RE: Looking to adopt a basenji (Los Angeles, CA)
there's been one listed on Craigslist that might be worth looking at:
http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/pet/5128491520.html
I know nothing about this dog - good, bad or otherwise, just saw that it was being listed.
Otherwise, I'd recommend going to basenji.org and looking for breeder contacts there. Contact a few and see if they can help you

RE: Basenji and baby
welcome and i do hope we haven't lost our new friend. i think all new posters are moderated because of all the spam that has hit this board in the past. there's lots of good info on the internet about kids and dogs, but Dr Yin is one of the best:

RE: Kidney disease… food?
Oh i am so sorry Debra. it's never long enough and always such a blow when it's unexpected. even if it's unexpected because you're in denial (been there). and it's always hard when you have fought so hard to keep them here. kidney disease is such a nasty thing. so sorry.

RE: Is she Basenji?
i'm not sure, the write up says she doesn't have white feet or white on the tail. I actually prefer less white too.

RE: Is she Basenji?
My "job" with BRAT is to search the internet rescue sites daily looking for Basenjis and high mixes who may need help. One of the determining factors I always use is to see if the dog has hints of the Irish pattern (white on the feet, belly, chest, and tail tip). I don't think there's a Basenji mix without it. On the other hand, it seems many dogs with Irish white and large, prick ears are designated as "Basenji" by the shelters. Most aren't, but there are certainly some, and they always have a "look". I think that the dog that this thread was originally about is definitely part Basenji.
-JoanneCheck out Okapi on the Colorado Basenji Rescue website. I've always thought the Irish marking gene was pretty strong, but Okapi sure looks mostly basenji. I also think the OP's dog is quite possibly a b-mix. either way, very cute

RE: Aggression towards other dogs
Also read Control Unleashed. You will learn about thresholds and desensitization. You may also want to look into BAT (behavior adjustment training) by Grisha Stewart. Click to Calm by Parsons and Bringing Light to Shadow might also be helpful books

RE: Precautions
Sorry no one saw this earlier. I think we need some more info. Are the kids and basenji going to be living together or just visiting? Age of kids? Age of basenji? Has the basenji been around kids before? Are the kids respectful of the basenji? Do the kids tend to run out the door w/o closing it? Are they old enough to help clicker train the basenji? There's a lot of info on the web about kids and dogs, I'd start with Dr Sophia Yin or Dr Patricia McConnell. Basenjis can be less tolerant than other breeds, but they can get on fine with considerate children.

RE: Neutering…
OH! and while you're cooking, you might want to cook some human cookies for the vet and staff. I try to do that as a blatant bribe, er, I meant to show my appreciation. yea, that's it!

RE: Neutering…
Of course you're worried, that's because you're a good dog momma. I will warn you that after my boys were neutered, there was some swelling and that is normal. But my boys did fine and both were over 10 when I neutered them. (They both had a tnt - tooth and testicle -ectemy.) You should also cook a few meals for your dog so that he will have something to eat post surgery after he feels up to eating. He doesn't need that, but it will give you something to do and you will feel good when you see him eating food you slaved over. I like to do the liver cleanse diet ( google Jean Dodds liver cleanse) after surgery when I think of it. That should help the liver rid the body of any residual toxins and anesthesia. I don't always do that and it may not make any difference, but it makes me feel like i'm doing something helpful.

RE: Neutering…
He'll be fine. Just make sure to get pre-blood work done just incase there are in values that are "off".
