" 2. The WSAVA also states that the last puppy vaccine against the core diseases should be given at 14-16 weeks of age. This is because, before this time, the mother passes immunity to her puppies, and this ?maternal immunity? can prevent the vaccine from working.

    3. A high percentage (98%) of core puppy vaccines given between 14-16 weeks of age will provide immunity against parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus for many years, and probably for the life of the animal .

    6. The WSAVA supports the use of titre testing. …."

  • Hoping vets acknowledge this and act on it, I think there are a lot of people in the dark regarding vaccines and put all their trust in their vet, I was one of them until I did a lot more research when getting Kaiser and was shocked to find my last dog was receiving vaccines he didn't even need such as lepto and kennel cough(given by a newly trained vet) totally not required as his lifestyle didn't ask for it. Kaiser had his last 3 core vaccine at 13 weeks and a titre at 8 months and he has immunity for the 3 core diseases, so will titre again sometime in the future for safety's sake. Feel guilty for letting my other dog down and mad for being blind. So we now only have the annual checkups sadly the cost is nearly the same as if he would have a booster and checkup. Feel that vets should be trained more in vaccines and raw feeding as they seem to be lacking and negative towards both.

Thanks everyone. He is definitely back to his old self this week thank goodness!!! Playing with me again, trying to steal my dinner haha! His coat is even shinier. It must have been a rough few days for him trying to adjust to his holidays ending. I'm just so happy and thanks for all of the reassurance. We have enrolled in puppy classes, which start in two weeks. Sadly we never got to do them because of the covid lockdown. So that is something to look forward to!

Called to talk to the owner of a vet practice and he wasn't in so they took a MSG and told me he'd call on Monday. Turns out he stopped in to check on the practice and called me Sunday but I didn't pick up. Totally blanked out today with the weather and at 6 I got a call, it was Dr. Seigel, we ended up talking for half an hour and he seems to be very open to my philosophies, working with me and most of all is excited to learn about the breed. It's nice to hear a vet say they learn so much from their patients…he agreed to take us on and I will see him in a month for Oakleys two year checkup. Im also having a full blood panel drawn as a baseline...should i have a full t4 thyroid panel done also? lastly, come january he will be getting his hips done for OFA since he will be two this November. The Dr. even remembered taking care of my first dog Petey for the last few yrs of his life...makes me happy!

Sweet, Thanks. I guess I was looking up basenji specific information and I didnt see any thing in the books I have. I dont get sick much so i shouldn't have to worry. I'm actually feeling better today, not that he cares.

Yeah, I was an wreck sitting in the waiting room for the results. All kinds of scenarios going through my head…testicular cancer or something...oh god. Funny thing, Gizmo does not mind going to the vet. He actually happily enters the vet building. Gets a lot of attention from all the staff. The thing he does hate is the wait. This is the only time I actually hear him make any sound. He will whimper and protest. Trying to pull his way in different directions, but the floor is so slippery to his feet he just "walks" on the spot...makes me laugh.

@Patty: Thank you Kris - I have printed this off from an other site and am giving copies to my vet and my member of parliament to assist in our fight to stop the automatic annual vaccinations practised by the majority of vets in the UK. You're very welcome!

Just as a note, we had a Carrier bred to a Clear which produced 8 puppies. The testing on the puppies found 1 Carrier, 1 Clear, and 6 Indeterminate. According to Jon Curby, the rate up til now has been about 5% Indeterminates - but this breeding produced 75%! As Kathy said, the statistics are for individual puppies, not for entire litters… Terry
