Sothwest Iowa
Are there any other basenjis in SW Iowa? Our vet says he hasn't seen one in 20 some odd years. That doesn't mean they aren't out there.

Basenji puppies
I wasn't sure where to post this , but i have some questions about breeding. I would like Chaos to have one litter of puppies. Mostly because I want to keep two of them. Let me be clear, I do not want to become a breeder. I have no idea how to go about this. How old should she be, she has already had her first heat. How do I go about finding a stud for her? Is it better to inciminate her or let them do it naturally? I'm sure there are other things that I havn't even considered in my list of questions. Any advice would be great.

RE: Chaos the defender
This could be, i think she jsut loves the baby that much. The other kids can scream and yell all they want and she doens't even move, but the baby whines and she is on it.

RE: Basenji Proofing Christmas
Chaos has not once touched the tree or teh decorations, we were worried about it as she isn'e even a year yet. But she has been very good with it. Of course now that I've posted this she will probablly decide to make a liar outta me.

RE: Chaos the defender
Oh she is definiately doing her job it just makes me giggle that she had no idea that she was the one who casue the the baby to cry in the first place.

Chaos the defender
So Chaos has titled herself Kaysn's(my daughter) defender. SHe will howl and go nuts any time Kasyn cries or is displeased. Today Chaos made Kasyn cry. Kasyn came to me and I picked her up. Chaos came over and stood by us howling and whining and pawing at me. As soon as I put Kasyn down, Chaos stopped. All this time I was getting the evil stink eye from my dog. Silly dog had no idea it was her that made the baby cry.

RE: Chaos
we actually discussed that but decided it is a bonding thing between the two of them, and i am kind of curious to see how long it takes for the dog to train the kid.

RE: Chaos
It was so cute to watch that I didn't stop it, i have no doubt the baby will be opening the kennel in no time.

Chaos
Chaos is alsmot a year now, and although there have been some trying times, I'm glad we got her. I had to share with someone what she is trying to teach our 14 month old baby to do. Chaos was in her kennel, because the older kids were eating(that's a whole other story). The baby was playing with Chaos through the kennel. Chaos was trying to teach the baby how to open the kennel for her. And it was working, between the two of them, they managed to get one latch open and were working on the second when the kids finished dinner and chaos got set free.

Chaos' first real car ride
So Chaos whent on her first road trip yesterday. We took her teddybear so she would feel more comfortable in the car. She did great by the way. Anyway we came up on some road construction, and Chaos made a mad dive for her bear. She sat on top of it and stared down the construction workers though the window. It made me giggle cause it looked like she was worried they were going to take her bear. As soon as we were past she got off her bear and layed down again.

RE: Potty training
Yeah I had a rule too, only older dogs from the rescue and now we have Chaos…..rules get broken.

RE: How normal is this?
My goal with her is to have her evenutuall follow hand commands as our other dog does ( She was trainedwhen we got her). Its good to see that can be done with this breed. Thankyou for all the sugestions, I will try them out and see what works for her.

RE: Fear of dogs
I used to do animal theropy with disabled people with my lab, if you can find a dog that is that well trained and remains calm no matter what, and also maybe plays fetch so your nephew doesn't have to get up close and personal right off the get go. My friend is terrified of large dogs, and I had her play fetch with Hershey(my lab). She was very jumpy when Hershey ran back at her with the frisbee until she saw the dog stopped quiet a ways from her. My friend now lives in a house with a very large husky.

How normal is this?
Okay so Chaos has been working on sit. When she can see the treat she does it. When I say "sit" without a treat in view she takes off, sniffs here and there, may grab a toy, and then comes back and sits. And she won't sit for my husband at all even when he has a treat in sight. I think the husband thing is because he is only home three days a week and so she doesn't see him as anyone she needs to listen to. But am curious if the I'll do it,but on my own time is a normal trait.

RE: Potty training
Chaos has now gone two days without pooing in the kitchen. I doubt by any means this means she is broke of it, but I'll take any progress I can get.
-
RE: Potty training
Yes I have caughter her and I pick her up and say "potty" and take her back outside. I have even picked her poo up and taken it outside with us and let her watch me put it in the yard. Yet she still poos outside then runs for the kitchen and tries to go again.
-
RE: Potty training
She pees more than two or three times a day she pees two or three times everytime she goes outside wich is quite often. And She doesn't seem to have a problem with peeing in the house it is just the poo.

RE: Potty training
I do go out with her and yes she goes. She seems to poo two to three times and pee about the same. Once again this advice is great. Thanks to everyone who gave advice and to anyone who has anymore.
