you think it'd help if I trained/fed them together?

Also, we may be getting chickens -my mother's idea, though I'm not opposed to it and think this would strengthen my case for a puppy, as in I get a puppy as I would help out with the chickens and clearing the other half of our garden out for the chickens.

    Thanks.

    @moetmum:

I work weekends so would be difficult. We do however have two shows coming up that you might like to come along to. The first is at Newbury, we are on the Saturday which I believe is the 2nd of June, there are 17 B's entered. The second is at Windsor Great Park which is on Saturday 30 June, we don't have entry numbers yet but it is likely to be similar numbers.

Yep we are going to the Windsor one! Can we just go and talk to people or is there a protocol for a champ show?

Ah thank you, I think it is because he is being protective of me and I'm not sure how that could be sorted since I'm the only one that walks them :)

We did it with Rasco to try and help him stop being aggressive towards other dogs and while I think it has helped a bit and we've taught him how to heel properly, we're going to stop.

Though it's not expensive at ?50 for eight weeks, just don't see the point anymore. We've been doing it for ten weeks (tonight will be the eleventh), and joined another class after the Eigth week that were halfway through their course, so next week's lesson will be the last.

I think it's for novice owners and/or competitive Obiedence and/or Good Citizen dogs.

We still do agility and doggy tricks :)

    Yeah, thanks.

Our JRT's have never had anything more than spaying/neutering and the yearly check up/injections.

Hopefully when she hears owners we talk to at the show say this, she'll believe it.

Thanks for the replies, it is all very useful info :)

Yes we have squirrels and foxes in our garden but last thursday during agility poppy decided she was going to chase the bunnies so she found a small gap in the fence and didn't come back for ten minutes even with four trainers and I trying to get her back. She does that probably once every three months or so.

Our cat used to play with the foxes. Seriously.

Haha, thanks for the videos, she is awesome! Your song you made up is pretty awesome too!

We don't have fire hydrants over here so to see that was an added bonus!

    Thanks again.

    She is very adorable.

    Are you from Canada?

Hi guys, thanks for your advice!

Can Basenji's be trained to be off lead in one specific field? There's a quite well sealed in field where I take my current dogs to just up the road. I know they are a hound and people say you shouldn't let them off but I wondered if I trained the dog, on lead, to ignore the exits in that one field with repeated training that would help. I can always use a retractable lead no problem.

I was also wondering if because of my two dogs that would help to keep the Basenji occupied instead of another smell?

Also, it would be doing agility outside as soon as it was old enough (my club do puppy classes and pre-agility), but would this be a problem or as I'm doing it outside or should I find another club that has indoor facilities (I have been doing agility with my current two with that club for almost a year).

Plus as I have other dogs -they know a Basenji and get on fine with her - does the Basenji like other dogs? I've certainly seen videos of them getting on fine. I just wandered about living with them if it would be different. We also have an outdoor cat.

Also to do with children? I think as long as you socialise them early on they are fine. Is this true?

I would be training (inside of course), from the day after we brought the puppy home. I've trained my JRT's since they were five and a half weeks old (we got them early because of special circumstances). They're three now.

The reason I ask is my mother is really the only one delaying the process of getting a Basenji. I was discussing it with her yesterday and I have done LOTS of research and have many websites to aid in training and socialising etc although I know how to train I realise training a Basenji is different, although they are meant to be about the same difficulty as a JRT to train?

Her hangups are the vet bills though I explained to her they are health checked by the breeder. We had a litter of Golden Retrievers about ten years ago and I don't think she understands that health checks might have improved since then.

She said she did some 'research' and didn't like the look of them. But she's seen the one round here and thinks she's pretty. I'm hoping by meeting Basenji 's up close she will change her mind. I pointed out to her that she might not like the look of one of our JRT's now if she didn't own him, but it doesn't matter once you've brought a dog up from a puppy and she might not like the look of one dog but that doesn't mean she won't like another.

I would also be keeping it's mind occupied by training daily as well as walking daily. Apparently they are easy to housetrain is that right?

    Sorry to ramble :)

    Thanks again

Ah ok I'll talk to my mum about them :)

She said its more the vet bills than anything which is delaying her wanting to get another dog, though she did say 'not now' so am hoping in the next few years. I did tell her they are throughoughly health tested and I've read up on the health concerns they do have.

I suppose I could get the train to you, are you near a station? What day would you be free?
