    • Female aggression with new B coming into home

      Hi all,

Well, I have a 2 yr old female who I thought was well behaved. She has always been so playful with all other dogs and B's coming over to the house. I have been watching 2 (female and male) many times when their parents go on travel and for the most part - she has been great and not aggressive. She seemed to live for interaction with other dogs. So, feeling bad for her, I got a "rescue" male, 4 yr old, that had been an only B. He has wanted and tried to play with her and for the most part she wants nothing to do with him. She will play a tiny bit, then turn into an aggressive little brat. he is losing his interest, and I don't blame him.

Question: From your experiences, Is this a hopeless cause and things are not likely to improve or is it more normal and my Skyler needs some time to warm up to Enzo (new male)? Do dogs each have their own individual chemical attraction- i.e. sometimes its there and sometimes not ?

PS - I did introduce them on neutral territory.

      Thanks,

    • RE: Maryland Meetups? Baltimore County

Yes there is a dog park near me. Its not the best, but its a dog park nonetheless. I was there yesterday and learned there is a basenji meetup every Sat at 10 am.

I would like to set something up though doing a hiking trail with the dogs. Any ideas ?

I am in Northern Virginia - maybe we could meet some weekend. You are only about 50 miles away. I have 6 month old female who is very social but I would like to have her with her breed if possible.

    • Basenji behaviors common ??

      All,

I am new to the forum… I have had 2 basenjis -Tanner (12 with fanconi) and ALi (16 plus) that have passed and added so much life and fun to my life. ALi had so many funny "moves" and "spaz" moments - he was a comic that was just a sheer pleasure. Ali I put through obedience school- he was not too snarky. Loved other dogs -not too much on the people side. Tanner was agressive, I got too young from the breeder (5.5 weeks) . He was insecure and protective of me. He was snarky and did not like other dogs. But the two got along well, until late in thir old age - then they tolerated each other.

I am ready for another 1or 2 and just wanted to get a check from all on my experiences with my boys - were their traits common to basenjis ?? or did I not train them enough ??

      1. OBS #1: they were only affectionate on their terms and didnt like to be petted or picked up.Is this more common than not. They wanted to be by you, but hands off for the most part.

      2. OBS#2: Off the leash - they are unpredictable and may not come when called. Had some wild roaming experiences at the off-leash beach. Always kept treats -and 95% of the timeit worked. Can you train them to counter this? or is this a stretch ?

      3. OBS#3: Not snuggly

      4. OBS#4: Only looked me in the eye when I had food- everything was a distraction.

      5. QUES#5: I know all dogs are different, but whats the best and worst scenario for getting two ??? 2 males, both puppies, fromthe same litter ? This would likely create a training nightmare I would think . Are they better with other Basenjis or not ?? what about a basenji and another type of dog ??

      6. QUES #6: Looking for a breeder that does the good fanconi test and does temperament testing on the eastcoast .. ANy recommendations ??

      Thanks,
      Viv in Northern Virginia

    • RE: Home Euthanazia

In Oct. I had to put down my 12 year old basenji Tanner. Knowing how sick he was, the lousy mental state I was in due to the thought of losing my little guy, and the fact that he hated the vet, I elected to put him down at home. Let me tell you, there is no better way to handle this. I placed my other basenji in the back room when the vet came.

I picked tanner up, held him in my arms whilee the vet gave him a sedative to relax him. then several minutes later, he gave him the fatal dose. the vet had a large blamket that he had laid on the floor and after he said he had passed, I laid him on the blanket. I gave him one last kiss goodbye and we wrapped him the blanket and the vet took him away to be cremated. Three days later I got a special delivery of my sweetie in a beautiful wooden box.

Having done this before with my last pet, I knew this was the only way to go. I have recommended it to some of my friends and they say the experience was much more consoling than carting a sick dog to the vet one last time. The "clinical-ness" of the vet is not the last memory that I want nor do i want my little furfaces to have.

      Hope this helps..
